eee..nevermind.
Well said Jason.
Stuart - you should ask to see the dogs before you eat them. I can guarantee you'll never eat a dog in China again.
Some pictures here:
http://www.aapn.org/xichang.html
Of course, cows, chickens and pigs go through the same thing, but i think most people have an easier time relating to the expressions on the faces of dogs. |

Oh fuck! I suspected that they were killed in a painful fashion but when you see that shit it is fucking shocking. I was chatting to someone last night who told me that before they kill the dogs they beat the shit out of them with a stick so that the adrenaline is pumping around the body when the animal is killed (it's supposed to make the meat tastier). I have to say that I have only eaten dog once or twice but never again.... shit!
You hear so many horror stories of how animals are treated here, the worst has to be in Guangdong where they eat Monkey brains. This is supposed to be highly illegal, but I know a fair few people who have tried such a 'delicacy.' What happens is this; A live Monkey is brought to a table with a hole in the middle. The table opens up so the monkeys head can fit into the hole then it closes so that the monkey cannot escape. The monkey is obviously very distressed and is screaming for its life. Then they slice the top of the monkeys head off, while its still alive and people eat the brain of the monkey as it dies. One of my students told me about this and was laughing as he explained and I have to admit I wanted to beat the fuck out of the guy. Most people acknowledge that this is nothing short of a disgrace, but still I know at least five people who have eaten brains.
People who can sit and watch that are nothing short of cold hearted fuckers that deserve the same done to themselves. I guess its even hypocritical for me to say this when I know that much of that we eat comes from an animal who has suffered a painful end. Your link has got me thinking Dave.....

That is fucked up.... how the fuck can anyone do such a thing. I am shocked that the little kid can just stand there and hold the dog as the guy is bludgeoning it to death. What heartless bastards!

Thing is, if you spent time with any other food animals, you'd ask yourself the same thing. It's only our proximity to dogs that makes this particularly shocking. Dogs are really no less amazing than pigs. Cows and chickens are pretty damn cool in their own respects..
'Course, it's hard to see this in a piece of red gunk in a cellophane wrapper. |

I understand what your saying.... but I think I'd be shocked if I saw any animal being slaughtered in such a way. I cannot ever see myself giving up eating meat but seeing how bad the animals are treated certainly plays on my mind at times. After visiting Beijing Zoo last year, on a seemingly romantic date with my girlfriend, I was almost equally shocked and have vowed never to visit a zoo again. Seeing Eagles locked up in small cages, and an Elephant being used solely for photographs with Children made me a little sick. The Elephant was chained to a post all day, with a chain no longer than half a metre.... it was a disgusting sight which I found brutally offensive as the elephant had no freedom of movement whatsoever.
It's these things that you see, and the tales that you hear that makes me think that a lot of people here have a serious lack of compassion towards animals. But then again it would be stupid to assume that this stuff is just confined to China, look at the way the Japanese slaughter whales, sharks and dolphins in the process. Look at the way chickens are battery farmed in the west etc etc.

You should see what they do to make the elephant so docile.. They literally beat the shit out of him/her for a few years when he/she's a baby.... Zoo's are evil.
Chickens, cows, pigs in the west. It's all horrific. |

We have the most cheapass zoo here. No joke we actually have a prairie dog exhibit(gopherlike creatures to the layperson). |

I live, uh, live about 20-25 minutes away from Smithfield, VA.
Smithfield is home to Smithfield Hams (http://www.smithfieldhams.com/). They're fairly well-known in the Southeast US.
Anyway, they're constantly running classifieds seeking people for positions such as "Chicken eviscerater" and whatnot. (They also process meat for Lykes hot dogs/sausages/etc.)
--
I don't know why I feel the need to qualify everything I'm typing. Maybe because I don't really have anything to say besides...well, I'm the only person i know who finds it funny..
The processing facility is located on VA Route 666 along the Pagan River.
They also pop this thing up on the side of their Admin Offcies every holiday season..

Oh, the irony.
Hey, why would a pig farm need a chicken eviscerater? |

Zoos are not inherently evil and niether is using animal products for food or clothes and stuff, it's the manner in which the animal dies that is the real evil.
I can't click on those links, that shit is too evil to look at and I find it disturbing. I can't watch a cow be tortured or an eel, yet alone a puppy.
Zoos can be good if they are like temporary homes or rescue places for species going extinct and shit... you know
Someone start bitching about circus elephants next please...
The Zoo where I live however is repulsive.

I used to love the Zoo when I was a kid, but when you really think about it, it's really nothing more than an animal prison where half of the creatures have been driven to insanity. I felt sick the last time I went to a zoo, and wouldn't ever want to go to one again.
I do think that big wildlife parks are good however, especially where they can help increase numbers of endangered species.

I dunno LBF - it's not just how an animal dies, but how s/he lives.
Zoo's are definitely foul places, forcing a creature to live in a fraction of the space they're supposed to, limited in what they can do and eat.. Constantly watched and on display.
If that's not hell, i'd hate to hear what is. I most certainly would never want to be in that type of situation.
A rehab centre is very different from a zoo. The purpose of a zoo is to make money displaying animals like property. Sad. |

I don't really think it's as black & white as that Dave, but definitely how the animal lives is as or more important than how it dies. |

Wildlife preserves are maybe what you are thinking of, Stuart, where there are no cages or cement enclosures. Very much diferent than the cages of the fimilar zoo. For instance, the territorial range of a female pride of lions may be anywhere from 8 to 154 square miles. In most zoos, lions are quite lucky if they get 1/2 a square acre. |

Id have to agree with Dave, Zoos are cruel places.... think of if you had to sit in a small restricted room all your life with people watching you....

I don't really think it's entirely fair to judge animal life based on what we have defined as a good life for ourselves. After all, I would be suicidal if all I did all day was graze on whatever I could find (or hunt whatever I could catch) and find water to drink and sleep. Much too utliitarian. But of course, animals do it and have no problems whatsoever. Maybe they like not having to always worry about where the next meal is coming from or if they are going to be a meal for someone else.
I don't know, and I'm not saying I disagree that zoos are not the nicest way for us to treat animals, but I just think that it's worth considering that we can't mold our desires/personalities/whatever onto an animal. I'm sure a lot of zoos do everything they can to be as humane and good for the animal as possible and I've known many animal lovers who work/volunteer at the zoo and are not cruel insensitive monsters, but care much more about them than most people do. And I'm sure there are lots of zoos run poorly and inhumanely. Such is life. There's always both sides. |

I see what you are saying COF, but surely there are alot of prisons do everything they can to maintain a humane environment for the inmates. Wildlife parks are the way forward, at least the animals are given a better degree of freedom, and are not confined to a small room with a glass window. After seeing Beijing Zoo I am completely against the bloody things.

Hey Dean - i'm not basing this on a human perspective, but on what the animal would have been born into, were it not a zoo.
The zoo is clearly a human creation, and is limited by human perspectives...which sorta defeats your argument. =) |

Did you hear that we lost one of our dolphins at West Ed mall recently. Now there's only 1 left. He's gonna be so lonely as they are not getting anymore. What will happen to him if he's all by himself? |

I signed a petition to have that dolphin removed from the mall. Some lady aproached me at Heritage Days and stuck the paper under my nose. I beat her sensless with my tuna sandwich, then reluctantly signed. Poor little feller.... |

Hey I went Monday too, trippy, didja go with the Deaner too? I went with the whole famille including mother in law. Last years was better, alot of exhibits pulled out because of the tickets for food idea instead of paying at each place. I had some souvlaki and some bannock. |

The tickets blow. "I'm stupid, I don't know how much money I'm spending because this is not cash, it's a little worthless ticket. Here 5 of them for one little souvlaki". You know, that sort of thinking.
No Deaner. Captain Airman had to fly home earlier that day to avoid possible bad wheather in 'toon.
Including mother in law, EH? Ouch.. |

You know you Saskatoonians just can't come up here and enjoy our festival without feeding our hungry. |

I actually flew up some other friends there and there were severe thunderstorm warnings for Saskatoon and area, so rather than risk getting caught in that, I flew those friends back home whilst Mike & some other friends stayed for the Heritage Days.
Our semi-equivalent event starts this Thursday, called FolkFest. A bunch of ethnic groups (22 I think) rent out different buildings and there's free busses between them all. Being of Greek descent, I shall be on stage dancing and/or drinking copious amounts of Ouzo.
OFF TOPIC: There is a virus/worm out there known alternatively as MSBlaster and .. um.. LuvSol or something like that. Very sneaky. Your computer will shut off out of nowhere. It affects WinXP machines. Make sure your virus defs are up to date and if you want, press Ctrl-Alt-Del. If you see msblast.exe in there, you've got the virus. Shut down our networks for a little while there... |

Well, if you had said you'd tried the pastichio or domathes or something, but telling me you had souvlaki is like me telling an Italian person I had spaghetti. Now the pita definitely helps, and if there was tzatiki and maybe some fries in there with the souvlaki, then we'd be talking... |

Carolyn, you know I love you and was only joking. Partially.
However, the fact remains that you have good taste and you can't go wrong with souvlaki. Or being a Canadian and knowing your heritage from 6 generations previous. And forgetting/intending not to list Canadian in there. |
