In no particular order:
1. Aliens 2. Mars Attacks 3. The Empire Strikes Back 4. Any MST3K 5. The Right Stuff (OK, it's not exactly sci-fi, but it's a great movie.)

Really, Mars Attacks? I wanted to like that one, but couldn't get into it.
I don't know if the Abyss qualifies as sci-fi, but I think it's pretty awesome. |

I recently watched the first and last (of four) Tales From A Parallel Universe/Lexx movies on the Sci-Fi channel. Pretty good, especially the first one. I'm probably not what you'd call a sci-fi movie buff, so there you go.
Lynch's Dune did not strike me as particularly good. I read somewhere that the director's cut was significantly longer and that the excessive film splicing in post-production ruined what could've been a more intelligible epic.
Mars Attacks- hilarious! |

I wouldn't really call Star Wars Sci-fi, it's just fantasy/fiction/mythology that happens to take place in space. Sci-fi generally has some emphasis on science as well. That said, IF Star Wars were Sci fi, my top 5 sci-fi movies would be those 5 (don't ask me what order, though). I suppose ESB, ROTJ, ANH, TPM, AOC |

Surprising no one mentioned Tarkowsky's 'Solaris' and 'Stalker'...
I also recommand 'La Jeté' by Chris Marker, a short 'roman-photo' that Gilliams freely adapted for '12 monkeys'. And I learned in an old interview for a french musical TV channel that it was one of Frank's favourite SF movie... For sure, it's a really good story. |

i really hate the star wars films. i know this comment isn't going to win me any friends but i really do hate them. the last one was shit. the actor they got to play anakin was possibly the worst actor i've ever seen. i don't understand it, george lucas could have hired any actor he liked but despite having all that choice he picked the one that couldn't act. the script was cheesey too. a sci fi film that i did like was donnie darko, despite not understanding it fully. i went on the website to find some answers but that was more complex than the film. the wicker man is also a really good film, but its not sci fi. |

flatliners was one of my faves in high school. i'm not sure it would fall into sci-fi though.. but i guess you could make that argument. i'd consider it more "supernatural thriller"..
12 Monkeys is one of my favorite films ever. and Mars Attacks is totally underrated. |

"eXistenZ kinda good. Matrix bad."
Amen to that.
And I'd like to point out that Ghost in the Shell is a masterpiece. (As well as the star wars saga of course)
Other great sci fi films that haven't been mentionned yet: Avalon Ghosts of Mars (ok it's more of a western but Carpenter rules) |

some speak about "dune" of Lynch. i don't like it very much. but the new version (about 5 hours - you can find it on a double DVD) is very very brillant. first it respect more the original book of Herbet, and secondly, the visual effects rules.

Ghosts of Mars is surely the worst film I have ever seen (and I have a DVD collection pushing 1500), it is the same plot as John Caprenters nearly as awful 'Vampires'.
Ask Stu about his ass-flu contracted by being the victim of a cyclops; a warning to us all.

I quite disliked Vanilla Sky. The whole 'it was a dream' thing didn't cut it as far as I was concerned, even if they did a little bit of a variation on it. |

OK, I'm a trekkie, love 'em all, TOS, TNG, all the movies. Its like I'm checking in with old friends.
12 Monkeys is on my list
let me think. I also like Total Recall, too, but I like Running Man -Arnold v. Richard Dawson in yet another bleak not so far future thing. Arnold in general is in a lot of my favotire Sci Fi movies. I'm a big fan of Predator -- at first you don't realize it's sci fi, but I also like Predator II. Gary Busey is such a wonderful motherfucker in it. I like the "ensemble" base of PRedator I and we quote lines from it a lot. "You ah on UGLY mothafucka!" --Ahnold to the predator "Bleed? I don't have time to bleed." -- the Jesse Ventura character. It's one of the few times Ahnold gets out-one-lined in his own movie.

do you like cinema? well, cinema doesn't like you!
Those 2 films are Carpenter, and thus Cinema, at his best! It's exactly like Star Wars. They're films for kids (whatever their age!) who play or used to play with fake guns in the country or during breaks at school! It's fun, It's entertainment. Once you've seen those films, you're supposed to leave with a huge smile on your face. |

A very good point, a person has to take into account things like that, which is why it's stupid to hear people complain about how the new ones aren't as good - of course they're not... you're not a kid anymore, and they don't have that classic nostalgia appeal. They're still well done, and every little cousin/sibling I have has loved the movies to death and watched them as much as me if not more. Having said that, there is also a lot more going on then just a kid's movie in ALL the Star Wars movies, though I suppose it means looking past Jar-jar's lines and whining blasters to see it. Art is as deep as you are willing to look. |

Tron - classic, the extra docutemtary stuff on the DVD shows how visually groundbreaking it was, all the pain staking computer animation and the labouriuos cell painting, and of course the brillant design by Moebius. It's one of my childhood classics along with the Last Star Fighter.
