So now people are selling tickets to upcoming, European, sold-out shows at prices that are way over the listed price of admission (just search e-bay). What are peoples opinions regarding this? Is it ok to have a cash grab wherein it's ok to sell tickets for whatever price you can get for them? Did the sellers ever intend to go to the show or did they buy tickets simply to resell them and make money? OR, is it unethical to sell them for more than face value? Comments on the greatness/evilness of capitalism are expected.....

i don't think ethics have much to do with it..

if you don't want to pay their price, you don't have to buy the ticket.

personally, whenever i've had an extra ticket, i sold it for face value.. but that's just because i happen to be extremely cool..

at the same time, i don't hold it against anyone for trying to make a profit. to each their own..

(to answer your question: if someone is marking up A LOT then chances are they're just a full-fledged scalper and not someone who was going to go and has extra tickets)..

Selling for face value is cool. I guess I don't really have a problem with auctioning off tickets, because the buyer has somewhat control over the price they pay (instead of the seller saying $300, hands down, which is crazy)...

back in the day me and a friend bought two tickets to see weezer on their "reunion" tour in the summer of 2000. we paid $180 for two - which i layed out for him. he decided last minute not to go and i had to scalp his ticket. face value said 12 bucks - i sold it for 30, which i feel kinda bad about it, but i paid SO much for it. i think if possible, sell for face.

first of all, paying $90 to see weezer is just crazy...

secondly, bruce springsteen & the e street band are playing fenway park this september and five minutes after the $75 tickets went on sale, ebay had tickets for $850!!! unbelievable... no wonder shows sell out so fast nowadays, some people make a living scalping tickets.

i don't understand the legalities of it all. isn't scalping prohibited by law?

when ticketmaster etc do not give refunds you have no choice but to sell the tickets on ebay. i've had to do it before because there is no other choice. with ebay people pay what they think the ticket is worth, the price is driven by demand much the same as touts. i have been in the postion of buying tickets from touts and have thought they are bastards. when i saw the queens of the stone age at the mean fiddler touts were charging £100 per ticket. i was lucky and found a nice bloke trying to get rid of his cause his mates let him down and i only paid £30.

you could always just go before the show and sell them there..

or you can do the "buy it now" option on ebay, which, if it's a good concert and you're selling at the original price, of course it will sell right away..

(just for the sake of argument)

but yeah, scalping is illegal.. as far as i know. (at least in california)

If it's a ticket you've got for a FB show, offer it to a friend who has never seen him live!
You'll make a new fan!

nay joy, got your tickets for the october gig? Got mine, so not too ersed about missing last night. Be sure and give your boyfriend the huff for a while - a true gentleman would have given his girlfriend the ticket! I wouldn't have either though.

I'm off to organise a surprise party for myself too. Wonder what the surprise will be?

On scalping tickets: I've attended a major southern university for the past 3 or so years and I've paid rent and bills solely on the money I've made by scalping tickets. Not only do I believe this is highly unethical, I also I stringently enjoy it. Ripping off all these wealthy BMW driving trust fund frat boys and sorority chicks is one of the highlights of my life. I also enjoy all the football games from where ever I choose to sit in the stadium. It's hilarious talking to these people on the phone - using childish "high, and low" tactics. NOWAY, $50 is ridiculous; I wouldn't sell my mom a ticket for $50, call me back when you want to pay $125, shoot I'll even knock it down to $115 because you've amused me so much with your silly offer.

Be good
I've got to go make some money

Check this out: I have never seen much problem in selling tickets for more than face value. There are actually tons of laws on the books that protect a person's right to do just this instead of prohibiting it (in other words, if you buy a couch for $100 and somebody likes it enough to offer you $300 for it, you should be free to sell it to them, right?).

However, there is some really shitty shit that is about to go down in the American concert industry that many of you may not know about yet, as they're trying to keep it under wraps.

Ticketmaster is in the process of rolling out an ENTIRELY NEW SYSTEM OF SELLING TICKETS.

This system is completely predicated on greed and the fact that they have what essentially amounts to a monopoly on most major venues in the USA.

They are getting ready to start selling the "best" tickets AT AUCTION ONLY, with no ceiling on prices.

While this is very similar to the notion of charging whatever the market will allow, and pretty much destoys most of the scalping business, it violates a long-held principle of concert ticket sales.

That being: WHOEVER GETS IN LINE FIRST HAS THE BEST CHANCE AT THE BEST SEATS.

Sure, there have always been shady underhanded deals where promoters block out a section of prime seats and sell them privately to their friends, or situations where big-time scalpers give kickbacks to the cashiers in exchange for them selling them more than their allotted share of the first few rows. But still, the idea has always been, if you want to get in line days early and stand around, you have a shot at incredible seats for face value.

No more.

Ticketmaster's attitude is the same one the Eagles had when they started the ball rolling down this road a few years back (they were the ones who first started charging $300 + for seats in the first few rows, with the logic being that since that's what the seats would sell for on the street, why shouldn't the fans pay it straight to them?).

However, even the silver lining of thinking that your favorite act will get a hefty cut of your giant ticket fee is probably bullshit, since Ticketmaster takes ridiculous fees as it is and have no desire to spread too much of the wealth. Hell, they even have a new program where they charge you EXTRA if you want to print the ticket out yourself, and save them the paper and the postage!

As far as I'm concerned, I'm going to avoid almost every single show that allows this, simply out of disgust wth the fact that now, the ticket company itself is "officially scalping" the consumers.

They are in effect saying, "All we want is as much money as possible, and the person without a ton of disposable cash can go fuck themselves."

From now on, it will be essentially impossible to ever legitimately buy excellent seats to major music events for anything less than way too much money.

What does everyone else think of this?

I think it sucks donkey balls! I also wish I were more surprised. It looks like we're moving into a climate where regular folk can just pretty much expect that they're going to get screwed over and financially bled at every possible turn.

On that note, Happy Friday eve!

That's some fucked up shit, peter. I like how they call it a "convenience charge." Yeah, it's really CONVENIENT that you're charging me FUCKING FIFTEEN DOLLARS MORE! It's real fucked up shit, you know...who goes to concerts? The fans. Not EVERYBODY who buys the CD will go to the concerts, only the real fans...and we're the ones constantly being fucked over for our love of music. How FUCKED UP is that? Someone should really drag these corporate cunts out onto the streets and beat them to death.

it's always fun when you go to get two $10 tickets for a show from them then the convenience charge ends up being the cost of what a third ticket would cost.

Testify! I think they should just start being honest and call the charge the "inconvenience charge" or the "monopoly charge" or something...
