I really started listening to them around 99/00. So when did Stipe turn into a fruit loop. I always had the impression he would come out and do a show and go back stage to read a book and drink coffee. In other words, he is a very quiet person. What is this crap about comparing himself to Bjork and the face dye. I think he is a little old for that. And what does the rest of the band think? I bet Bill Berry is thinking "man I'm glad I got out when I did, this guys gone looney".
The cover of Reveal just turns he off. Up, even though I like a bunch, is kind of mopey and the cover of Reveal makes me think it is another mopey album. I don't get that, yet, with the new album. They're standing there in suits, as it should be.

I never tryed to listen closer REM...I know they are good but I guess it´s because they are allways on the radio that I get a little bored! No offense, maybe it´s just my fault because I never got some time through them. |

I don't like comparing the albums too much, the only one I don't think will get much play time in tre's house is reveal. I do like up in a strange sort of way, it's weak, but a good sort of weak, like REM but pastel. I really like new adventures in hi fi too, I think those two albums should only be listened to in the month of october and only when it's raining. Green, Murmur and Document fucking rule though, there's no question about that...
I'm really biased, I've been listening to REM since I was 8 years old, and he's a loony yes but he's a fucking cool loony

That is a good way to desribe Up, Tre. Also, REM lite. I've always heard it refered to as a chill album and I like that one too.
E-bow from New Adventures is an awesome song.

E-bow is gorgeous, best to listen to on wet foggy days, indoors with the fire on and a strong black coffee.... trust me

I'll have to try that. I must say I always thought REM was the band all the intellectuals listened to. Of course I was only three when they arrived. I know longer have that view, but they are supposed to be one of those bands with a cause, that is bigger than rock itself. Kind of like Pearl Jam or U2, two bands I do not tolerate. It will be really disapointing if the new album sucks and/or Stipe starts dying his face or making more Bjork comparisons. If that happens, I will have to stop as of Up. It sure is fun to collect REM 7"s. I have about 20.

and just what are you implying by that mister!!!
heh heh
Well REM have always been political, if you dig deep enough you'll find it, they were involved in the whole rock the vote thing early on and the early singles are all politically minded, orange crush, radio free europe yadda yadda yadda... I've forgotten the year they started now, I think it was 1980? I hope it was, born at the same time as REM, that'd be cool

Wow, I would put Green way down on my list of favorite REM albums. But, my opinion may be tainted by history and being a bit of poser in college. REM was by far my favorite band in the late 80s and Green at the time felt like their sell out album. I should listen to it again but I don't have any fond memories of that album.
Life's Rich Pagaent is my favorite REM album perhaps because it's their most southern/country album. Way back in the day they were described/marketed as a Southern rock band. |

Greens a good album, but if I ever have to listen to "stand" again I may puke, lifes rich pagaent and fables of the reconstruction, I keep getting those mixed up, I don't think I ever listened to them as intently as the others.
[edit] World Leader Pretend and You are the everything, two bloody good reasons to listen to green again!

You are the Everything, best song on Green, no doubt. The first mandolin on a REM record?
Stand is fine too, but I can't stand it anymore. This sentence isn't pretending to be a joke.

And now they are doing the Vote for a Change tour with Pearl Jam, Bruce Springstien ect.
Green is ok, isn't that the album that "broke" them or was that document?
Their best song, I have to go with "The Apoligist" from Up. Aside from the Monster - Up albums, Pagent & Murmur are very good. I guess they would be 4 & 5 on my list.

Does anyone else think he's looking more like Yoda with the make up?
My fave albums are Green, Automatic and Pageant - although I'm even happier watching Tourfilm....

1.Life's Rich Pageant 2.Fables of the (Reconstruction) of the Fables 3.Document 4.Murmur 5.Green
Dead Letter Office and Eponymous also get some spins around my house.
I remember something about someone losing their religion back in the 90's...I learned that song and played it at a few parties, but then I started to ignore them. It was suddenly Jane's Addiction and Ministry time. E-bow was cool, Nightswimming, Everybody Hurts...but the early stuff will always be tops.
Cuyahoga, Exhuming McCarthy, I Believe, Oddfellows Local 151...and just about every other song written before 1989.
Man. Want to listen NOW.
and yeah Tre - about 1980 i think. Chronic Town came out in 81.

Anyone else listened to Around The World yet? I've been trying to like it but can't. Certainly REM's worst record ever, produced like an Icehouse album.

I don't know if a sixth and seventh is cheating, I also don't care)

REM will be touring SA for the first time next year. I hope they don't play too much from the new album.

They're playing here (Sheffield) too, the last time I saw them they were amazing, but based on the last two albums, Stipeys decline into senility and the RIDICULOUS cost of the tickets, I'm not bothering
