aaah well, I think they only get fat after the third don't they? then people probably gt addicted due to the MSG laced pages...
I read them all (a few years ago) I think I liked the thrid one but I didn't see what all the fuss was about, I didn't think they were anything to scream and shout about, don't get me wrong I'm happy for anything to get more pople reading, I just wish it was something slightly better. And JK Rowling is nuts. I read the Pullman books and thought as kids saga's go that one was far superior

I've read the first two and after that I gave up trying to understand. I guess it's just me.

I've read the His Dark Materials trilogy. Pretty good, but I like the Harry Potter series better. Of course, I like the Oz books better than either series, so...I don't know.

Kathryn, you're not alone. I couldn't stand them either (I read the first two).
It was a chore to read them - the storyline was very good, but the writing was horrible. I think Rowling did a fair job of creating compelling character interactions and fairly exciting adventure plots, but the overall writing was very clumsy and irritating. That's what did me in, anyway. Still, they weren't written for adults, and it's not her fault that they received a critical acclaim far beyond their merit. I think a lot of the reason for the books' popularity had to do with her personal life story of overcoming adversity and making a name for herself on a whim and out of nowhere. To the press and fans it seemed almost "magical". |

the first two were all right, but the third, fourth and fifth are great. i'm not ashamed to say i thoroughly enjoy this series. granted, it took me reading "the elegant universe" to finally pick up harry potter (due to it being a far easier read).

Yeah, I know a bunch of people that liked the books, so I realize I'm in the minority. I still think she can write a good plot, I just didn't enjoy her writing style. Maybe the writing gets better as she goes along, as you said.

I'm still trudging through "Elegant Universe". One of the most exciting topics, drawn and quartered in one of the most boring ways imagineable. I wonder if it gets better after page 50... heheh |

I think the Harry Potter series definitely improves with the later books, both in terms of writing and world-building.

Apl, it's good to know I am not alone. Now, wasn't it you who liked okra as much as I do? That's two things we have in common. Those and a love of all things Frank.

Another okra fan! Welcome, welcome! I can't recall which other thread I highjacked with my praise of okra, but it's good to know that we okra fans are not too small a minority. God bless!

I tried the HP book thing to see what all the rustling was about but I have to go back and say Lord of the Rings was better. Lord of the Rings seemed so much richer and subtle. I love those books. The LOTR movies were pretty good too.
As for the magazine article, why do we care what a star of some movie likes, whether he does or does not. Here we all know and appreciate the music of Frank Black and that's good enough for me.

I'm not really sure Harry Potter and LOTR are all that comparable. Tolkien went into much more depth in creating a fantasy world. On the other hand, I think the Potter books are more fun to read. They're very different in most respects.
