Cheers Speedy. Ive got their first album, but have not heard anything else other than the single Hash Pipe which I remember being pretty good. I'll have to grab some of their stuff when I am back in the UK. By the way, how many albums have they done?

Well I'm more of a fan of early Frank, I think TOTY is one of the best albums of all time! Love it! And I really quite like COR too, despite what people say!!! Depends what mood I'm in really, sometimes I'll go for the later bluesy-country-americana-rock type Frank, sometimes I prefer the good old indie rock not a million miles away from Trompe le Monde!
Now what I don't get is Horrible Day, I've heard a lot of people saying how great it is, but I'm not convinced!!
Listening to Massif Centrale right now, fantastic song, starts great!! But I'm a little sceptical about the chorus 'please have some wine, please don't run away' bit, it's a bit, I don't know, plain, I think. The rest of the song is *fan-freaking-tastic* it's just that chorus bit I don't get really, doesn't seem to fit as well as it should... |

I've got a good story about the album...I gave a copy to my friend a few days ago and saw him again today. His favorite band is Metallica and he's never heard Frank Black or the Pixies before. The first thing he says to me is that he loved the album. I thought he was probably just saying that because I was nice enough to give it to him. Then he said he'd listened to it about 20 times and I still thought he was exaggerating. Then he starts singing the songs and telling me which ones he really liked and he knew all the lyrics. He even knew how the guitar solos went, and he told me to burn some more Frank Black CDs and give them to him.

Mind and tell your mate to put his hand in his pocket and buy the albums if he likes them. The Catholics aren't huge megastars, they need to sell albums so that they can buy cowboy shirts. It's OK to rip off rich folks like Metallica, but FB+C work hard for our pleasure.
My 2 cents...
I was slightly disappointed when I first heard SMYT - none of the songs jumped out at me like 'San Antonio TX' or 'End of Miles' did the first time I heard them - but after a few listens I think it's one of the Catholics best.
I totally love the layered pedal steel and piano and the distorted horns on Manitoba are brilliant - specially the squonky bits at the start and the bit when the song stops then comes back in with that keening, melancholy trumpet solo. The songs really hang together and this album is quite emotional compared to earlier Catholics records.
I have to say that in Coastline, Manitoba and Everything is New, Frank is hitting new peaks as a songwriter - his slower songs have occasionally disappointed in the past (I Don't Want To Hurt You, Stupid Me), but here they are perfectly weighted, heavy with melancholy and melody.
But it still totally rocks! Love Nadine and The Snake. I'd totally love to hear Frank go nuts on some songs in the future like he does on Nadine; he never sounds better than when he's screaming dementedly.

Honestly, I just can't get into Manitoba. It's probably my least favorite song on the album. Massif Central reminds me of 'All over the world' for some strange reason, and I think it's my favorite right now. The more I hear the Snake, the more it reminds me of earlier stuff, like it could've been on the first FB&TC minus the piano and sax and with a little heavier guitar sound I think it would've fit into that album perfectly. |

Does anyone out there know what Everything is New is about? Who is Chesley etc.? Does this song have historical basis? |

I think on Everything is New Frank was kind of channeling the Bob Dylan/Lou Reed/Nick Cave style of lyrics where you tell cryptic stories about people and refer to them by name, when done well it can sound pretty poetic. To make it work you have to use kind of a unique name, Chesney, Hiram, Billy Jean, though i've heard all the above pull it off with a simple "Jenny" or "Lisa" once in awhile. Of course this is all speculation, it might be based on real people. |

I am a new to the world of Frank Black and i think that the new album was outstanding, on the first listen through i was hooked, but i thought that toward the end it lost a little of its momentum, I still like Dog in the Sand Better |

Massif Centrale still hasnīt grabbed me for some reason. I love how it starts (i keep singing 'iīm sooorry' from that REM song) but Frank doesnīt repeat that part wich is a shame. Itīs a great song but nothing spectacular. I think this is my favourite Catholics album, though. A bit more consistant than DITS, IMO.

not flamebait, but... it's not what i expected. don't get me wrong. it's better than COR, self-titled and pistolero, but it's a dull album. and his lyrics are unimaginative, and uninspired. i dearly love frank. just not right now. and not with this album.
someone please put him back in the studio and layer the damn album with more than 2 tracks. fuck. |

When i first listened to SMYT after downloading it,i was pretty much dissapointed. Then went on vacation without burning it on cd waiting to buy the original.Came back and followed Frank's instructions:i took a glass of scotch made myself comfortable on the couch and played the cd.Well it's what it was supposed to be:an album to listen to when alone and/or sad(my girlfriend is gonna need it one of these days). It's not an album to share with others like FB s/t or DITS and it's not avantguard like COR.I'm not going to listen to it night and day like TOTY.It's not the best FB album(i think people on the wave of enthusiasm overated it a lot) and it's honest but nothing more.Personally i came to this conclusion:FB is tired (maybe even sad this period) and that reflects on his music.Simple lyrics, countrish chichč sound and lo.fi. production make me think that maybe he's in lack of ideas.I apologise in advance with those who don't agree but i can't help thinking that after releasing 2 great albums last year he should have taken a pause or better he should have done the covers album(i love FB's covers specially "this is where i belong" and "changing of the guards").
It's still a good sign/by any standard |

Personally, it sounds to me like he's still on to of his game, and not "tired." People thought the same thing about BLD.
Are you still on the IRC, munchienandalusia?

im quite a fan of the album - as good as his best Catholics work (pistolero, dits)...i think its a definite improvement on BLD and DW, though that might be just because the production seems better on SMYT. i gave a copy of it to a friend who wasn't that familiar with his work, (not a Pixies fan either), said he liked it, comment was "sounds kinda like a cross between Ryan Adams and Lou Reed" |

Glad to hear you liked it, Brackish Heart.
I don't really think of it as an "improvement," over BLD or DW, tho. Those were two of my favorite albums! Especially BLD. I will always hold a special place for "End of Miles."

I'm surprised that so many people don't like Manitoba much or think that the album tails off towards the end - my three favourite songs on the album are probably The Snake, Coastline and Manitoba - Manitoba has to be one of my favourite songs ever, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, brings a tear to my eye, a lump to my throat. It even makes coyotes howl outside my back door, which is pretty impressive seeing as I live in South London.
Still I suppose everybody's got different taste - I'm sure in some other part of the internet people are discussing the merits of Savage Garden....

In case anyone was wondering how the saga of this album and my roommate went, he eventually grew to really like the album once I told him it came out of frank's separation and admitted he only sounded like a drunken irish singer on two songs. |

Leo, I'm with you. I love the closing tracks of SMYT, starting from This Old Heartache. I can't believe there are so many people who think that the end is weak. It's sweet, it's him moving on (at least Coastline), and dealing with what he's been given by the fates. Plus they're all awesome songs.
A great album overall, if there was ever any doubt.

I don't understand why people say the ending is weak...... it's a pretty consistent album, The Snake and Manitoba are two of the best songs on the album and they are at the end.....

I agree about the snake and coastline, those are 2 of my favorite 3 songs on the CD (Massif Centrale the third)...I just think Manitoba is boring. The chorus is highly forgettable and the melody is weak, in my humble opinion of course... |

Speaking about covers, just listening to the 2 covers from the Everything Is New single, fantastic! The shouting on Take What You Want is almost old Frank, and the high pitch singing on Down The Well is bizarre!! A bit scary when I first heard it!!!! |

If I have one regret is getting hold of Manitoba, Massive Centrale and Horrible Day before I got the album as Ive listened to those songs alot more than the rest. Still, I love this album.... every song is cool.

I gotta echo billgoodman. Jaina is too painful for me. Sounds like he is taking a dump or something. And Massif sounds like 3 different crappy songs pounded into eachother. Besides that, I love it, just a little less than BLD.
