I've been quite fortunate in my current employment that a significant proportion of the rest of the office have reasonably discerning taste. Apart from the odd lapse resulting in Shed Seven, we get a fair smattering of Morrisey, Pixies, REM, Rolling Stones, which let's face it, could be a lot worse. Now, having moved offices I have some control over what goes on the stereo, so we've had Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, James Brown and Nick Drake among others. One has to be reasonably considerate. While the odd bout of cool can burst through (we've been known to have Mono, Mogwai and Sun Ra on), its only fair to let others have some say so I don't put anything too extreme. So the question goes out: what do you listen to at work?

I'm also lucky in having a very tolerant work collegue, we only have a crap radio/tape player so if the radio is on it's kerrang fm, which really is only good between 9-10 and anytime tuesdays (two-for-tuesday is great!) the only good thing about kerrang is there are no annoying brummie DJ's and no bloody UB40 or chart-vom-inducing-pop
I've started making tapes to take in though, I'm trying to educate kirsty in the way of the pixies, she's liking the bossanova pixies, the surfy style, she's not so keen on the 'thrashier' side though. She'll learn.

My co-workers' tastes don't really enter into it since I do the headphone thing. I have pretty much my entire music collection on my Creative Nomad 3. Right now, I'm listening to the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. That Todd Rundgren was something, wasn't he?

I'm usually the one who imposes his musical tastes on his office-mates. Sometimes my colleague, in a bold move, puts on one of his Ryan Adams, Arno, Flogging Molly or Rufus Wainwright CDs, but most of the times I beat him to it, cos I'm generally in first :)
My workmates are always sure to hear a fair amount of Frank Black, Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh, and Vic Chesnutt. But it all depends on my mood and pretty much anything goes, from Satie to Ramones to Robert Wyatt to Foo Fighters... etc.
These days I've been craving craving female voices, so my iTunes has been serving me a little randomized mix of Kristin Hersh (that magnificent duet with Vic Chesnutt on "Panic Pure", I could listen to that all day), Cerys Matthews, Laura Veirs, and Ani DiFranco.
Of course we also play the stuff we receive at work for reviewing, but I must admit most of it isn't very exciting (last good surprises were a guitar and cello duo, and a compilation by a local electronica label).

Everyone pretty much has the option of playing their own tunes on their computer (I have over 4 GB of music at work along), but only I and one other guy in the whole R&D dept listen to anything, so it's pretty much just our music that people hear.
What I play depends on my mood, etc. Today it's been Calexico's Hot Rail. Lately there's been a lot of the Neins and AC Newman, definitely FB/Pixies, etc. Just the usual stuff I listen to.

Joking aside, aren't you the person who defended Shed Seven against Cheeseman and I once?

In all serious...I liked Maximum High (and still play it sometimes), haven't heard any of their other albums though.

So you have snigger quietly at shine's music taste? Must be tricky.
I'm taking in SMYT tomorrow, these people need a little education. Some Violent Femmes too, some Cure, some Low. A bit of funk always goes down well, so I'm going to take 'There's A Riot Goin' On' by Sly & The Family Stone in to mess with their heads.

It really is. There was a time and a place for Britpop, for about 5 minutes in 1996.

Hey, that's other people's choice. My choices in that vein are James Brown, Curtis Mayfield and the aforementioned Sly Stone. Those are timeless and classic. And don't you be telling me you can't be English and funky. I'll come round a jive-talk ya. Then crack you in the face with a broken bottle.

Man you guys are lucky. We listen to “Heart FM” which is utter shite. Lionel Richie’s on at the moment, which is ok, but yesterday we had that new Natasha Beddingfield song 4 times! That wouldn’t be bad if that song was actually any good, but it is such a piece of utter crap….
I’m not sure my workmates would be ready for me to play anything a bit different – they’re all very straight laced English peeps.

benji, that's a tough situation. I couldn't work with crappy music playing. I use headphones so I can play what I like. Today I brought:
Br. Danielson - Brother Is To Son Guided By Voices - Best Of and a bunch of compilations that came free with a mag I'm subscribed to.

We have quite a mixed bag here - 3 of us with conflicting music tastes. Sometimes we agree though - I've converted my young snowboarder hiphop crazy colleague to The Pixies and we both love the Beastie Boys and Distillers (though I think this is simply because he has impure thoughts about Brodie Dalle) and the two of us are in constant battle with our resident Chaz and Dave/Billy Joel/Cliff Richard fan. It quite often simply boils down to who can play their music loudest. (I win - NO Billy Joel can beat the bassline from any 80's Matchbox B-line Disaster song). Something we have discovered which seems to keep almost everyone (including those who don't have any music on their machines) is a beauty of an internet radio station which plays a cunning mix of old school hip hop & seventies funk called wefunkradio |
