Not certain of the title, but the song on New York that goes, "There is no time... there-ere-ere is no time. This is no time for..."
Of course, with the Velvet Underground he had some great songs, too. Sweet Jane, Stephanie Says, Waiting For The Man, What Goes On, Murder Mystery, White Light/White Heat, Who Loves the Sun, Heroin, Venus in Furs. Just of few of the many awesome songs from VU.
Dean Ween, shortly before Brando died: "He's played Vito Corelone, Colonel Kurtz, and Stanley Kowalski all in one lifetime. What have you done?" |

Greatest Lou Reed song? Too hard to decide!!! They're all great!!! But my top ones would be:
"The Blue Mask" - (1982) "The Kids" - (1973) "Coney Island Baby" - (1976) "Sex With Your Parents (Motherfucker Part 1)" - (1996) "Love Makes You Feel" - (1972) "Egg Cream" - (1996) "Rock Minuet" - (2000)
I must stop now, or I'll go on forever!!! :)
p.s., "V.U." and "Another View" were posthumous mid 80's releases of Velvets' material recorded for their 4th album for M.G.M. (which never materialized). "V.U." is good. It actually sounds like an album, but "Another View" does sound like a random collection of unfinished/unpolished gems. It's a matter of personal taste, I guess.

Right now I'm really digging "Underneath the Bottle" but overall I think I'll pick "Lisa Says".

Hmmm, I love Coney Island Baby.
You could pick any song from Berlin or New York though. Two of the best albums ever. You could pick most of the songs from Transformer or Songs For Drella too. What about Street Hassle, The Blue Mask? ....... ... .. .

Pale Blue Eyes - maybe a soppy chick choice, but I love it. |

Pale Blue Eyes has a kickass guitar solo on it. One of the reasons that it kicks so much ass is that it doesn't really fit, some of the notes are sour, it's clangy and out of place in such a slow song, but that is part of the VU charm.
Do I look like a beautiful blonde with big tits and an ass that tastes like French vanilla ice cream? |

Probably because you can hear Bowie friggin' dominating the backing vocals.

The remix is vile however it has made me listen to the original a whole lot more. The scarey thing is that Lou Reed loves the remix and is welcoming the idea of more! |

I think hes been drugged.
I think since the raven, and those pictures on the album where he looks like a flasher, he has been on a slippery slope.
Ofcourse he welcomes the idea, loads of money for him. People by the remixes, then think, hmm, i might listen to the original, so they buy the original, and all fo thsi money for him doing shit all!!!
But yes, im sure hes been drugged.
Just thought I'd throw that in there... |

That's what I thought at first - he's after the royalties blah blah blah - but then remembered he takes himself very very seriously as an artist (doesn't see himself as a musician) and now am just resigning it all to senility in his old age or a late midlife crisis!
Here's the article:
Lou Reed looks set for a return to the U.K. singles chart with the July 19 release by NuLife/BMG of a pop remix of "Satellite of Love," originally produced by David Bowie and included on Reed's classic 1972 album "Transformer." The new mix, by London team Dab Hands, has been personally approved by Reed.
"Satellite of Love 2004" was well-received at the Winter Music Conference in Miami earlier this year and has been gaining club popularity since then. Reed not only gave the green light for a full commercial release of the track -- which was never a U.K. single in its original version -- but is fully involved in promoting the single.
"I've been getting all these great mixes sent to me out of the U.K. for years and years," he told Attitude magazine, "and I just started saying to the record company, 'Look, I really, really love what they are doing.' I think that my record company was a little taken aback but, genuinely, if I could make that type of music then I would. If I could master the equipment then I would love to. Maybe I will now that I've got my own studio set up."
The track will be included, alongside the original, on a new single-disc version of the 2003 compilation "Lou Reed ... NYC Man," also due July 19. It includes his best-known material as a solo artist and with the Velvet Underground.

I hope Brackish doesn't mind us digging up the bad Lou Reed songs in his thread but I'd like to mention My Love Is Chemical as one of his worst songs.

I know and he produced the album. What I meant is it's one of my favorite songs by Lou Reed, but that probably means I'm more a Bowie fan than than a Reed fan. |

That's pretty much how I feel darwin. When I went to the Bowie concert he did All the Young Dudes and I was wishing he'd do Satellite too :)
I know I said this before but Perfect Day was my wedding song. |

Haha..I agree, Lou's not at all immaculate... Since he grew that czech-hockeyplayer-haircut in the late 80s he's put out loads of crappy songs from "The Original Wrapper" to "United farmers of America"...I like some songs on "Set the twilight reeling" like "NYC man" but sad to say I think that haircut was the sign that Lou's golden days as a songwriter where over...He should have married Delilah not Laurie...

I'm really not as au fait with Lou Reed as I should be, so I'm going to say Perfect Day. Which is blindingly obvious and a boring choice, but then its a really good song, so I make no apology. Sorry.
I like VU a bit more, maybe I'd say Venus In Furs or Pale Blue Eyes.
Kind regards, Dr. Simon Specialist In Broken Hearts |

Perfect Day obvious and BORNING????
I'd think that wild side would be the obvious one. But oh well. I LOVE PERFECT DAY.
"...you're going to reap... just whaaaat you sow....."
I once sat in a field on mushrooms and cried for three hours repeating this song over and over, it was so beautiful and well, perfect.

Just to clear a few things up:
The song is "Future Farmers of America", not United Farmers of America.
I don't think you can pinpoint an artists' downfall based on their hairstyle. I think it's just that Lou is pretty much dried up. You try making prolific albums for almost 40 yrs., and see how many good ideas YOU have left.
"Transformer" was produced by David Bowie AND Mick Ronson, who was David's guitarist in the Spiders from Mars. He went on to release some very good solo albums, and was Ian Hunter's right hand man for many years until his death in 1993. Ronson was responsible for all the string and brass arrangements on the album, and also contributed many guitar tracks, including the ripping guitar part on "Viscious". He also arranged the strings on "Sea Diver" from Mott the Hoople's breakthrough album "All The Young Dudes" (also produced by Bowie).
"Perfect Day" is just that, PERFECT.
I don't really dig remixes. That shit is for the clubs. I'll take the originals anyday.
I LOVE Bowie's backing vocals on "Perfect Day". But how about "Satellite of Love"? He's just phenomenal!!! His backing vocals on "All the Young Dudes" are good too.

This is why I try to stick with primarly his work in the Velvet Underground days. Which is obviously incredible. I don't think that he's aged as well as say, Cohen, Waits, or even Mr. Thompson for that matter. Lou Reed after the VU gives me gas.
Although I should've prefaced that with I love a lot of his post VU music. Once again, I don't know...

I hav'nt heard all his stuff, but I always loved "I'm So Free"(cool Bowie backing-vocals!), it's like a song from a musical or something. "Satellite Of Love" is another fantastic song, and I have a real soft spot for a lot of "Berlin" stuff....."How Do You Think It Feels?" and "Lady Day" in particular. And "New York" has a lot of cool songs. |
