I realize I am not that enthusiastic about music anymore. I still enjoy listening to my records and do it all the time. But I don't really feel like discovering new artists anymore. My last attempt was Laurie Anderson (thx apl) and I liked it a lot, but it is not exactly music, it's more like art in general.
I used to spend hours at the record store, during my highschool years. Those days are over. I still read a lot, though, and my interest in other forms of art, like painting or film, has not decreased that significantly.
Has this happened to other forum members, while getting in their more mature years (I'm 24)? Is it really a problem? Is this due to my growing up, or is it that the music is just too bad these days? |

I'm afraid the standard of rock music has decreased during the last 5 years. Though I know a lot of people will disagree... My highschool years were much better music-wise (I'm 24 too). But I feel the same with cinema. How many good films have you seen since last xmas? Besides Kill Bill... One or two, no more. (Ou alors on est déjà des vieux cons, ce qui est possible après tout!)
Still some new bands are pretty good. Check Hot Fuss by The Killers (not The Kills!). Jenny was a friend of mine is the song of the year so far ! |

I don't think it's a problem. Maybe you're simply changing. Maybe you need something new, not only in your ears but also in your life. Anyway, something similar happened to me 10 or 11 years ago. I was 27 or so and I believe I was actually tired of many things - not only music - at this time. Then I simultaneously met my current girlfriend and FB's music, and guess what, happiness found me again. :)

Actually I haven't listened to the whole album yet (which seems uneven) but Jenny is a brilliant song, I stand by that. |

When you're tired of music, you're tired of life! So I guess it's time for Monsieur to commit suicide. :P
As for "new artists," do you mean "new" as in "only just recently started releasing albums," or as in "I, personally, wasn't familiar with them before"?

I've lost my passion for discovering new music. I've mainly decreased to awaiting any new FB or Pixies material. The area of the country where I live makes it too much of a pain to try to keep up with new cool music, as found in record stores (internet downloading just isn't the same). I've been buying more CD's this year than any of the previous 7 years. Although I've found I'm not as satisfied by the quality of music I've been discovering this time around as I was back in 1994-1996. I don't know what it is.

frank black saved my faith in music. i was just like you, my favourite hobby was spending hours in a record shop listening to the music press's proposals, in search of new stuff and talking for hours about the difference between dark and goth and the such. then i moved to italy and i started university and i met a girl who was my fisrt love and she didn't even know who the ramones were (seriously. she didn't even know the cure or the smashing pumpkins or green day for that matter.) i lost completely interest in music, the years between 1996 and 2001 are musically empty for me. then we broke up and "all over the world", a pixies song that i had underestimated until then, and the will to return to my previous self made me search for frank's solo stuff out of curiosity for the man who wrote the lyrics of such a beautiful song. i found out all about him and i became a fanatic. i still don't buy as much music as i did before, i am more eclectic and i dislike 90% of the new stuff but i like listening to new or old records that my friends (or this forum) find interesting . bottom line, don't worry about it seems like you suffer a severe music saturation, it will pass sooner or later.

Monsieur, you've probably discovered all the good stuff from the 60's through to the 90's which was out there to discover and now you have to rely on the current stuff to keep you interrested. Every once in a while you'll find something good to get you going again, just keep on digging.

It'll come back, man...and if it don't - no sweat. You'll never forget.
My experience is that in my mind of minds, I want to create my own music and that all other music is not mine, so therefore does not satisfy fully.
Sometimes I can't listen to anything...then I'm asking everyone I know for new stuff.
It ain't rock, but it sure is cool:

it's doesn't happen very often these days that a band will completely blow me away, but it still happens (same with cinema). i think it's worth it to wade through stuff and find those gems. not all hope is lost.

music is just different now I think.... I think once you have found all the deep prolific life changing fuck me bands out there you start looking for new music thats the same, but there is little around of it
I found it hard to appreciate throw away music at first, kings of leon/strokes/franz ferdinand/SOAD but once you apprecciate that this is just good boppy throw away music, not life changing but good to have a bop round your living room to the love of music floods back

Monsieur, not sure how much you like punk (it also covers other genres), but this magazine did much to revive our interest and faith in real music and its relevance to the world: http://www.punkplanet.com/
Great interviews and articles - not necessarily directly music-related.
We like it so much we bought the entire back catalog.
I have been through the music malaise cycle many times over, and expect it to happen again - I go through cycles of interest and disappointment and jaded apathy on a pretty regular basis. My interest was sparked again when I found www.epitonic.com and also www.insound.com -epitonic has tons of free mp3s and better yet, an incredible cross-reference resourceas well as the useful reviews/summaries. If you haven't checked it out, I recommend it highly.

The Holiday Son: decreased in the past 5 years? Try 10!
I am all too familiar with the feeling of "Oh my god...am I losing interest in music?" This happened to me about a year ago. It didn't excite me that much...Air was the band that changed that for me, and brought me back into it. Then I picked up "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye and listened to some Sly and the Family Stone. Start listening to more than just rock music...
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

I'm almost 28 and I think I like music now more than I ever did before.
I don't spend much time pursuing new music now, but that's not because I've given up on it. I just HAVE less time to spend on it. There's plenty of new music I'd probably like if I heard it. But the state of Music Writing today is awful and I can't stand to read any review websites or magazines. I mostly take pointers from musicians I like, and there's one internet mailing list poster who I trust and quietly to take recommendations from.
At 27, I'm mostly 1. digging into older music. I like old country music, I like 70s disco records, and I like finding 70s glam-rock obscurites. Those are some of the big genres for me lately. And just this year alone, I've discovered two old records that I'd probably put in my Top 10 Favorite Albums list (Fleetwood Mac's Future Games and Paul Williams' Just an Old-Fashioned Love Song). I'm also getting into Todd Rundgren.
2. I'm feeling interested in genres I never paid attention to before. I have a real hankering for trying out South American/Carribbean music lately. I haven't bought anything yet, but I'm doing some research. |

I kind of now what your talking about mon ami, but I haven't really settled into a proper malaise yet. I think the suggestions earlier to broaden your scope were a good idea - I'm sure you have a wide-ranging taste and all, but I'm sure there's plenty of things you haven't heard. Gram Parsons and Marvin Gaye have already been suggested, they're cool. I agree with Jen as well, epitonic.com is fantastic.
