Dear Friends, I've been in a band about 6 months now, and we're having a super time writing originals & learning a few dumb covers. Our problem is the oldest one ever-the name. In every band I've ever been in, chosing the band name has always been the most agonizing process imaginable. Is it cool enough? Clever? Too clever? Arrrgghhhh, it's stupid, especially since it's the music that matters, not the name.
In the interests of our emotional well-being, I'm appealing to the most clever, most urbane, and most happening group of people that I know: the FB.net forum members. I'm pretty sure this has been done here before, but here goes...The Name My Band contest! The rules are simple. Post your suggestions. I know this is an opportunity to make up outrageously stupid & weird band names, and that's cool. I only ask that you try to balance each one with a "serious" name so that I'm getting both sides of your brain. The prize will be priceless, in the sense that it will be close to worthless. Humanitarians such as ourselves don't need petty wealth to motivate us to help others, anyhow. I'll choose my favorite at the end of the month or whenever this thread runs out of steam.
Currently, we're calling ourselves Sorry, but that's a little too tongue-in-cheek for some of the band members. We play a variety of material, most of it in a "heavy" style, almost metal. If you've heard the rockin' part of my Trompe Le Monde cover, it's kinda like that. I don't have any clips online, but I'll call you if you'd like and play stuff over the phone.
I'm sure there's been several decent names in our brainstorming sessions, but maybe we're too close to the source to know a good one when we hear it. Here's to hoping an independently created name is more palatable than the ones we've come up with. Folks, the ball's in your court. Please help!
Many thanks in advance, Bryan

Jawbreaker said they just posted a paper in their rehearsal place and everyone would jot down random ideas whenever they had them and no one knew who was picking what and that helped a lot. Also none of them admit to ever writing down Jawbreaker, which is kind of weird. I think Jawbreaker might have just been a gift from god on every level.

My left side says Chinese Minge, my right says The Modern Art.
Naming bands is harder than writing songs.

This cry for help was prompted by the insane creativity shown in the Last Men on Earth thread. Good, good stuff.

It would help if we could hear you music, know some of the titles and lyrics to your songs, and if we knew what your names were and what your personalities/stage presences are like, as well as where you live, what kind of home you live in, your families' names, your social security and bank account numbers. Otherwise the name won't really ring true.

We're still finding ourselves musically. Some stuff is devil-horns heavy, some of it melodic & epic, some of it just dumb. I like Brian Wilson-esque "floaty" vocals over groove metal riffs. We have songs about death and justice (Chronos), man's inhumanity to man (Wrecking Ball), and Weebles (Don't Fall Down). Personality-wise we're a fun-loving bunch. Our drummer's wife said we look like the Village People because of the difference in our looks. I'm clean cut, our bassist Kevin has hip facial hair and tatoos, and Rick the drummer looks like a truck driver. No commercial potential there. I'm selling my house (a New Englander built in 1869), my social security number is 6, and I don't trust the American banking establishment. Hope this helps.
Edit: Hey, I had a kitten!

Wow, built in 1869? If you don't mind me asking, is it listed? This 3-storey smilie face next door (long story) is getting way old, and we're contemplating making a move.

I, too, have a 3 story monstrosity next door full of old Greek people. Our conversations consist of one syllable words and sound effects. I'm sure it's listed, but my realtor and ex are handling most of that. I'm handling the yard work. Who would want to live in NH anyway?

A lot of bands get stuck with names that seemed cool at the time, but didn't hold up that well. Of course, if you start to think another name might be better, you can also use it for a side project, or a pseudonymous album.
I used to have a page of fake band names, but it's not up anymore, I don't think.
A few suggestions: Will Cause Riots Baconated Grapefruit This Is Not a Band The Corpse-Eaters Heavy Artillery The Third Band The Dying Rhododendrons
Whatever you go with, don't choose a name that's really similar to some other band's name. Be unique! (I apologize if any of the names I've suggested have already been used; I didn't look them up beforehand.)

Baconated Grapefruit is the best one yet. Have you tried flicking through a dictionary? It worked for Joey Santiago. I did that ages ago and came up with Nescient: its like the opposite of omniscient, i.e. knowing absolutely nothing. Maybe it was more appropriate for me...

My next band is going to be called Mike and the Whiskey Shits. If you like Beach Boys and heavy metal stuff and you have a Village People vibe going why not call yourselves the Insane Monstrousity? I think I mispelled that.

Hey Cheese, I did find a name "next door" to pixie in the dictionary; pizzle. It's a bull's penis or a whip made from one. Sounds like a hip new energy drink. "Suck down a pizzle!"
Some good names and some pants pee-ers, too. Keep`em coming! (The Nixies...*chuckle*)

Hmmm...

I always thought that a band name should in some way describe what you think your band sounds like, but in a more symbolic way...
