Does anyone else constantly buy DVDs? Not only that but do research to find out about "does this movie have a good transfer?" ext, stuff like that? Because I do. I don't buy many new movies on DVD, I'm more a fan of buying an older movie because I love watching old favorites cleaned up with nice transfers in the right aspect ratio, it's as close as you can get to seeing it for the first time. Sadly, it's now coming to the point where it's hard for me to watch VHS, especially old ratty VHS--which is the only format some old obscure classics are available on.

Yup... we spent over a half hour on the phone last night trying to rent a DVD of So I Married An Axe Murderer, but there are apparently three copies in the entire city, one is wrecked, the other two rented. Sure they had it on VHS, but come on?!

We rented Death to Smoochy instead.

I can relate. In fact, I began to geek out on Laserdisc, back before DVDs became the thing.

Yeah, for some reason I can only buy true favorites of mine on DVD...I like having a flawless DVD collection. Other friends of mine have DVD collections that just consist of previously viewed new releases from Blockbuster taht are only worth watching once or twice, that doesn't bode well with me I gotta say.

I don't have a DVD player yet (*dodges shoes and tomatoes*), but when I do, I'm more inclined to buy the sets of TV series', such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, etc. I never really bought movies on VHS ever...it's kinda like "I watched it once, that's all I need" unless I absolutely love the movie. TV shows...you can sit down for 20 minutes, watch one, and you're done...and they never get old.

Buying old movies is great. You should see my War movies collection, you name it, I've got it. I buy at least 10-20 dvd's per week, new releases, old movies, foreign movies etc etc. DVD's here are less than a dollar each, they may be fake but alot of the time they are the same quality as what you'd buy in the western world.

The last time I counted, I was the proud owner of about 500 DVD's.... f*ck knows how I'm gonna get them back to Britain if I ever leave China.

see my trade post if anyone wants to trade any unreleased films (like Matrix Reloaded, X Men 2) for Frank Black gigs.

War....... Its not fantastic

i was gonna buy Das Boot today because i heard it was good, but i never saw it. Instead I got 2001: Space Oddessy and GlenGary Glen Ross.

edit: clearly i cant spell odyssey.

oh and barto, it is fucking lame how long it takes them to release those dvd sets. i hear its becuase they have to record commentary for every track. honestly, i wouldnt mind if they cancelled the show soley to devote themselves to finishing the dvds. dont get me wrong, i enjoy the new episodes a lot more than most around here, but i just NEED the classics on dvd.

Yeah, I have the first two sets...my ideal plan is to be able to get to the point where every Sunday I can watch a Simpsons DVD episode and have it go on forever. The new one is coming out soon though, a month or two.

Stuart...are these legitamite DVDs? Do you just walk into the store and buy them or is there some black market type deal?

These DVD's are as fake as they come, but they cost less than a dollar and most are as good quality as legit ones. Obviously if you buy a DVD of a film that has just come out in the cinema then you might see someone walk across the screen to go to the toilet in the middle of the film. But in general they are as good quality. The drawback is that most don't have special features options... but then again some do have.

Most restaurants in China have a DVD man, and then you get some DVD stalls.... it's all illegal over here but most of them have paid off the cops.
