I just heard on the radio today that Spielberg is going to be doing a live actionTransformers movie, should be out for summer 2006! It's supposed to be all oldschool too, none of this beast wars crap!

On an interesting side note, the guy who does sound bites for my favorite radio station (Power 97) is also the voice of Megatron.

Live action as in 3D? I can't imagine a Transformers movie done with big-ass robot costumes.

they'll just have to actually build cars, etc, that transform into human-like robots. seriously, why aren't these on the market already?

I just hope it ain't CGI-ified. If production took the time to actually create vehicles that transformed into robots, I'd be all for this film. Anything short of that is not worthy.

I am still mad about Transformers being brought into the G.I. Joe sotryline, in the comics. It made no sense. Nothing against Transformers, but they certainly don't belong in G.I. Joe. While G.I. Joe isn't a realistic portrayal of the military and anti-terrorist organizations, it certainly doesn't go so far out there that Transformers should be popping up.

no no no no no! Literature, man. The G.I. Joe comic was incredile for about 130 issues. It really went downhill after that, though the last issue was fantastic. Larry Hama, who wrote 99.9% of the issues, is a great writer. He played a Korean soldier in episode of M*A*S*H, which I would love to see since I worshipped the man for a few years of my life but can't remember ever seeing a picture of him or hearing his voice.

CGI is a travesty. It works in very small doses, but just doesn't look quite right yet. I'd rather have something looking super corny and fake rather than something that tries so hard and gets so close to looking real, yet ends up falling short due to lighting discrepancies and movements oddities.

Uh-oh, here we go again... you anti-CGI guys should start a petition to get them to use sock puppets instead.

There was actually a study done on what you're talking about TarTar, I can't remember where I read about it, but it was done on robots and the gist was that people preferred robots that had little resemblance to humans and would find its human traits cute whereas it was seen that as the robot approaches human form the cuteness factor goes down and the closer it resembled human behaviour, the worse things got (as opposed to better). In other words, it creeped people out.

Robots like C3PO and R2D2 are like puppies. Robots on Blade Runner are disturbing. I wonder if we apply this same thinking to children... to quote Patti/Selma, "The older they get, the cuter they ain't". Now I'm going to go and shudder involuntarily.

All that said, people are so hung up on CGI and really it's just a different way of approaching art with a digital canvas instead of a erm... canvas canvas. It can be abused, but so can a lot of things.

TarTar, I totally agree with you about the "rather look cheesy fake than CGI fake." Take Yoda for example...he worked so much better in the original trilogy than the prequels.

"Cheesy fake rather than CGI fake?" Why even bother doing the movie? I am not trying to convince anyone to change their opinion. But, I don't see how they could do a Transformers movie (where 90% of the characters are big robots) without having it be fully CGI. (Unless the Transformers looked like the Zords from "Power Rangers.") If they could actually build cars that transformed into robots, that would be cool as hell. But, with all the characters involved (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Starscream, Megatron, the list goes on and on...) it could seemingly cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars (if not billions) to build all these things. I doubt Stan Winston, talented as he is, could do it. I think it would be okay if the movie was fully CGI, like "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" (sans the horrible plotline and cheesy dialogue) but I would rather it NOT be in lieu of "the Matrix" with human actors and CGI integrated together.

i'm sure it'll be a combination of live action and cgi.

i heard that Spielberg is executive producing it and no director is attached yet, but Robert Zemekis is a possibility

Spielberg did Jurasic Park, right? it'll be just like that but with Transformers instead of dionsaurs. I hope they have that cool noise when they transform.

And G.I. Joes aren't dolls, they're action figures! Yo Joe!

you probably look at more CGI than you know. it's only a travesty when it's done poorly. when it's not, you don't even notice, and that's the idea.

CGI is not only used to create robots and sci-fi creatures. your average everyday film has CGI shots in there that go entirely unnoticed..

The government has already made giant robots that transform into cars and things. They're supposed to be used in subjugating the Middle East, but they're going to let Spielberg use them for the movie.
