Monster is a great album, some bloody fantastic songs on there, Star 69, Strange currencies, I don't sleep I dream tongue and I even like whats the frequency kenneth, I don't get what other peoples problem is with it, I think lots of people got into REM around the out of time/automatic... stage so were a bit put out at this apparent change of tack not realising these two albums were a bit of a left at the traffic lights too...anyhoo waffling....

| i agree i like almost every song on monster (sick of 'bang and blame' but i liked it before it got played on the radio every 30 seconds), i think snooty people just like to hate it because of the overused gimmicky effects pedals. but i think they really work for the songs, i don't think there's anything wrong with writing songs for equipment if they're good. |

He told Carson Daly he dyes his face to try and out wierd Bjork.
I have every single R.E.M. CD and I must say my least favorite albums come after Automatic for the People. Most of Up is good, I just miss Bill Berry. R.E.M. has gotten so mopey and dark since he left. I think Reveal is a very poor aside from "Imitation of Life" and I don't have much hope for the next one either. They sound like a Generation X version of James Taylor these days.

read an interview in a Spanish newspaper where the reporter was pressing MS to talk about the new songs and he wouldn´t cause he sez he doesn´t like it when Bjork does that cause of predjudices incurred from her interpretation of her own work. Whenever people ask me what my novel is about I say it is about the world as I see it (thank you Milan Kundera).

personally m favourites are:
1) Green
2) Document
3) Monster
4) Murmur
5) Out of Time

Closer to my list, but you must add Automatic. It's a phenomenal record, but people tends to underrate it 'cause it was a huge success.
But I don't think their last records are crap. Lesser, but they have after all wonderful songs.
