i met him once and he seemed to listen to what we had to say and what not. though he did say my girl could get a photo with him and then walked off never to return, without taking the picture of course. |

who gives a crap about this kind of stuff anyway? i think it's silly to feel like you need to like people in order to enjoy their music.
let alone the absurdity of thinking you know anything abotu someone after meeting them only once. |

Ebb, your second paragraph I totally agree with.
but I don't think anyone said they didn't like Rich Gilbert's music/playing because they thought he is a snob. Or maybe you are just saying in general it is stupid if people do that.

Rich was extremly friendly and aproachable after the show, as was Dave P. Rich stood by the stage and talked to the same group of people for probably 20 minutes. He then signed my copy of Orange (he didn't even play on it) and DW and was very pleasant to me as well. Dave P. is very nice as well and stood around for quite some time as well to chat with the folks. Scott is extremley nice (thanks again for Regina, Scott, can't say that enough), though he didn't really socialize much. But he did help us out.

yeah, we had this argument on the forum before, but I really don't think you should "judge" someone based on bumping into them for 5 seconds once. |

Mike, you and I should thank Scott in every thread until he finally pops on, says "You're welcome, now shut the @$%^)@* up" and fades back into the internet ether. We've made a good start. :)
I found Rich quite approachable, the only one who was moreso AFTER the gig was Mr. Feldman, who even let me lend a hand in the cleanup. And of course, Scott was really friendly all the time, but a hard man to get a word in with post-show. Not as hard as McD, but...

Dave McCaffrey? He was definitely approachable when I talked to him for 20+ minutes post-show last US tour. It may have been the questions about his earlier, more obscure work, though. He even remembered Tewligans, a long-since gone venue he played here in Louisville which closed about 10 years ago.

He's just never been around after the show to talk to or anything, that's all. I haven't seen him join in the cleanup effort in any of the 5 shows I've seen.

FRANKLY THE VERY IDEA OF THIS THREAD STRIKES ME AS SOMEONE CLEARLY NOT WHAT THE BUGGERY BOLLOCKS HE'S BLATHERING ABOUT!
Apologies but as someone who flew out to Vermont for the main part to meet Tanya Donelly and Rich Gilbert, when I caught up with him, he was nothing other than perfectly charming, he listen attentively and seemed to me very considerate and interested about what he does and the impact he's had musically.
But then that could just be cos I have been a fan of his for a few years and have followed his career with some interest beyond his affiliation with Frank Black...

Hey, Tewligan's! Boy I really miss that place. Sorry to skip over to reply (alas, I have never had the chance to meet Rich et al, so I have nothing to add there), but I just had to put in a good word for the place. Who else didja you used to go see there, Chroneos? I'm feeling right old, I am....

They're known to hang about after a gig, so it's not a case of having to break in back stage to meet them.... Go to a gig and hang about after and there will be a good chance of bumping into them.

Rich was really cool with us. We followed them from gig to gig a couple of times and Rich actually came over to us after a show and said hi. Feldman was really nice too and seemed to genuinely take interest in our cheesy comments. |

you know, sometimes we in the band have shit to do...sometimes we have to take a shit, in fact...sometimes we're in a bad mood because auntie mary died...sometimes we're busy looking for our loved ones who are wandering around the venue...sometimes we're trying to find a pay phone...sometimes we're in a rush because of SOME VERY GOOD REASON...you know, sometimes we just don't have time for you frank black francis...don't take it personally...we try to say hi, sign autographs, acknowledge our patrons, but this is going on 7 days a week, all day and all night, and we just can't come through for you sometimes...trust me, if we could afford to have a big crew taking care of our every need we would have a lot more time to chat and socialize, and if we were not in the mood we would just stay in our hotel suite until showtime. but if my amp breaks one afternoon during a tour, you know who usually ends up fixing it? RICH GILBERT. he is not a snob. he is one of the nicest people i have ever known. |

Rich Gilbert once kicked my elderly blind grandmother down a flight of stairs, because she accidentally disturbed him while he was bludgeoning a litter of kittens to death with a claw hammer.

Unfortunately it was gone long before I could appreciate it. It's now a place called Cahouts which I understand doesn't live up to Tewligans at all...but they were playing the Pixies when I last went in there. ;-)
How about you? Who did you see there?

Hmm, Rodan, King Kong, Squirrel Bait, ? - I never got to see Crain when they opened for Jesus Lizard there. That would have made me puke w/excitement at that age. Hard to remember which bands I saw where. It depended on being able to get into the place (underage for most shows) on a good night - it was always easier to see shows at CD Graffit's aka the Machine. My husband, who was a good friend at the time, booked a couple of bands there (Tewligan's) in the early 90s: Agent Orange, Season to Risk (out of St. Louis)...Lessee, then there was the Zodiac, and I got to see Oblong Box at the Vogue. I had to leave for college in 91, never got to see Slint live.
I hear that, sadly, Cahout's is about all that place has going right now... I know the Mag bar used to be ok, but all they got is a jukebox (though it used to be well-stocked w/Pixies, etc.), and pool tables, which are a good thing. What do people do for live music there anymore? Even the Brycc house (which I never experienced) is gone, did I hear right?
Good to see a fellow Louisvillian who appreciates Frank Black.:)

I thought BRYCC just relocated. I believe Cahouts has the occasional show, not sure, though. There's always Phoenix Hill among the odd number of bars on Bardstown Road, don't think any have the reputation of Tewligans, though. Then of course there's Headliners, where Frank Black played last (I think he played Phoenix Hill in 2002.) Oh, yeah, and I recall Dave M. referred to Tewligans as a "shrine".
Oh, yeah, and Slint is another band I would have loved to have seen in their day. I hear Britt Walford is a schoolteacher now and Brian McMahan owns Wild and Woolly video. (Got those tidbits from a guy at Underground Sounds who doesn't believe me when I told him Walford played with the Breeders at one time)

I can just picture it...
Student: Mr. Walford, didn't you play with Slint and the Breeders? Walford: Yes, I was with Slint. I played with the Breeders as Shannon Doughton and er... Mike ... Hunt...
