Got a personal motto/mantra? Perhaps it is b/c of my recent family death - but I am just thinking about the GREATER stuff I guess. If that makes any sense. Anyway, the one that I always think about is "everything happens for a reason". Cheesy? Yes. But it comforts me. Hell if I know why.
So, you gots one? |

I have a couple, they're based on quotes by fictional characters:
"The search is often more profitable than the goal. Keep that in mind when looking for something in my files." Mrs. Basic E Frankweiler (from From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler by EL Koingsburg)
and
"When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk." Tuco in Sergio Leone's The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

Mine is,
"It could always be worse"
Well, not really, but it is usually true when you're down, and that's when a person needs these mantras the most. |

well i guess the whole of flaming lips' song 'do you realize?' is a mantra, but not really depressing, more eye-opening. literally.

Some of my fav lines:
"Do more, be more."
"Be the change you want to see in the world."
"Do it with style, or don't bother doing it."
"If you're not a part of the solution, you're part of the problem."
"Eeeeeeeee eeee eeeee eeeeeeeeeeee!"
(Sorry for not including the quotee's, in a bit of a hurry..) |

Regarding the line you quote and "talking shit", I think you would be hard pressed to find a single significant cultural tradition on the planet that does not include a proverb to the effect that "evil begins when a bunch of 'good' people get together to do some 'good'". Such tendencies to "do good", and especially the tendency to do good by rounding up as many supporters as possible, are inherently fascist, and will regard opposing views as characterized by "conflict" with the given goosestepping momentum and by a lack of "substance" simply because the narrow, fascist mind will reject out-of-step opinions as unsubstantiated. You see principled opposition as simple conflict and opinions that do not buy into your "substance" as ungrounded. You would be correct to conclude that I strongly resist both the crusade and the crusader, which may be identified by arrogant inability to entertain the possibility of dramatically alternative views. Now tell me: does this sound like I don't know what I'm talking about? Believe me when I tell you that the only people who don't recognize a crusade for what it is are the crusaders themselves. |

I like blackpurse's first one:
"The search is often more profitable than the goal. Keep that in mind when looking for something in my files." Mrs. Basic E Frankweiler (from From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler by EL Koingsburg)
I think it's quite true.
but my own favourite is:
"If it ain't broke, smash it". |

There's Bart Simpson's paradox: "You're damned if you and you're damned if you don't"
My attempt at a personal philosophy is when something get screwed up to think "well, at least it'll make a good story". |

Very cool. I love reading what everyone thinks - those of you that are being serious, that is!
I also love Do You Realize. I cry everytime I hear it, it's so lovely.
Another personal motto for me is the tattoo I have on my back of three Chinese charecters - strength, trust and faith. Just to act as reminders to me of what is important. |

Have you heard the 9 minute remix of Do You Realize on the Fight Test ep? Give me the original, please....

such a simple childhood concept, and yet if people thought of this before most any action, it would prevent a good deal of pain in the world. Except for the weirdos who like weird crap done to them.... |

Well, I'm glad to finally hear that credited to Nietzsche. I totally agree with it, but it always ends up being quoted in movies like "Steel Magnolias." |

My soon to be 4 year old recently went on a lion king kick and now all I can think off is when simba says "what's a motto?" and Timon says "I don't know what's a motto with you?"

Probably true, but that's a little different from a blatently ignorant line like:
Every problem began as somebody's solution.
Which was clearly written to goad me, and not as an intelligent play on cultural proverbs.
<< Such tendencies to "do good", and especially the tendency to do good by rounding up as many supporters as possible, are inherently fascist,>>
Inherently? Often perhaps, but certainly not inherently, Captain Generalization.
<<..and will regard opposing views as characterized by "conflict" with the given goosestepping momentum and by a lack of "substance" simply because the narrow, fascist mind will reject out-of-step opinions as unsubstantiated.>>
Just who was it that pissed in your baby forumla?
<<You see principled opposition as simple conflict and opinions that do not buy into your "substance" as ungrounded.>>
Is that right?
Well, to prove you wrong, i'm telling you you're wrong.
<<You would be correct to conclude that I strongly resist both the crusade and the crusader, which may be identified by arrogant inability to entertain the possibility of dramatically alternative views.>>
Your resistance also blinds you from whatever point the alleged crusade(r) may be trying to make, and you tend to oppose for this sheer reason.
<<Now tell me: does this sound like I don't know what I'm talking about?>>
No, but i'd say you know what you think you know you're talking about. ;)
<<Believe me when I tell you that the only people who don't recognize a crusade for what it is are the crusaders themselves.>>
I think you're a little too liberal with this 'crusader' tag. It seems to be that everyone outside of your own dogma is a crusader.
But i would agree with you in general on this. |

D'oh! I forgot two important ones for myself:
"Don't fence me in" which applies to every single aspect of my life & "Follow your heart" which is so basic, it's almost obvious, but it's applicable to me. It hangs on my bathroom mirror. |

I've always stood by that one(even though I'm not a very religous person), but it can be very hard when people really try you and you relent to being selfish or not caring about sometone or something, and you feel like your being walked all over. But in the long run, it's very rewarding. Trying to walk in other people shoes is also very rewarding both literally and metaphorically?

Totally agreed. I'm trying to instill this one in my kids. Hopefully, it will stick with them, too.
I haven't heard the remix. I really like the Yoshimi version though.
