I'm heading out to California to help my sister move her stuff to college and I was going to catch the shows on Friday and Saturday at McCabe's in Santa Monica. Frank will by playing two shows per night, one at 8.00 and at 10.00. Does anyone know if he'll be playing the same set at both times or on both days?

I think only Frank knows that. And even he won't know until the night of the show.

i will say, he ususally busts out LOTS of b-sides at McCabes.. because he knows that it's all the hardcore fans (who are willing to go somewhere where they don't serve alcohol and you have to sit in an uncomfortable steel folding chair all night)..

also, like most solo gigs, he is usually pretty chatty at McCabes, which is always cool.

Cool, I'll see you at both shows then. Thanks for the information.

Righteo, I figure he'll play a lot of the material off of SMYT, which is going to sound amazing acoustic/solo.

i'd love to meet some of you fellas at the show(s) .. i'm in kind of a dilemma though: both nights, believe it or not, i'm taking a "first date" girl with me. and i hate to say it, but i'm not sure i want them to know how much of an Frank Black / internet nerd i am..

like, "hey, you must be mr. grieves.. nice to meet you in person finally".. know what i mean?

anyway, i'm assuming you're talking about The Joker Mike?? the dirt-bag bar on like 24th or so??

Good call. And also, don't wear an old Pixies T-shirt and constantly refer to him as Frank, as if he was your best friend. Pretty ballsy first dates.

You'll gather some critical information on these dates. FB's tunes are your chick barometer. If the girls don't like Frank's music, you know not to bother calling them again!

Ha Ha! My girlfriend can't stand Frank Black. But its probably because I listen to nothing else, and pay out anything non-frank related.

yeah, it's not really a requirement for me that girls like Frank Black.

BLT, maybe i'll see you there.. just don't call me "Floop" if you see me :) again, trying to tone down my ultra-nerd ness.

i can't wait for the shows.. any guesses on who might be joining him?

just guessing: but i have a feeling that at least Dave Phillips will show up..

it would be cool to have another all-star catholics line up like last years show at the Knitting Factory, when Joey showed up, and Lyle..

I live nearby. Allow me to recommend some drinking establishments:

On Pico, one block west is Lares Restaurant. Good Margs in a Mexican setting.
The Joker, The R n'R and The Daily Pint are total dives.

One block east is Flint's. Kinda' upscale, but drinks are creative and strong.

Three blocks east is The Liquid Kitty, specializing in good martinis. Very cool place with great music.

Finally, across the street from McCabes is Trader Joe's, where you'll find me in the parking lot, drinking excellent beer or wine on the cheap. Get there before 9pm.

See ya' at the 10pm show!!!!

You'll probably be standing in line when my wife and I are leaving (we're going to the 8 o'clock show). I'll be the tall guy with the red-headed girl. In the real world people call me "Brian".

Yeah, I was at that Knitting Factory show. Awesome. Before the show, we were at that new shopping center at Hollywood/Highland (the neo-Egyptian thing where the Kodak Theatre is) and we saw Lyle and some of the guys walking around there.

Liquid Kitty is probably my favorite bar on the West Side. admittedly, most of the "cool" places are on the East, but Liquid Kitty is a fine establishment. i can respect any bar that's so dark you can't even see the drink menu..

as for me, i'll just bring my flask..

(actually, i'm bringing a "date" .. different one to each show.. tonight's date being more casual than tomorrow)

BLT (i mean Brian), i'll look for you..

i had a thought.. maybe to show our support for Frank and his new album, how would you guys feel about wearing face paint?

green would be cool. but maybe it should just be black.

i expect everyone on this list to have full face paint. i don't want to be the only one ok..

so, i went to both 10pm shows, Friday and Saturday..

to simplify:

Fri night: a little off
Sat night: fucking excellent.

Friday evening he seemed a bit tired or something. i wanted to wait till after last night to comment, because i was hoping he'd come back around the next night. which he did..

if i had only seen the Friday show, i might be a bit disappointed. i mean, it was great seeing him, but he just seemed a little off (in terms of the own standards that he's set giving stellar performances).. as someone who's seen tons of his shows, i can say that the Friday 10pm show was probably the (i don't want to say "worst" but..) most low-energy Frank show i've seen. he kind of wavered in and out of having energy.. but for the most part, he seemed a tad out of it.

that sounds harsh.. i still loved seeing him. and he nailed some of the songs.. but i'm confident in saying that he wasn't completely "on"..

on Saturday he was on from the first moment he took the stage, opening with Black Rider. (a song missing from the ultra-mellow Friday set). and he kept the same high energy the whole night. also, he just seemed to be singing WAY better.. friday he wasn't quite hitting his notes (i almost thought he might have lost his voice).. Saturday he was so much more alive, hitting everything PERFECTLY.. honestly, it was an almost perfect set

highlights of Friday: he played Solid Gold that someone requested. that was cool. also, hearing the new album songs solo was great. i only got it a week ago, so it's still sinking in. after seeing these two shows, it's sinking in WAY faster. i think The Snake is a pretty fucking well written song, among others.. "i just laughed when you begged and you pleaded, and now i'm cut in half cuz i'm not the one you needed".. good stuff.

Saturday he played Humboldt County Massacre, which was a hightlight for me. i think it's so great. it's also nice to hear some different pixies songs than what he was playing last year.. velouria and caribou are relatively new additions to his set. and into the white. good all.

also, "fare thee well" which he said didn't make the album because it wasn't good enough, is a FUCKING GREAT SONG.. i don't understand why he didn't put it on there. hopefully it'll turn up as a b-side.

speaking of turning up (how bout that seque?), i noticed Dave P. in the crowd on Friday. he was there with his girlfriend or wife.. kind of cool that he came to support Frank, even though he wasn't playing.

(it would have been cool if he did though)..

this is the first time i've seen a McCabes show where someone else didn't join him on stage. it's also the first entirely acoustic solo set i've seen him do. even solo, he's usually always got his electric for some songs.. but when i got there and saw the stage with just two acoustic guitars and two amps i was like, ok... i guess this really is going to be "solo acoustic".. it just goes to show how great Frank is that he can entertain for an entire set with just his acoustic guitar.

what else??

what can i say, i always love seeing him.. but Saturday was leaps and bounds better than friday.. Friday i walked away feeling just a tinge dissatisfied.. Saturday renewed my faith that Frank is basically the best ever.

seriously.

loved it all. love it.

(i wish he was playing again tonight)..

Yeah, if I heard full band versions of Velouria, Caribou, and Into The White, I would really, REALLY crap myself. But maybe him reviving those songs solo is a prelude to full band versions. Our Aussie mates probably have that to look forward to in Feb (crossing fingers). Seriously, I can just imagine hearing those opening notes from Caribou and the beat (who's got the tambourine?) and really, really losing it. And I don't lose it easily.

Good that Saturday was so great, and I guess Friday serves as a reminder that the man's still human.

I really enjoyed the Saturday 8:00 show. My wife was a bit disappointed (her take on it was similar to floop's review of the Friday show above). She mentioned that he kept looking at the clock, but I didn't notice. I thought Frank struggled a little at times to get into his "groove," but the show got stronger as it went on. As with the 10:00 show, it was just Frank, his guitar, and his blonde Fender amp.

Here's the set list as best I can remember. I'm certain he opened with Valentine and Garuda, closed with Velouria, and I'm sure of the encore, but the order of the others is approximate at best.

Valentine and Garuda
Horrible Day
Holiday Song
The Shrimp Song
Mr. Grieves
Wave of Mutilation
Robert Onion
This Old Heartache
Massif Centrale
Nimrod's Son
Headache
When Will Happiness Find Me Again
Where Is My Mind?
Cactus
Dog Gone
Goodbye Lorraine
New House of the Pope
Bullet
Nadine
My Favorite Kiss
Whiskey In Your Shoes
Manitoba
California Bound
Velouria

Encore:
Suffering
Fare Thee Well

I didn't think Friday's 10 o'clock was that bad... but I think I was just so happy to see him (it's been a while) that he could have been up there singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I would have loved it. Saturday was awesome and I was so happy to hear Into The White that I could have died. I too wish there was another show tonight. The last two nights were definitely the best since I've had since I moved to California. I couldn't have been happier.

Last night was the first I've been to McCabe's. What a cool place. No hassles, no opening band to wait through, no drunk idiots. We were in the third row, probably less than 20 feet (that's 6 metres to people who abandoned archaic measurement) from Frank. It's like seeing him in your friend's basement.

so would you say you're a fan of "into the white" intothewhite?

yeah, i know what you mean about not seeing him for a while and being happy just to see him. i've gotten to see him so much lately (mainly last year) that i guess i've gotten a little spoiled.. or at least, more critical than i might be if i only got to see him once a year or whatever..

anyway, re: mccabes: i just want to say that i was VERY DISAPPOINTED to not see anyone else wearing black face paint. it was kind of embarassing being the only one.. and even more embarassing going to a bar afterwards.. thanks guys.

My wife & I were there for the 8:00 Saturday show. The whole show was great! He played SO many Pixies songs. His new material is realy great too, especially Manitoba. BLT's list seems correct, as we jotted the setlist down after. This was one of the best shows i've ever attended. Very close & great banter from him. My 1st time seeing him live.

If you want great recordings of his live sets, go to www.hearitagain.net. It's a pay service & you download mp3's. Too bad they're not lossless and the tracking is not so great, but still very worthy of a few bucks and a burn. The beginning of the Slim's set there is acoustic solo & then with Eric Feldman on keyboards & then with the whole band. The Double Door show is also really good. And no, i do not get anything from hearitagain for promotion.

If anyone knows where i can get this mysterious Nadine EP & Everything Is New online, please drop me a hint.

Cheers!

The Saturday night show (10:00pm)was the first time that I have seen FB solo, let alone acoustic, and it was awesome! He was ON from The Black Rider to Everything Is New.

He was in a good mood and had some fun with the songs. During Into The White, he remarked that the name of the song is ITW after the repititious ITW chorus (same with New House Of The Pope). He also gave us a mini air drum solo during Where Is My Mind? which drew chuckles from the audience.

The venue was small and very intimate, seating only about 150. The last time I went to McCabe's was right before TOTY came out, and I would go there again in a heartbeat.

From what everyone has written, I feel lucky to have chosen the 10:00pm show to go to (even though I would have liked the others).

The highlights for me were: Cactus, Humboldt County Massacre and Caribou. Frank sounded great doing them.

The set list for the Saturday 10:00pm show was:

The Black Rider
The Shrimp Boat Song
Goodbye Lorraine
My Veloria
California Bound
All My Ghosts
Nadine
Cactus(!!!)
Horrible Day
Robert Onion
Humboldt County Massacre(!!!)
Manitoba
The Holiday Song
This Old Heartache
Cold Heart Of Stone
Mr. Grieves
Into The White
(I Want To Live On An)Abstract Plain
Don't Clip Your Wings
My Favorite Kiss
Caribou(!!!)
Whiskey In Your Shoes
The Swimmer
Wave of Mutilation
Fare Thee Well

Encore:
Where Is My Mind?
New House Of The Pope
Six Sixty-Six
Everything Is New

29 songs--8 Pixies--all of them great. If you have a chance to see him solo and "stripped down" do it!

I cant believe that quite a few of you were at these shows. If any of you ever go on craigslist, there are a couple of "missed connections" posted from those shows. One is for a guy on a bike with a morrisey jacket and the other for an asian girl wearing buddy holly glasses, pretty funny. Its unfortunate that the LA chapter of fb.net did not or has not congregated for the mass.

i agree.. i would have happily met up and indulged in internet nerdness if i didn't make dates for the shows.. i met up with new york people when i saw Frank there last year (met Thomas, Gibbo and Zanni), which was fun. next time..

i will say, there were some CUTE girls at both shows i went to. nice to see that Frank is still a hit with the attractive ladies (then again, we are in LA where there are attractive ladies everywhere)..

if you were at the friday 10 o'clock show, i was the rude guy who got up to urinate mid-set (what can i say, i have a small bladder).. so maybe i obstructed your view..

don't think so. Friday i sat in the 3rd or 4th row on the left side. near the asile. Sat, on the right side more near the back, but in the asile seat.

both nights i wore a black western style shirt (that's right, same shirt).

yes, this is exciting information.

Ok, you were almost right in front of me on Friday. I remember the shirt. I was in the 5th row on the aisle, left side. That's funny because I actually wondered if you were "floop" because the way you and your date were chatting seemed kind of like a first date.

that's pretty funny. so, how was i doing? :) just kidding..

yeah, both nights went well.. it wouldn't be ethical of me to give details on a public forum of people i technically don't know, but, yeah, no horror stories.. one girl i've seen again this very weekend.. so there you go. as it turns out, Frank Black doesn't make for the worst dating venue. i have first hand experience.

MikeW, i checked out the missed connections on craigslist. that's pretty funny man. i wonder how many people actually get re-connected that way. what are the chances of someone actually checking missed connections the day of a missed connection?
