My favorite French artist, and one of the most popular here, is Serge Gainsbourg. Are you familiar with his work, and what do you think of it?

Btw, here is a nice link with lots of Serge's pics :

i'm a fan, but i'd have to say Jacques Dutronc is my favorite French artist (not that i'm familiar with much).

i was addicted to Comic Strip for a while there, and have a new favorite song from the record every time i listen to it. it's really happy, funny music (more funny to me since i don't understand French).

hey adnan, i heard that his song "je t'aime... moi non plus" which everyone thinks is he and Bridget Bardot is actually not he and Briget Bardot on the recording. initially they recorded it together, but she thought it was too sexy (with all the orgasm sounds and whatnot) and didn't approve it. so he recorded it with some other girl and that's who's on the record.

He is known here in Japan as the father of Charlotte Gainsbourg and husband of Jane Birkin. Some people get interested in him after watching his films like "Charlotte forever"and "Je t'aime ...moi non plus"(Jane appears) ,or after listening to his songs like "L'aquoiboniste"(Jane sings, and it was a very poplar song in Japan) .

The same holds for me. He was only the papa of Charlotte. But since I watched "Je t'aime ...moi non plus", I have been a fan of him.
This film is a unconventional "love story". It finds beauty in rubbish, dirt, ruins.
Some regard it as a only sensational and scandalous film, they are wrong, I think.
How beautiful the dance scene is! The theme song is sad and beautiful.

Hi,floop, I love this song too. Have you wathed this film?

marrigy, i haven't seen it. actually, i haven't heard of it either. i'll check it out.

yeah, Charlotte Gainsbourg is a babe. i remember hating Sean Penn in 21 GRAMS for treating her like shit (in the movie).

welcome to the forum mariggy. this forum could use more Japanese females (as could all forums)

but the Brigitte Bardot one was essentially "banned" right? the one on the album is the Jane Birkin one.

Yes, it is true that Brigitte Bardot one was "banned" at that time, but now we can enjoy it included in "Serge Gainsbourg VOL.4". BB's one is much sexier than Jane's. There is something pretty in Jane's, I feel. So, floop, you will like BB's one, let's try

Gainsbourg wrote many songs for beautiful actresses and female singers, for example, France gall, Catherine Deneuve, Isabell Adjani, Vanessa Paradis and others...he is very popular with beauteful women! They are lovely songs. Above all, "Sous Le Souleil Exactement" sang by Anna Karina is my fave.

etienne,
I am not familiar with French singers. Only about Serge and his friends, I have some knowledge. There is "the committee of Gainsbourg" in Japan. The members of it try to familiarize him to Japanese. Thanks to them, I can easily watch his films and read his books translated in Japanese. His story "Evguénie Sokolov" is very interesting.

13years has passed, since Serge died. Now in France, what do they think of him
Isn't he regarded as "a thing of the past"? He wrote a song QUI EST "IN" QUI EST "OUT". I want to know if Gainsbourg is "IN" or "OUT" now.

Serge rocks. My former employer would put him on (in the store where we worked) and pronounce his name "Ser-jay" and not understand any French, but love it anyway. He had that universal quality. Definitely ahead of his time.

To Mariggy

Serge is definitely IN for a long time. He has become a kind of reference in France. It means he is not every day in the hot news but from time to time, people qualifies him as a reference...
By the way, I now live in Japan.

Gainsbourg, the best jew France ever had...

He was great, simply...

I recently discovered the song "Strip Tease" sung in French by Nico (Yes, THE NICO) in 1965 or something.

Please listen to "Cannabis" the song... and the whole Soundtrack...

Please listen to Gainsbourg and learn to love French....

Of course by 'awesome' floop meant 'Awfull'

Comon, do you know who is France Gall?
Have you heard her sing?
Yes she was that poor stupid little girl singing les sucettes, but apart from that she is a very poor chanteuse... and sang some Berger...

I never could make myself like him, or understand the iconic status he's gained here. Even though I admit he had talent, I really think the end of his career was an outright catastrophe (France's favourite drunken buffoon, "You're Under Arrest", "Aux Enfants de la Chance", "Lemon Incest" and all that crap).

But it's only me, I know.

Have you heard about "La verve pathétique française"???

French people are actually hopeless...
Tragic... French artists in music reflect this through their songs and their end of career celebrate that fact... That's France... that's the show bizzzz...

That's hopeless

France Gall had a song called "elle est la" or something.
I remember when we were on a holiday in France that song being used in the supermarket with the text Sula Sula for some kind of candy.

I love that song

Yeah, I remember...

Well "touts les goûts sont dans la nature" as Dutronc used to sing... I think it's Dutronc...

I do not really did her, as I said... but why did I started to blame you for that?.. Sorry...

I am so wolsky sometimes...

En revanche, for those who like Gainsbourg, I advice la grande et belle tragique BRIGITTE FONTAINE and for a start the album "BRIGITTE FONTAINE EST FOLLE" (1968)...
Fantastique....

No, that's not the song

It's called Ella, elle l'a
It's twice recorded, once in 1987, and once in 1994 with Francis Cabrel

I like Serge Gainsbourg, I bought his best of album a while back. Completely nutty, some of it, but brilliant. Favourite tracks: 'Initials BB', 'Requiem Pour Un C', 'Ballad Of Melody Nelson', 'La Poinçonneur...' and yes, 'Je t'aime' is great - it has the absolute best single bass note in the world in it.

sry to hijack the thread here but is 'autour de lucie' popular in france? how are they categorized over there? i picked up on them while listening to our late great (r.i.p.) college radio station and have a few of their albums. for me, they're great to listen to and I think valerie leulliot is a babe.

thoughts? merci...and I don't speak french either except for the odd word...i just like her voice...

we'll leave carla bruni for another thread..."beautiful women" perhaps?

At that festival we played in the Pyrenees a couple weekends ago we did the Javanaise remake, skittered in and out of a couple of other songs doing it and had fun with it, the first time i sang in French.
