Well, I've decided to teach myself French. Who knows how long it will take, as I am not self-disciplined at all; but I figure I might as well try. Anyways, I know there is a large French population on this forum, most of whom speak (or at least write) excellent English. Maybe we could set up a FrankBlack.net French Club to aid me (and anyone else interested) in my studies. This could possibly include some of our French friends posting a weekly vocabulary list, pronounciation guides, etc. And maybe we could do tests where we have to make a post in French using the vocabulary we have learned. Is anyone up to this?

just speak like you are trying to blow your nose on whomever you are speaking to, then your french will sound authentic. |

Sounds great! I know a few phrases so far (merci, s'il vous plait, bonjour, bon soir, bonne nuit, au revoir, excusez-moi) and I also know the personal pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, and several words. And I pretty much don't know any grammar.
I guess the best place to start would be French greetings, as I don't know any, except of course bonjour, etc.

I'd love to participate too. I've been studying since 7th grade, but you know how it goes- if you're not immersed in it, it's hard to become fluent. One of the radio stations here airs French radio at night- I've been listening to that. It's quite difficult to understand what they're saying.
Also, I agree- the French formum members have excellent English skills. |

To eat: manger (manjé) To drink: boire (bware) To sleep: dormir (dormir)
that's all you need to know!
To pronounce the R: like in spanish, but more with the throat than the teeth

Dormir is the same as Spanish, so that will be easy to remember.
It's going to take me a good while to learn the French verb conjugations--Christ! English must be hard to learn, as there really are no set forms for conjugating verbs.

What is the difference between the verbs tenir and avoir? Or can they be used interchangeably?

I also never heard of the bonhomme song. I remember
un, deux, trois, la politique est á moi,.. ..........., jouez, jouez musiscien....
actually don't know it anymore so well. Still remember the melody.
and of course one line in the French Anthem
"Allons enfants de la patrie, contre nous de la Tirannie!"
By the way I feel a little jalous of those bilangual countries such as Canada and Belgium. Especially when I am around Brussels, people over there can easily switch from French to Nederlands, to German and some English as well. Highly annoying when you are stottering your school-learned French sentences. Anyway.
Continuez avec le francais!

"To give up" = "renoncer".
I can speak French (obviously) but there's no way in the world I could ever teach it. I don't understand half of what LUTINS explained above. And I could never have come up with the half I understand.

A hint: French is very similar to catalan in some ways. So all you have to do is learning catalan.
