Especially live... Very basic song, and I find the lyrics weak, but the solo and that bridge are mindblowing.

God, it's so true. Every time I hear that song, it's a like a revelation. Like hearing it for the first time. So so so cool. I miss my Catholics....

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

To me it sounds as normal (but plenty of) distortion or maybe a lot of fuzz. no fancy fx. but I might be mistaken

and that's really a great solo. hadn't really thought about it.

My take is this, distortion with lots of compression, compression is probably part of the sound of the distortion, or it could be an amplifier that sounds that good when cranked. Then compression is nixed, or the sound is fed through a second distortion, probably before the original.

Hard to say for sure though.

Oh yah, there is what sounds like a noise gate (silencer) near the end. And the second part could be using a limiter.
