Now, everybody knows about Gyros and Baklava, but the Tabouli is where it's at. Then there's these one things; they're like powdered sugar over some sort of... I dunno but it's good. I think they're Kouramiedes (sp?). And don't get me started on Diples....

I love Tabouli. But I always thought it was Lebanese, in high school I used to make this guy who sat behind me give me his tabouli that his mom made cuz he didn't like it, and he was lebanese. |

Is it lebanese? That could be. I checked it out on the net; some refer to it as a type of Greek Salad, some as a Lebanese Salad. I buy it at the Greek store by my house; I also made it once. Really easy to make.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the proper Greek-> English is either, but Kourambiedes are all sorts of tasty. There's actually another version with honey and I think there's some grape juice in them as well, very moist unlike their cousins, and quite delicious. And of course, loukoumathes are fantastic. We had them for breakfast many mornings while in Greece. Probably not the healthiest, but nothing's better. Try with cinammon for extra fun. |

Heh... I hope I passed. OK, without using Schroedinger's equations on probablistic financial forecasting, give me a use for the letter psi. :) |

While I was in Crete for a week or two last year, I had the pleasure of tasting Kalamarie(sp?)(Squid in batter) and some lovely sword fish, the Gyros was tasty but I found the meat sinuey and full of grizzle. The best thing were the pastries, gorgeous little bite size layered pastry treats smuthered in syrup(I think their Trukish influenced?), and the cheese pies were nice as well, we used to call them "Moooon Pies"! Had to have my greek salad and beautiful baked feta cheese every day, I ate Greek the whole time I was there except for a pizza or two, great food!

Your point is made, though. I met some Canadian friends (actually from Edmonton as well) in Europe and it turned out they were going to Greece a day after I was, so we met there again to tour them around. They were having problems reading the signs until I explained that everything was phonetic... they know what sounds the letters make (except for a few bastardized ones in english like 'chi', 'beta'...) and just have to sound it out. Turns out they can pronounce a lot of Greek words just fine from pronouncing the sounds that those crazy characters they used in their physics etc make. In a lot of cases, they could even translate since so many English words come from Greek.
... just so you know you're not completely out to lunch. :) |

Beta is a measure of market risk calculated by regressing the returns for an asset against the returns for the market portfolio. We don't use chi directly either but I remember that chi-square thing from stats or calculus or something. Which kind of sucked b/c the same greek letters would be used in different classes but would mean different things. Crap I hated Calculus though. |

Ah, chi-squared... I freaking hated stats. What a waste of time. |

Chi-squared is indeed from statistics. If you think having one letter mean different things in different classes is bad, try having it mean different things in the SAME class. Like you use one equation to solve for the coefficients of some waveform, and then the next equation you use has several of the same variables but with different meanings. And you want to kill the guy because his only defense is "you should understand the equation, and then the variables won't confuse you" and which makes no sense since it's impossible to understand an equation if you don't know what relationship is being stated. Luckily that class was also, in the words of my associate, "a waste of time". |

Well today I'm going non-greek, my lovely east indian neighbours loaded me up with yummy samosas (potato for all you vegans). They also did alot of that mendi, mahindi (sp?) all over my hands and then they told me that it'll last for a month, good thing it looks cool. |

I think Greek food is kinda yucky, and this is coming from a Classics major. American Greek food is okay, but authentic Greek cuisine is rather pungent for someone brought up on cheeseburgers and potatoes and strawberry quick. Their wine is horrible too.
Their culture is very rich however, and that I love. I almost think you have to live in Greece to like their authentic foods, unless you like funky tasting stuff naturally. At least you are more likely to like it if you live there.
I like their olives and cheese though. And cucumbers are good.
One time I ate some anciently prepared Greek food, like a meal Plato or Socrates would have eaten, good lord, that shit is nasty.
Bye now
