I have been enjoying SMYT for the last couple of weeks and I think it's quite a magnificent album. I think all the songs are unique and are all very passionatly done. It's really difficult though to put it up with BLD and TOTY, just because those albums had such diverse songs on them. Also there are a lot of tracks on both of those albums, so that's always a bonus. Of course DITS is top shelf from the first note to the last. All in all, I'm just happy to have a new FB&C album, and exstatic that it's the third in about a year, and a pretty solid one at that!

I'm doing my FB acquisitions in chronological order and taking my time with'em (so's I can fully appreciate'em) and I'm only up to Pistolero, and while not as impressive as the first Catholics offering it nevertheless has some brilliant moments to it. Give me time people, I'll get there! (and i can't wait) |

weird...this was the only fb album i liked upon first listen. i noticed that immediately.
definitely not a "huge step" above bld, dits, and dw like many think. just his next great album.
my favorite song is massif centrale
the only song i can't get into is the snake. everyone seems to love that song, but i guess it just needs some time.
great record, in a great progression of albums from his first solo, to present!!!! |

I loved Snake right off the bat. I'm always sad when it ends at just 2 mins long. Someone had mentioned the squeaky piano bench during parts of the album and since I read that post I always listen for it. It truly does seal the album. |

I think that I share the same opinion as most others when I say I was surprised at how quickly this cd grew on me. All it took was one listen. And, I agree, Snake is way too short, but then again, so is the whole cd. Anyway, the whole thing blew me away. Not a single track that I don't love.

Really like "coastline." That one also seems to end a bit short. To be honest though, its not growing on me as a whole as quickly as the other albums did. I'm working on it though! I haven't had internet access for about a month. Go figure that's the same month "the man" himself decides to post here. *Sigh*

I love the twang direction and want less and less grungey guitar on my FB&C records, more pedal steel! ... and I'm a long time fan ... so yeah, I love the new one; it and Black Letter Days are my favorites ... I love Tom Waits too. |

I think its a fine album.Frank's style is changing from record to record, which shows his diverse talent. Nadine is a great opening track with fine guitar work. When will happiness find me again is similar to an Irish ballad, you could imagine Shane McGowan singing it. The sax solo on the snake is fantastic. Coastline is a beautiful track, if Coldplay recorded it,it would get to number one, so why not Frank? Manitoba has a real epic feel to it,kinda sounds like what Spiritualised have being releasing in the recent past. We can hopefully look forward to more great work from FB and the C's in the future.

Well...I do like it a lot. Personally, I don't enjoy it as much as previous ones. Franks songs are all so wonderful because they have the vibe that they are falling out of him as you hear them. I get the same vibe with Dylan. You can almost here the gears in his head move to produce what your hearing just as soon as you hear it. I personally don't think this new one is as good as where he was headed, however...I think there's a reason for it, and if music is any true expression, this is a great example. The songs don't have the kick to them like they've had in the past. They sound like they were written with half the "uummpfff" as usual, but if I remember correctly, didn't he just get divorced? If so, I think the whole thing reflects it, the guy is most definately bummed, and you can kind of feel the dead endedness within. It's just not as fun. I think the best on it is Nadine, which is easily the best twist on a standard blues change I've heard in ages. I think it sounds kind of spooky. Either way, the guy is brilliant and in a perfect world would be a millionare from his talents. Long story short, he still gets my money but I think DITS is the catholic creative climax thusfar. |

I can't agree more. I like all the Frank stuff, but he's made me fall in love with the pedal steel. All in all, Id have to say that Monkey gone to Heaven with only him singing and the pedal steel might very well be my favorite song of his ever. It's on the FTP site if anyone's curious. |

I've been a fan of FB since the first Pixie's record and SMYT is definitely my favorite album of Mr. Thompson's. I think he's come a long way, both as a songwriter and a vocalist (those lessons paid off!), and the band sounds tighter than ever to my ears. For me, the vocals in particular really stand out on this particular album. "Favorite Kiss" is amazing, and "Massif Centrale" is maybe the coolest song I've heard him come up with. I love how he's kind of "channeling" Iggy Pop at the end there. Don't know it that was intentional or not, but it sounds really great. A very classy way of tipping the hat to Iggy, even though he's done it before on other records. I also like how the vocals on "The Snake" start off kind of monotone, almost depressed-sounding, and then get wild and sneering after that amazing saxophone, almost like it woke him up or something. Just a great, great record ... if you're reading this, FB .. thanks very much. |

Does anyone know what's going on in "Manitoba"? The story, I mean. I know the guy's in jail at the end.
Sorry if it's been discussed to death already. Toss me a link, if so. |

Wow! I just finished listening to SMYT for the sixth time in 4 days and have come to the conclusion that it's right up there with Pistolero and Dog in the Sand as another Catholics classic. This is coming from someone who was a bit disappointed by Devil's Workshop and especially Black Letter Days and displeased in general with Mr. T's musical agenda of "embracing cliches". I'm not especially keen on the thin drum sound (just like the last two albums) and some of Rich's guitar wankery, though. 9 outta 10. |

smyt kicks some serious ass. one of my favorite fb pieces. i've been listening to it for about 3 months regularly and i loved it right away. for me that great thing about frank albums is that sometimes when i get a new frank black album it's like so so but then slowly grows on me. right now i've been listening to black letter days and absolutely love it. when it first came out it didn't do much for me. i slowly started to enjoy it but now it's the bomb. i took franks advice on all the albums- i sit back and drink a bottle of scotch and listen continously.

This is the worst album Frank Black has ever done. Saying that, its still good. This is the first album ive heard which has actually got some terrible songs.
Horrible day? Have you listened to the lyrics? Its lazy, and awful. Goodbye Lorraine is also crap.
The rest of the album is good, but its nothing on BLD or Pistolero or any of the previous albums. Its not just because i want the "punky" frank black, i thought BLD was brilliant and that was very bluesy/country. This album is dissapointing, i expected more. |

I was listening to Manitoba and a thought occurred to me. The song, but specially the chorus sounds like something the Pogues would have sung. " I have seen the face of god"..... Shane McGowan and Frank should do a duet! Ok maybe not but I think it would sound cool. |

I like "Horrible Day", but that line "I'll take off with my worries/ And I'll even let Death drive/ We're sure to get there/ Dead or alive" bugs me.
I mean, you're sure to get anywhere dead or alive, aren't you? |

If you get somewhere, you're sure to be dead or alive.
But, you aren't sure to get there? The point is that they're going to get there, even if it kills them.
Dammit, I sound like Donald Rumsfeld. |

I definitely agree with those who mention the Pogues-ness of some of the songs, especially When Will Happiness. I'd love to hear a duet with Shane on that one. Overall, I'd say the album is pretty much the best Catholics one I've heard, probably better than the solo stuff. I think the key thing is that the delivery is so sincere and genuine that it's impossible not to be drawn in. Manitoba is a stunning example, and probably the best track on the album, I was totally gutted that they didn't do it live.

Wantonly skipping through every single FB track all converted to mp3 on my computer, I realized a few things between this album and The First self titled catholic's album....
For one, it sounds probably the best out of all of them. The recording is much better, like they are stretching the boundaries each album,
Secondly, it is a very personal album. I mean, when you listen to this one it sounds like he is confiding in you. Like he's almost, you know, sitting beside you in a bar rather than performing at you.
That's just my take. I Love it. |

When I first picked up this album I gave it a spin and thought "That was just ok".....it seems like I've had this same reaction every time that I listen to a Frank Black album for the first time. Don't get me wrong there were tunes that stood out, but nothing grabbed me right off. However, having been through this in the past I knew I had to listen to it several more times. So over the next few weeks I listened to it about 10 times or so......eureka!!!!...now I get it. I don't know how Frank does it but his songs have a way of creeping up on you. Now I'll get in my car and have a song in my head off this album that I just have to hear....Mastiff Central was the first one that got me but I like them all. I've heard some people say they think songs like "Horrible Day" don't have good lyrics, and I can totally see where they are coming from. But for some reason they work for me, sometimes Frank's lyrics aren't poetic but there is something in the way he delivers them.....also the rhythm and melody of his songs are always great so sometimes if the lyrics don't do it for you then you just have to appreciate the way the song is put together and not nitpick the thing to bits. Ok, I'm getting off on a rant. Anyway, great album...it's in my top 3 Frank Black albums.

I, liked it very much the first and second time i listened to it. But, since then it's hard to me to listen again. Not because it's "heavy", no. I can listen to "surfer rosa" all day - it's just has no appeal to me. This album has the feeling of mediocry on many tracks. It's hard for me to say it cause i love frank black very much, but the emotional depth of the songs is not enough for me. It's very dissapointing considering the anticpation i had becuse frank prepared us for a very sad album, and i thought it means it shall be with deeper energies, but not so at all. Also, "manitoba" - live, sounds much much better than the bombastic exhusting song on the album. "everything is new" is the only song i will take from this album: it's a true masterpiece, with many layers and a haunting mood. All in all, i'm still waiting for frank to produce the magnificent loud, angry and yet very melodic tunes of Pistolero and FB&TC (self-titled), and also of this band starting with p..... |
