everyone should know about the part in "Gigantic: a Tale of Two Johns" (the TMBG documentary) where they show Frank Black gushing about TMBG and then they go to the two Johns getting asked about Frank Black and I guess they just kind stare at the camera. i haven't been able to see it yet, but this is how it was related to me.
yesterday I was listening to TOTY and it occurred to me that 'Freedom Rock' is quite similar to 'Backstabbing Liar' by Mono Puff. or visa versa i guess depending on the chronology.
the other aspect of this is that on TMBG radio flansy has a bit complaining about the documentary. now this could be a tongue in cheek joke but i dunno.
so basically my questions is this; do you think there really is bad blood between FB and TMBG?
i hope not because my new dream is a tour where the pixies open for TMBG. >_< |

why would Frank gush about them and always refer to them as his "friends" if there was bad blood?
having seen the documentary, i don't remember this part you speak of..

Mono Puff even coverd Oddball as a b-side on one of their singles.

I've got the DVD - don't remember anything like that!
There's a bit where FB is discussing Flans' live use of "the stick" but no nastiness I can think of...
Am I right in thinking that John Flansburgh directed the Los Angeles video, or is my memory suffering from oldness again?

I don't think that there IS a moment in Gigantic where they ask the Johns about Frank--I certainly don't recall it. (Why would they ask about Frank, anyway? It's about them, not him.) FB was at the premiere too, so I assume it's all good vibes.
Now, XTC vs. Adam Ant is another matter entirely. . . |

TOTY was released in 1994. As far as I know, "Backstabbing Liar" first showed up on a Hello EP in December 1996. So presumably "Freedom Rock" came first, but I guess I don't know for sure. Incidentally, Frank also had a Hello EP, which came out before TOTY. "Freedom Rock" isn't on it, though.
I've heard no indication of bad blood between Frank and the Johns.

the moment he is referencing is during the commentary, and it has been discussed here before - i just htink they don't have any specific comment about frank at that moment - not good or bad, just nothing funny/interesting to say relating to the doc

i also think i'ts interesting that "Backstabbing Liar" is, according to John Linnell, "a song about Frank Black." but i still don't think there's bad blood.

When did Linnell say that?

I really don't think he did...especially considering Linnell had nothing whatsoever to do with "Backstabbing Liar." That song is pure Flansburgh/Mono Puff.

yeah that's a flansy song.
it was just a silly hypothesis, based on second hand information so i wasn't expecting -- or hoping -- for it to be accurate. :) |

Flansburgh also directed Los Angeles. And in 1993 there was the "They Might Be Frank" tour around Christmas time. They were all on stage together and Frank pretty much used TMBG as a back-up band. And Frank played and sang along on a number of TMBG tunes, including directing the improv portion of Spy. I've heard of this awkward moment in Gigantic before, but I have never seen it. I own the DVD and have looked for it, but to no avail. And if you look at the picture of Frank lying on the couch in the new Spin, you'll notice he's wearing a TMBG Flood shirt. And I don't think TMBG are capable of having bad blood. The only time I've ever heard them not being pleased with anything was the time when Elektra forced them to add a performance in Japan (mentioned in Gigantic). Other than that, they're the two most amiable, likable guys on the planet. At least from everything I've seen or heard from them, and the times that I've chatted with them. Granted, it's been 10 years since They Might Be Frank, but I doubt it. You never know, though. Can't completely dismiss anything. |

The original quote really does sound like something TMBG would say, in a joking matter. I don't think it's likely that Linnell would have said anything about a Mono Puff song, though. If the quote was accurate, it was probably either Flans saying it, or a different song.

i was just kidding, sorry.
i just thought it was obviously silly that that song would be "about Frank".. but, it's less funny to me now, in retrospect. (though still somewhat funny)

Well, Mono Puff's cover of "Oddball" ends with a spoken "This is for Frank Black," and I've heard a live recording of "Spy" that they did with Frank where they dedicated it to him. So I don't think the quote was that far out in left field (although it obviously wouldn't have been serious).
I actually think I remember Flans saying that "Backstabbing Liar" is about a real person. Not Frank, of course, but I don't think he ever actually said who it was. I think he's said "Counterfeit Faker" was about a relative, and there's some kind of theory (although I really have no idea how serious it actually is) that Flans has actually written a few negative songs with his cult-member brother Earl/Sky in mind.

Maybe it was a commune. I can't quite remember. I'll see if I can find any information on that.
Speaking of TMBG, if I were to do a TMBG Survivor, would anyone participate?

"Then" is great, if only for the "tambo-urine man" song.
If you want to start with a single album rather than a two cd set, the first self-titled is best. Lincoln and Flood are great too. |

Since the first album and Lincoln are both ON Then, I'd say to start with Flood or Apollo 18, and then move on to Then if you like it. On the other hand, my girlfriend started with Factory Showroom, and that's now her favorite, while a lot of other people (including me) think it's one of the weaker ones. So I don't know.
EDIT: Oh, and I'm going to go ahead and start a Survivor for TMBG's first album after I'm done reading through the General Chat forum.
