Anyone playing the drums here? My favourite ones on the drums are I love your brain and Thalassocracy though the rhythm is a bit tricky on that one sometimes. As for the Pixies, Where is my mind? and Gouge away. Does anyone care about us drummers?

I fool around on them from time to time, though I think if I were a really talented drummer, which I'm not, I would probably list songs like Freedom Rock, Allison, Hate Me, Trompe Le Monde, Los Angeles (just try to watch what Scott's doing in this one), and well, there are more of course. I do love playing Gouge Away, simple but very fun! |

It's 1 a.m here in France and maybe too much nicotine gets me paranoid but are you saying I can't play the drums? I dont mean to upset. Anyway it's got nothing to do with FB so you're not bound to answer this. it's got to do with girls playing the drums. You can forget it (or not).

No, no, nothing like that... just that those are the songs I wish I could play... for now I love playing Gouge Away and songs like that which are simple enough for me. I just couldn't list those songs because I can't play them. :( But if I could, they would probably be my favourites to play. If that makes sense.
No disrespect intended... yet. <insert ominous chords> :) |

Now i've slept a while i guess i'm more receptive. I should think more before replying but it takes a long time for me to think and when i see how you people on the forum speculate about FB's words meaning it scares me a bit. :) (back to music) It's true Los Angeles is a great song to play too but once again the rhythm is sometimes weird. To me the intro to Freedom Rock is a technical show-off, I'm not interested in fifteen-minute drum rolls. I should try Trompe le monde.

Yeah, I suppose I get your point with Freedom Rock, but still a lot of fun to listen to him 'showing off' at the beginning- I think it fits the song and sounds good, so that's the main point I guess. The drums don't really get to be the forefront instrument all that often anyway, unless you listen to death metal or something. What about Allison? The drums to that one always blow me away - I love watching Dave on the video, even though you really only get to see a little of him at the end.
Have you thought about collaborating on the CD? There are some people recording Men In Black looking for someone to do drums to their version if you are capable of recording yourself and so forth. Just something to think about. |

I don't think Allison is that difficult to play. if you only listen to the music and stop thinking of Lovering's drum kit you'll be less impressed. I agree with you about the part of the drummer in a band. At least in a rock band. The drum part should only be the frame. Some might say this is an excuse for a bad drummer but they don't play the drums and it's dificult enough to be only the frame. You're the base, you can't fail. If you want to be a musician as well as a drummer then you have to play jazz (which i don't despise at all). (something else) Men in black? Only the intro and the middle part are a bit annoying but i'll think about it. (back to videos) All Pixies videos I know are pretty good. The one for Allison is very well done. My favourite ones is Here Comes Your Man. Huh i'm out of the subject again. "Harris" was on the forum a few hours ago answering a question about Manitoba being initially written for a movie. I'd like him to come and read us here.

Heh, no, not enough, just a little busy with finals and my official duties today. I still think Allison is fairly complicated drum wise, but as I said, I'm no expert. You are right about drums framing the song and the importance of this, but I think it's always important that the drums suit the music, and with this in mind, the drummer is a musician as anyone else is, just neglected sometimes. I can't fathom the MIB being "a little bit annoying" and I can only imagine Harris laughing at/mocking/throwing drumsticks at us. |

The drummer is ALWAYS neglected. The only rock drummer I know (but still I'm not a specialist in every rock drummer) who manages to make his drum parts really suit the music is Bonham. As for Harris, if you listen to his parts on Black Letter Days, they're quite basic. Which is fine, as I said before I'm not fond of technical demonstrations. A drummer needs to be powerful and to keep the beat. In that way Tommy Ramone is a good drummer. But maybe a little provocation will bring Harris around.

ERRATUM Tommy was the Ramones' first drummer, and he sucked. I meant Marky Ramone.

It's weird to write to you in english... thanks for listenning. "Private" was recorded live one year ago so by now my drumming is much less weak that it used to be at times. I haven't managed to listen to any of your MP3 so far but as soon as I get to know how to use this computer, I will. One last thing : Private is not a song of ours, it's a cover from a band named Amen. Our songs are not protected so we decided not to put them on the net.

Yeah i agree. nobody ever pays attention to the rhythmic section. the difference between drummers and bass players is when a drummer fucks up, everybody hears it. which i think is not the case for a bass player. so the drummer is always neglected and ridiculous.

I'm not a drummer (I'm a guitar player) but I always listen to what the "other" instruments have going on, particularly the drums. Mostly because I wish I could play, but also because they are an equal part of the music. Some bands I ignore the bass and drums because they are completely straight forward and uninspired. But I generally don't listen to suchs bands. |

I'd been meaning to ask if anyone else played drums on the forum since most people play guitar(you cant bring your drumkit to a party and entertain people at 3 in the morning with it) so this is a nice opportunity. Actually my Dads the real drummer in the house so I'm lucky to be able to use his kit(and it's a nice one too). I was listening to TOTY one day and half arsedly playing along to it when my Dad came in and had a go at playing to the songs. He had a go at Freedom Rock and Superabound but I think he liked Fiddle Riddle the best(he plays mostly jazz stuff and his Steely Dan). You guys never mentioned that it's Nick Vincent who plays on TOTY and I have to say that I like his stuff better then Harris's(sorry Harris!), but I really love the start of So. Bay. I'm not a good drummer really but I love being able to play something cause I'm not a real musical person(I'm sticking to drawing).
Mergzez, your right about the drums being the frame and it's always going to be the backbone of a song, but I really love drummers who can do good little flourishes without showing off or who can play complicated stuff, but do it really subtlely, a good example being John Bonham, I also love Billy Ficca's drumming on Marquee Moon, the way that drum beat picks up that song and carries it off on it's amazing journey is brillant. Thats my bit on drums(and I love Dave Loverings stuff, he made me bother to take it up in the first place)

I'm a guitarist but I dabble with drums. They are absolutely integral to a song when done well, and can completely ruin a perfectly good song if not played well, or without any punch. The drums to Freedom Rock are incredible, my foot nearly falls of tyring to play that one. As for good drumers, James Lo of the now defunt Chavez is really incredible. Very unique drummer, no standard beats for him. Nick Vincent is/was amazing, however I only know his FB work. And Scott (Harris) is really superb. I find that he always does what's called for and what the song needs, and when he does take the lead it's always excellent. You need to see him play Los Angeles live to appreciate how fast he is. Not to mention he is an incredibly nice guy who was very kind to us in Regina, considering the drive we had just made (from Saskatoon), I really can't thank him enough. And Dave Mac watches baseball on the bus before shows. You heard it here first. Damn you poperazzo!
I saw how you did that Scott. Like what's his name there... drummer of.... 15 toms.... |
