I'm really interested here, because horror movies get the worst rap of any other genre. List your favorite guilty pleasures (you know, the badly made low budget ones) and also your favorite artistic (and hopefully genuinely creepy) ones.
Here are two of my favorite "creepy" horror movies: "The Shining" and "Don't Look Now"...very well made and good atmosphere.
Favorite guilty pleasure style horror movies would be "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and getting really guilty, pretty much any gorey slasher movie, Friday the 13th part 4 being the best. |

"The Excorcist" caused me to watch with the sound down and through my fingers till I was college age.
Then opne night WAY after college it scared the shit out of me again when I saw the Spider Walk on the newer edition.
THAT IS A SCARY MOVIE.
Maybe just cuz I am catholic.
Anyway, The Shining is second. Excellent. |

Exorcist = CLASSIC
One of my favorite movies ever, let alone horror movie. My dad made me watch it w/ my 'girlfriend' when i was, like, 10 years old. He was like "You little bastids need to be initiated".... I have never been the same since. Talk about making your skin crawl.
Other horror faves:
-Evil Dead (1 & 2) -The Ring (I really dug it.) -Texas Chainsaw Massacre (stark and brutal - CLASSIC) -Spellbinder was kind of memorable for me....an 80's horror movie about a satanic cult. (Looking back I guess its not one of the best, but still pretty cool) -Crossroads (Britney Spears' movie) - the scariest horror movie I never saw. |

I was going to say the Shining too, freaks me out.
There is a movie out on video now called "Ghostship" it is not the greatest movie by far, but it has the best mass kill scene I have seen for a very long time.
If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention. |

-Night of the living dead(G.Romero).This movie founded the whole genre.Romero is a genious -Cannibal holocaust(.RDeodato).Low budget with no story whatsoever and lousy actors though it is frightening cause looks like an amateur film.20 years before the blairwitch project. -Hellraiser(C.Barker).A classic. -Blood For Dracula(P.Morissey,A.Warhol).Dracula dies of thirst looking for blood of vergins.fucking hillarious -The hills have eyes(Wes Craven).Craven before his mainstraem stuff like Scream. -Texas chainsaw massacre.Along with the night of the living dead one of the most copied films, that says it all. -Vanishing(G.Swizer).Cult -It(S.King).After this film i hate clowns. They scare me more than any Alien or other monster.

Cmon people, get with it!
Good: The Cemetery Man- an unconventional, genre bending, funny, surreal, poignant, and brilliant "zombie" film. For fans of the Evil Dead series who are looking for a bit more subtlety.
Bad: Plan 9 From Outer Space- An Ed Wood B-masterpiece from the '50s. Groundbreaking in its cheesiness. |

i remember i was staying over at my grandmother's when i was about 4, and my two uncles who were still living there( my mother was the oldest in a family of 8 and these were the youngest) and i snuck downstairs late at night when they were watching a horror movie, one which involved homicidal dolls(no, it wasn't chuckie). i was scared for life, and screamed whenever i saw a doll with eyes that opened and closed. i remember when i was about 6 my cousins thought i was afraid of the dolls' hair so they cut the hair off one and one day tried to give it to me. i locked myself in a shed for about 2 hours hoping they would go away. and once my grandmother had a storytelling goose which was like a scary legend to me cos i ran away whenever she took it out. it talked and its eyes moved! aargh!

You should see my brother's face when i was running after him with a Santa Claus doll...It was christmas time and he insisted to watch a horror movie with me(Pet Cematary i think)but he remained so impressed that he wouldn't stay in the same room with Santa Claus...Being at the time an asshole teenager i gave him a nice childhood trauma...Actually he still hates horror movies even though this happened 15 years ago....

It was a 10 million times better read than it was to watch. This show is kinda funny but I always gotta toot Return of the Living Dead as it is a classic. It was pretty popular but I thought the Blair Witch Project was excellent. Watching supposed teenage kids get busy and then get butchered gets tired real fast. |

I generally don't like scary movies (real life is scary enough, thanks) but before I realized this I saw lots that freaked me out. 'Carrie' is a good one - Sissy Spacek is freaky and the part where she kills her mom - yikes. Also, I am a dork, but 'Scream' totally scared me - mostly I was upset because I got obsessed with "but WHY are they killing everyone?"
See, I'm way too emotional for this stuff...

Cool Bazza, I'm sold, I love horror films.
What is everyone's opinion on how old kids should be before they watch scary shows? And I guess there's a difference between movies. For example my hubby thought it was okay for my 10 year old to watch the Evil Dead. I put the kibosh on that one, but I did let him and his friends watch Pet Cemetary, so whatcha think? |

hey carolynanna - dark water is especially recommended if you liked 'ring' (not the remake but the original which is made by the same japanese guy whose name escapes me).
if you havent seen 'ring' you should definitely give that a go as well. both great films and some fantastic direction too.

I say that every kid is different and you probably have to judge the relative maturity level to decide when to start giving them more responsibilities or whatever you would call being able to watch horror movies. But then, I'm not old enough to watch them yet myself, so... :) |

I thought the Ring was okay but I did not see the original, I'm not quite into present day horror movies or at least they don't scare me as much. I like good old ghost stories better especially ones that actually leave a little to the imagination like the Blair Witch Project or OBGs like the Changling or the Shining.
I mentioned this before but I swear somebody's got to watch Ghostship to see how everyone on the ship dies at the first part of the movie, then feel free to turn it off. |

The Japanese sequal to Ring is just as good as the first one, which is really scary that they made something that lived up to the original! I heard they've made a TV series of it in Japan as well. I have to see Dark Water, only heard about it a week or two ago, Where did you see it Bazza? Bye the way has anyone seen Driller Killer, pretty weird and disturding, but like Ramona said I find alot of the news images disturbing these days, alot of it's more gorey then whats put on film and stays with you alot longer.

i actually took a Horror Film class in undergrad. among many other cool classes.. if my parents only knew what they were wasting their money on..
i like THE SHINING too, even though it gets a bad rap sometimes..
EXCORCIST is a classic of course. (as a side note, i actually went to school with William Blatty's grandson. the writer)..
i think an underrated horror film is John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.. it's a really smart film.. funny, but also pretty fucking scary too..
the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD still stands up as a work of genius. George Romero managed to scare the fuck out of people on a shoestring budget.. and throw in some subersive social commentary too..
i like ROSEMARY'S BABY.. but that's more "supernatural thriller" i guess.

Ya I saw the pianist, I liked it.
As for how old kids should be before they can watch scary movies, I got the answer. Alot older than 10. One of the kids that watched Pet Cemetary (which they all wanted to see and my hubby let them pick out) has had night terrors for a couple of weeks and had to sleep with his parents, at least thats what his mom said when she was chewing me out on the telephone. |

Oh0 com'on, you people sound pathetic. Horror movies might have scared me when I was 8. But since 13-14 I could only watch them with mild amusement.
The Exorcist scary? I watched it in the middle of the night and it was the most boring and uninvolving thing ever. Maybe you God fearing people found something scary in it.
I can't understand how people can have bad dreams about a movie they saw. The only time in my life when my own scream woke me up from my sleep was when I dreamed my dickhead fell off. THAT'S HORROR (although its was pretty funny in retrospect since in the dream I was trying to stick it back on with some spit).

i'm 22 and still get scared by horror films. i watched the exorcist when i was 18 and it scared me so much i didn't like being left on my own for about 1 month after. i really thought i had done permanent damage to myself and it took about a month to recover. i haven't watched it since. i tend to avoid horror films now because of the adverse effect they have on me. i'm ok with human killers but anything to do with ghosts gets to me. theres no need to post about what a complete pussy i am- i already know. i hope to improve with age but i won't hold my breathe. |
