my girlfriend and i are possibly going to go to London for New Years to meet up with some friends. i've always wanted to go London (still have yet to go, despite traveling nearby quite a bit).
we think it would be fun, but then we're also thinking maybe it would make more sense to go somewhere, like, tropical. in December.
i'll just be in the pubs the entire time anyway, so i guess it wouldn't matter if it was cloudy and raining.. but it would be nice to see some sunshine on a vacation. or, as you say, holiday. how's the weather in England in December?
if we do come, can someone recommend a good area to stay in in London? you know, the cool happening area or whatever.. we have no clue.
other question: who is buying me a pint if i come to England?
cheerio (for now),

I like england in december, cold is good, you get to wear good accesories like scarfs and wooly hats and snuggly jumpers. It's already autumn here really, there's a chill in the air and it's lovely

I love winter. yeah, it my not be all summery and blah blah blah, but as you said, you will be in pubs most the time, so whats the point?!
Plus, the summer isn ot much better here, so it doesnt matter when you come over.
Of you go to london, it really does depend on what youre looking for...I mean some of my favourite areas include north london, such as camden, or Notting hill is always fun.But they are my favourite because of the clubs and venues in those areas that i like.. Stay away from harrow, brixton and hackney.
And hey, if a yank is coming to london, i think that calls for all of us englanders to make an effort to meet you! I will most certainly buy you, and your girl friend a pint. And as promoter for all thigns brighton/london, I will happily welcome you to the city...buy getting you so off your face.

no, you can pick them up from the lovely londonshire villiage markets, we brits could do a snuggly jumper floop-aid for you, a collection of 'chunky-knit' sweaters and hats with bobbles on

Weather is so relative!
'F-'C subtract 32 and divide by 1.8.
We just about froze the Queen a couple of years back. The 'near freezing temperatures' that were reported were pretty moderate here for October, bloody balmy by my recollection (about 10'C approx. 50'F at the time).
Any place where they say, "It's not just the heat, it's the humidity" or "It's not just the cold, it's the wind" are living in moderate temperatures. -40 is too cold, +45 (110'F) is too hot.
I've always imagined most of Britain is like Victoria, B.C. (or Seattle) where snow is a news-worthy event, 25'C is a heat wave, and it rains. Dreary old BC.
floop, Californian, I would wear some pretty warm clothes. |

That sounds like an insult, I'd kick your canadian arse if the freezing cold temperatures here in dreary old britain hadn't reduced me to a near hibernating state of lethargy, bitch.

Camden is for tourists and Guatemalan linen merchants! Except for Bugs's tattoo parlour, but that rat bastard won't let you tell him what tattoo you want, as he fancies himself an ARTISTE! Fucker.

Spud we're trying to big up london here! And technically, floop will be a tourist, Camden is the best I can manage (we all know what I think of london) The markets are fun and there are lots of bars...
Hammerhands, I can't misunderstand you right now because the wind chill factor has frozen my head and my brain is functioning at a tenth it's normal speed and it's raining here in dreary old britain ()

IMO London is a shit hole, but worth a visit. I can't understand why everyone rushes around so much.

62 degrees, palm trees slightly swaying, a light grey mist softly chilling my bare feet.

Hey floop, my friends and I are planning a trip to London for new years. It would be cool to meet up. New Cross is the new happening place.

Careful though Monkey, you need a passport to get to South London.
Good to hear you're coming floop old boy, I'd be most happy to treat you to a pint of warm beer. Actually living in London (as opposed to everyone else who's posted here), I'd be happy to point you in some directions if you wish. Depends what sort of thing you want to do, Camden's cool as is the Shoreditch/Brick Lane area if you go in for your ironic mullets. As a tourist though, the best hotels tend to be near Russell Square and Hyde Park. There's cool pubs and stuff everywhere though. Send me an email if you want.
And Mel: 'Notting Hill is cool'? Folks, do you have any idea how much complaining she did when we wanted to go to Notting Hill for the meet?

I was just wondering where you'd gone off to, Cheesy.
Bring money to London, floop. It sucks trying to get by there on 14 pounds for a whole two weeks. The Tate Museum is fucking incredible. It deserves the f-word - I spent all my time in there, and I never got bored... they have a public watercloset and everything! |

it looks more and more like we're going to be going. so any recommendations are highly appreciated.
my friend is waiting to hear from someone he knows in London, to recommend stuff and areas.. but the more input the better.
if you can recommend a particular hotel, even better.
what we're looking for:
somewhere where they have good scones (so i can finally taste a genuine British scone and make an informed judgement)
you know.... whatever might be considered a "cool" area to be in. restaurants, bars, English stuff..

You should have tea at Simpson's on the Strand. It costs about £10, but its full on English high tea, scones and everyhting.
