This is like a what is your favorite band question with some stipulations.
(if the band has 2 or less albums, but still you favorite, then list them)
The 3 albums or more stipulation will intice you to remember bands you used to like in the past, as well as bands you like today. (it will also show how old you are) also, it is a pretty good indicator of whether you really like the band or not.
And, OK, if you really like them, but do not have their albums for whatever reason, go ahead and list them.
I am curious to know what else you listen to.
I'll go first: not in any order of preference.
Pixies (obviously) David Bowie Beatles Radiohead Beck Pavement Fugazi John Spencer Blues Explosion Catherine Wheel Guided By Voices Yo La Tengo Chili Peppers Peter Gabriel Pink floyd Nirvana Tones on Tail / Love & Rockets Portishead Public enemy REM Cure Teh Cult Rage Against The Machine/Audio Slave Brian Eno The Mermen Blues Traveler The Tragically Hip L-7 Helmet Dead Can Dance Soundgarden Smashing Pumkins Tricky Thee Hypnotics This Mortal Coil Machine Head Janes Addiction Led Zeppelin Whiet Stripes Sublime Colourbox Throwing Muses U2 Tool/A Perfect Circle
(I know, a wide variety)
That was fun, now it is your turn

Because I'm not at home and can't look at my record collection, this list may be shorter than it should be, and I'll keep it to artists that I own 2-3 records.
Pixies Frank Black Spoon Paul Simon Beatles Chavez Guided By Voices Robert Pollard the Breeders Nirvana Sloan
Only own 1 record, but really like:
My Bloody Valentine Jim O'rourke Sonic Youth Broken Social Scene the Dears the Flaming Lips Sleater-Kinney Belle and Sebastian New Pornographers Wire Beck REM Radiohead
etc.... |

ok, I'll go next, and I have to say, I am surprised at the lack of mention of the Reverend Horton Heat, is he not one of FB's favorites. Actually, i have none of their albums so I'll shut up about that. I have to say I just recently started buying Sonic Youth, and you know what, I hear a lot of similarities between their music and Trompe LeMonde era FB.
Anyway, here I go... Frank Black Pixies Cure Level 42 Radiohead Innocence Mission

Besides Frank Black and the Pixies it is only LIZ PHAIR and DUBSTAR I have more than 3 albums from. Liz Phair's "Exile in Guyville" is very nice :-). Also Dubstar's "Disgraceful", but it is electro-pop, with a nice female singer, maybe not everyones matter of taste, but I like it.

OK, mereubu, I'm glad to see you DO have multiple Pere Ubu albums and are not merely smitten with that Alfred Jabby dude, or whatever his name was. What is the best Cars song? Call me a philistine, but for my money, it's "Just What I Needed." Heh, that reminds me of Norm McDonald doing Larry King doing News and Views. Can you picture him raising his young kids? They're sitting around, trying to watch Lion King, and Larry shows up like some weird uncle: "For my money, gang, there's no better movie than Godfather 3!" |

This is a great topic. I will throw in my two cents. 1) Here's what I think the best Cars song is: "Door to Door" from the Cars' last studio album. Yes, I know that the All Music Guide gave that album 1 star, and Mark Prindle also gave the album a low rating. However, in my opinion, "Door to Door" is really intriguing. The song revolves around an attractive chord sequence and has a good structure. Okay, enough. 2) I have a big problem with the idea that artists by which one has 3 or more albums are his/her favorite artists. Why? Well, take my case. I am one of those guys who enjoy the sound, appearance, unpopulatity, and feel of vinyl record albums. I do not like compact discs. However, I live in a small town where there are no record stores. One store sells some used records, and there IS a "record fair" in which dealers set up tables of vinyl, but a lot more can be gotten at a store that actually sells records. If I lived in Greenwich Village, I would probably have more albums by artists I would like to have albums by. Also, I have discontinued using ebay. Therefore, a lot of records that I would love to own are not in my collection. Many records that I own are records that I do not particularly care for, but I own them because they have been given to me by my family for free. Here's the list of the artists that I have 3 or more albums by: The Pink Floyd (awesome, in my opinion) The Ramones (awesome, in my opinion) Ron Carter (awesome, in my opinion. and I emphasize that "awesome") The Illusion (awesome, in my opinion) The Police (awesome, in my opinion) Chicago (don't care too much for them besides "25 or 6 to 4") The Doobie Brothers (haven't listened to their albums since 1995) Donovan (don't care too much for him) Genesis (don't like them) Electric Light Orchestra (I dislike them quite much) Now, I have heard and loved stuff by Ash, Fugazi, Radiohead, Pixies, Phish, The Residents, Atom and His Package, The Dead Milkmen, Syd Barrett, and Richard Wright, but I failed to get them on vinyl. Some stuff by these artists were never released on vinyl. I also kind of enjoy Todd Rundgren, but I have not heard too much of his stuff.

BG, you do need to get you some Ween. I've recently fallen in love with White Pepper as well as the Mollusk. Ween rule, I realize that now. And Enon are pretty great, I really enjoyed High Society. My mate at work tells me all about Mogwai, and I've tried to get into Pavement many times, but it just doesn't seem to happen. Yet I dig SM's solo work.. weird. GBV are another must have. What do you have of Bob's work? There is a MASSIVE amount of material, and I can provide you with some essentials. |
