I was just diagnosed with bi-polar Disorder (mani-depression) today by my specialist.
Treatment begins today.
Dr. Said I would be in Dementia in 4 years if I don't get treatment.
Ah... (deep breath)
Reminds me of a book I read once, I think it was called... One flew over the something oir the other>=)
Anyone have any advice.?
I am really happy to be so sad?
Pity the f**k me.
Fudge.

I'm borderline Bipolar. I have ups and downs but they aren't as extreme as most people with Manic-Depression. What meds are you going to be taking?
Also, Bipolar I or II?

the drug is called LAMICTAL
1 in 10,000 people are allergic to it, and it takes a little while to kick in.
As far as the I or the II, I have no idea. I just got back from the office, and I am well... not taking this so well.
My face is eroding from all the tears... =)
Uh..
to be continued...

Haha, no, I'm just interested in people who are kinda like me. Oh, and some advice:
Get a notebook and write down the time each time you have a big mood swing. Some people have a kind of "schedule", if you will, for their ups and downs. It's all really weird.
This may sound weird, too, but try writing poetry and/or songs when you're in the different moods. It's amazing to see how different they are.

You should be relieved, actually, now that you know what it is. You have to know the beast to slay it. It's not like you just got it, you know. If you ever go to a therapist they will tell you to look at things in a different light. It sounds like a load of shit but it really does help.

When I was a teen I was diagnosed Bi-Polar "2"
(I forget what the "2" means.)
-
The guys also labeled me "Oppositional-Defiant" and "ADD"
-
Buncha quacks. I think it's just a little ADD.
I was acting pretty weird back then, though.
-
I still do, I guess.

Be glad that there is a much greater understanding of this disease than in the past. My father dealt with it by drinking his entire life. I have been on at least a dozen different meds over the last 10-12 years and Lamictal (a newcomer) is the first one that has really worked. My doc and I disagree on whether it is responsible for lack of concentration, though. Good luck.
Oh yeah, note that bipolar and creativity are highly correlated. Play the hand that is dealt to you as well as you can.
p.s. I'll be making fun of you again next week. |

I'm thinking of you, LBF. I agree with whoever said it's a good thing to at least know what you are dealing with, from the starting off place of knowledge, you can only get better.
There are lots of people who care about you.

I was diagnosed as ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) as a kid...I have some form of depression now, which I just recently started taking medication (Effexor) for. One side effect I've noticed so far is difficulty sleeping...I can't easily fall asleep and I wake up often at night. The weird thing is, I'm not overall restless about it or very tired. It's weird.
Best of luck to you, my fellow looney.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

LBF, my best advice is to keep taking your medicine regularly. Never skip a dose. If you get that regulated, you'll be able to figure everything else out. Good luck! |

Yes.. this is very important. Make sure you get enough sleep, exercise, and take care of your self. Make sure you understand bi polar and have a support group of friends and family that know the warning signs and can help watch out for you. Go to a theripist regularly and just know that millions of of other have this. If you are into drinking, cut back. If you are into substances, stop and if you can't on your own, get help stopping.
You can always turn a negative into a positive. Check out all these famous people that have/had bi polar. http://www.actualizations.com/bipolarpeople.htm
Appriciate all the strengths you have and that bi polar brings...be thankful you were diagnosed young before much damage was done to your brain |

Caveat - I do not know the particulars of your situation, this a very general rant about me and some of my friends.
Man, we're all nuts here anyway. I echo the positive remarks and well wishes above, but will also add that I am paranoid as hell about the grip the pharmaceutical companies have on this culture. I have known many, many people uselessly diagnosed with things like ODD, ADD, Bipolar, borderline schizophrenic, etc. when they were just depressed, stressed, or going through a period of dramatic change. I have known *very* few that really needed the medicine over the long term, although with a few more than that the medication helped get them through the rough patch. Under extraordinary circumstances, these feelings are very normal and go away on their own. I am not a doctor, but I am also not paid by the drug companies to prescribe you anything. The biggest risk is labelling yourself with one of these conditions, and redirecting your behaviors to fit that mold. Know yourself and be well.
EDIT: Preface

I trust my specialist, even if he is a Doctor. He says, as said above, w/o treatment I shall be certifiably Insane and in a state of Demntia within 4 years roughly... I'm taking the f**cking drugs...
Not to say I don't appreciate your thoughts Spudboy, because I do, and I agree whole-little-heartedly... =)
But I am afraid.
Look! People. Friends. et cetera...
I am sorry that my brain has broken...
I am more sorry than you will ever know.
Peace.

Hey LBF, that's some heavy news. It's scary to have a diagnosis laid on you. My little sister is bi-polar and for about a year was completely psychotic. Once they got her on the right meds (she was on anti-d's, which make bi-polar folks, you guessed it, psychotic) she was back to the sweet girl we knew long ago. Hope it works out well for you. Hang in there, darlin. Everybody's brain's a little broken. |

Spud boy... the one thing I agree with is that we have to stop thinking in terms of labels about everything: racial, gender and disibility lables (mental, physical and learning). It took me awhile but I stopped thinking of my self in terms of society's labels...I just see myself as me and see others as their unique selves. labels=bad
LBF, your brain isn't broken...in many ways it works way better than the average person's... you just have a chemical imballance like a diabetic. |

If you trust the guy, then take the meds. Don't lose your weird, though. Too many goddamned drones these days as it is. By the way, you have skillz too - that elk tenderloin reciepe rocked!! I added a deglaze of the meat drippins in the pan (cooked filet mignon style w/bacon) with shiraz and sauteed morels in it to use as a secondary sauce. Use your mad genius to change the world.

BLT, would you consider meds worthwhile if they prevent people from taking their own lives? (not talking about LBF's case here, but just meds in general) i've noticed quite a few anti-meds statements from you. which, i actually agree with.. i think meds are prescribed WAY too much. but i think they also work (mereubu's sister for instance)..

Again, thanks everyone... I know this isn't http://forum.frankblack.net/post.asp?method=Reply&TOPIC_ID=9097&FORUM_ID=9fb.net/doctor'sfuckingadvice
but we are all friends (for the most part)
And I feel like a f**ktard for even talking about this...
I about to cry...
Sorry
I can't finish this post right now...
I'm too sad
I'm sorry I ever started this, but I LOVE it. And hate it.
I'm sorry you have to f&^king deal with my f**cking bullshit
I hate myself enough for being a peice of sh&t but f()k it]
again
Thank you ALL
It helps to read this sh8t
peace love grow a flower lbf
p.s. (Take the Elk fat drippings and add a bit of rue to them... rue is 1 part butter, 1 part flour. Make sure you cook your rue until it doesn't taste like flour anymore. There are 3 basic rues. A blonde or brown would be great for Elk. So take you fat, rue it, add appropriate ammount of water, and simmer (little bubbles) for 45 minutes. Should make a great "Sauce" to present your Tenderloin. Good luck in the kitchen f**ckers... =))
again
thank you all for everything you have ever done...
I'm so fuhcking sorry I'm so sick =(
ok?
bye

==edit== I should probably add to the one-word answer. It's not that I want people to be committing suicide, but there are other methods of helping them than making them dependant on drugs. |

That seems overly harsh and too broad. I understand the distrust of the medical/pharmaceutical industry, but there are real circumstances where chemical treatment can improve people's lives. You might think that diagnoses have skyrocketed and that it's to make some rich, but in the past some of people that are now being treated with chemicals were locked away. I don't think we have the training or information to judge what LBF should do. |

Everyone diagnosed wants to not take the drugs, taking the drugs has a pile of stigma attached. But it can be the first step in realising there is a problem which is initially depressing beyond belief, the realisation you've gotten to such a state they're saying you have to take pills to help. It is easy to ignore and once you just accept it it leaves you feeling initially in a worse state then you thought you were in before, as I'm sure LBF can understand. It can be kicked against and belittled by others and it's horrible and when you first realise that you can't do it by yourself and you have to take those damned drugs it feels like a fucking defeat, they don't work straight away but they do over time, and sometimes they act as the kick start to sorting yourself out, the kick in the arse and motivation you need to make every day important and good just so you can stop taking these fucking drugs. I'm glad for people who don't need them, they are lucky *lucky* people. But one of the troubles with these disorders is the lack of energy and motivation to deal with the issues in the world and in your head, these drugs can balance you out, squeegee your third eye and let you see what needs to be done. It doesn't work for everyone, sometimes it goes wrong but it's better to try than to ignore the help offered you and enter that steady downhill spiral of ruining your life. The drugs are a helping hand and people should be gratefull for them, one of the most refreshing thing to hear when you are so low is to have someone say yes you are fucked up no your not being silly let me help.
