Remember how some of the press thought it was a big deal that Joey Santiago played on Dog in the Sand? Never mind that he'd also played on the first two solo albums.
On dog in the sand it was the first time Joey played Pixie-like riffs. Robert Onion is a good example. And that felt really good. I hate it by the way when he gets tuned down. Joeys riffs should be loud. |

regarding these supposed "jam sessions"...
i agree with those who believe if there is any truth to the comment at all, these jams involved only frank, joey and dave. it's widely known that although kim became a fan favorite in the pixes heyday for her colorful rock chick public personna, she was an underacheiver in a band of accomplished musicians. by the time trompe le monde was being recorded, her contribution was minimal and the other members were seriously considering kicking her out of the band.
for those of us who still care about the pixes over a decade later (there's not as many as you would imagine)...
the expectations that have been created for these four people are completely unreasonable. this is only fueled by the british music press, who have constructed such an incredibly distorted memory of of this band, how it was, and how it should be. i agree with those who say "let it go". despite the temptation to want a pixies reunion, most of the nostalgic music revisiting that i have experienced is never as good as it once was and often just leaves me feeling older. |

Robert Onion is indeed a good example, but it is played by Dave Phillips, he is the lead guitar player. Well that's what the booklett says and the single too

once you find a band that moves you and that you love i don't think people do let go, theres always a part of you that loves that band and wants more- unless your taste in music completely changes. i think that when you really love a band it has got to do with more than just the music, its the personalities in the band and the way they interact that goes the extra mile and makes you love them rather than just like them. i agree that if the pixies did reform it might be different, they are all older and the dynamics of the band might be different. but fuck it- if i had a chance to see them i would go. if i had to fly to america i would probably do it. if they were crap i would still have their old albums, the quality of those wouldn't change. personally i really don't think they will get back together. frank seems happy doing his own thing and if he went back to the pixies i don't think he would ever truely be free of their shadow, assuming he's free of it now. He didn't play pixies songs for ages after the split because he wanted to establish his solo work, why would he go back? i don't see why kim would go back to it to be honest, the breeders must earn her enough to be comfortable and its unlikely she would want to go back to being just a bassist and backing singer when she's used to greater, if not total creative control. the best possible outcome is the pixies reunite, put out an excellent album and tour but the breeders and catholics stay together and still tour put out albums etc. i know this is very unlikely to happen but i can dream. |

anything is possible as long as it's a fantasy - we all seem to be wanting it one one hand and on the other saying: hold on, thats silly..Kim wouldn't necessarily have to play bass she's seem to taken to guitar in a crude but pleasant way and it seems true that she obviously was the under-achiever at the time but it also would be fair to say that energy and bravado made up a good portion of the sound at the time as they were all a bit young -i used to think that the weak link in thier sound was simple drumming-i've since changed that view -some playing by joey could be torn apart by accomplished players -if it really means anything to go there -i don't think it does -i'm sure they could make some very nice latvian nursery rhymes with kazoos if need be.

well of course i would see them if they toured but i doubt they ever will. they're all probably much more professional now, and maybe they would set they're difference aside for 'the fans'. but if these fans are real then why arent they happy with frank+Cs, the breeders and the martinis godamnit!!!

Anyway, it sounds like a classic Santiago riff. In fact, I don't even care if it's Joey or anybody, I just like those raw, simple riffs. |

Because to me the Pixies were the sum of those three bands. |

Erm because regardless of what your opinion is on the reforming idea, those 3 bands, as good as they are just don't come close to The Pixies. I don't like the term 'real Pixies fan' anyway, it's a load of b*******. "ooh i travelled 4000 miles to see them play in the middle of a forest fire once", "well i traded one of my kidneys for a copied tape of Frank hummming in the shower for 2 whole minutes". It's all so snobbish. Let them get back together if they want (though most of you are right in thinking they almost certainly never will) and just ignore them if you fear it will spoil your memories of them. The rest of us can go and see them live, buy any possible new releases and take the risk that we feel is worth taking. Is it possible this topic can end now....please ?
Come on people, reply to my "Pixies In Clubs" topic, i am curious to know !

well, i'm not really sure what you meant, but what i meant is that if the pixies got back together, frank would be writing stuff for the pixies, and it would be a bit like the smashing pumpkins machina, characturising themselves. if i went to see the pixies, i would really be going to see charles, joe, dave and kim, not nesseccarily the pixies. yeah, the made great music together, but i think its a little insulting to them to say they havent proggressed since, and i think they have become something more, in my opinion. that said, it is my opinion. but you're still foolish.

I think all members of the former Pixies have their feet on the earth, unlike Corrigan at the time they made Machina. Kim and Frank went back to the roots musically. I think they'd make a great album if they Pixies should reunite.

The last time I had a chance to see the Pixies, the show sold out and I've been kicking myself ever since (U2 achung baby tour). To see the fab 4 live onstage would be a dream come true. I'd be very surprised that this could actually happen, the way Kim Deal and Frank clashed, but being that he always plays several Pixies tunes in concert, its obvious he still has a soft spot for the old band. |

i'm a dj on a radio show in tampa florida. for fun we did an unscientific call-in survey on the subject of a pixies reunion. the calls came in fast. in the end, it was about 75% for a reunion - not quite as many in favor of a new album, which i thought was interesting.

lets see, a pixies reunion concert would mean that I would get to travel to a cool big city, I would get to see my favorite band perform for the first time, I would get to hear my favorite songs live, and I would get to be in a room packed with pixies fans.....sounds good to me.
if i could pick any band to see live, it would be the pixies. i can't see why people wouldn't want them to have a reunion tour. they were a great band, their music has inspired many bands and changed many peoples lives. just because they had problems in the past does not mean that they cannot jam together. the only thing better than fighting is making up!
i hope it happens |

"Jam" has many definitions, one of which is, "to take part in a jam session." The definition of "jam session" is, "an impromptu performance, esp. by jazz musicians."
So why did I use the word jam?
Because I was being grammatically correct!

Jimmy Corrigan is the main caracter in the comic novell 'Jimmy Corrigan' by Chris Ware. I always mix up those two.
What is it always with you chics thinking that we guys are getting sexual pleasure out of shit and stuff?

the reason why i think this reunion would work is because i think that both frank and kim are better musicians now. they have chops. frank black is probably better live now than he's ever been (i think). so that takes care of this idea that the pixies suck live. well, except for the other two (joey, david) i think they can catch up. the pixies are not a dated band. they are not the stones, they're not the sex pistols. they are none of those things. frank knows this. this is what works in favor of a pixies reunion. in a lot of ways, the pixies were more punk rock than most of the seminal punk bands. they just don't have it in them to sell out. i just do not see it happening. they were about rock music. nothing more, nothing less. i could see them playing with the same (or a little different) enthusiasm as they did in the late eighties. i'm all for it.

man, I would love to see the pixies live- along with the clash and maybe joy division, they are the band I most wish I had seen in their glory.
I went to see Joe Strummer live a couple of years ago, and Frank Black was one of my first "proper" gigs back in '96(?). Frank Black can cut it very well live, and that remains one of the best gigs I have been to. Likewise, pixies live tapes was what originally turned me onto the band in a big way- so I have to disagree with whoever said that the pixies were no good live.
But I would hope if the pixies were to tour again that they would play in reasonable sized venues, but that would probably mean I wouldn't be able to get in for all the music media trendies snapping up the tickets.
But that is a minor quibble- all four ex-pixies are still young, still playing well and, especially in FBs case, hitting a particularly rich seam of song-writing inspiration these days. I would love to see them reform for a tour. Failing that, could anyone sort me out with any pixies DVDs? :-)

That's right. I even think that the evolution of music has stood still the last decade. Nothing new or exciting. Or maybe it's just me getting old. Most of the bands seem to be badly retro or just plain cheap. I desperatly want the Pixies to reunite because I know they will be doing something new even if they actually wouldn't. (Does this make sense?) |
