Since one of our resident conservatives was agast that Edwards claimed he was speaking for a dead child, I wondered what they thought of Bush's claim. One was doing it to dramatize a case; the other is doing it to claim moral authority. Which is worse?
"I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job."
-- President Bush, quoted in the Lancaster New Era, during a private meeting with an Amish group.

I thought using religion in such a way went out with Monarchy.
I don't use my vote in the UK, but if I could in the USA, I really think I would.

Though I'm hardly on board with Bush's faith, I think you will enjoy reading the short article from which the quote was taken. In my opinion it is a mistake to think that Bush means anything messianic. I've pasted the article in full because the source requires a brief registration and I wouldn't want anyone to let that prevent them from reading.

Bush quietly meets with Amish here; they offer their prayers By Jack Brubaker Lancaster New Era
Published: Jul 16, 2004 12:53 PM EST
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - President Bush met privately with a group of Old Order Amish during his visit to Lancaster County last Friday. He discussed their farms and their hats and his religion.
He asked them to vote for him in November.
The Amish told the president that not all members of the church vote but they would pray for him.
Bush had tears in his eyes when he replied. He said the president needs their prayers. He also said that having a strong belief in God is the only way he can do his job.
This story has not been reported before. You might think an observant press follows the president everywhere, especially during a re-election campaign, but no reporter attended this meeting.
Sam Stoltzfus, an Old Order historian and writer who lives in Gordonville, spoke with a number of people present at the session with the president.
He related what happened to the Scribbler, saying the Amish “caught Bush’s heart.’’
The 20-minute meeting with Bush occurred immediately after the president addressed a select audience at Lapp Electric Service in Smoketown Friday afternoon.
An Amish woman who lives on a farm across Witmer Road from Lapp Electric that morning had presented a quilt to the president with a card thanking him for his leadership of the country.
Bush said he would like to talk to the quilter and her family.
So the Secret Service invited the family to meet the president. Friends wanted to come along, and the entire assembly eventually numbered about 60. They were evenly divided between adults and children of all ages.
The group walked together across the road to Lapp Electric.
Stoltzfus reports: “It took a while to get them through the metal detectors as these were farmers and shop men, with vice grips, pocket knives, and nuts and bolts in their pockets. Some ladies had baby gear. All pockets had to be emptied.’’
When the Amish were “found not to be a serious threat to national security,’’ they were allowed inside the office area of Lapp Electric and waited about 30 minutes for the president to appear.
“Babies got restless. Children squirmed,’’ Stoltzfus reports. “Suddenly the president and five Secret Service men stepped into the room. One housewife said, ‘Are you George Bush?’’’
The president replied in the affirmative and shook hands all around, asking the names of all. He especially thanked the “quilt frau,’’ who operates her own business selling quilts and crafts.
“He seemed relaxed and just like an old neighbor,’’ says Stoltzfus.
Bush said he had never met any Amish before and was curious about why the men were wearing straw hats rather than black wool hats. The Amish explained that they wear cooler straw in summer. Bush tried on a hat.
The president commented on the appearance of Amish farms, and an Amish man spoke apologetically about how he and his friends were not expecting to see the president and were wearing soiled work clothes. Bush said he did not mind that.
Another man remarked that he has twin daughters, as does Bush. The man said one of his twins had dreamed the night before that she was shaking hands with the president and now she actually had done that.
“One of the young girls wanted to give Bush a whoopie pie cookie,’’ Stoltzfus says. “Bush declined it. The Secret Service man took it, as presidents aren’t supposed to eat untested food.’’
At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job.’’
As the president left the room, one Amish man wished him good luck in November.
“The Amish group headed back to their farms and shops,’’ reports Stoltzfus. “Mothers took their children home for a nap and went back to their sewing and gardens.’’
Bush moved along to an appearance in York County, leaving behind a group of Old Order admirers who have tales to tell for the rest of their lives.

So that article had a dual effect on me - it reaffirmed my impression of Bush as having delusions of grandeur, which is hard to do (not to mention dangerous) when you are President of the United States; it also reaffirmed my impression that the Amish feel that, although they live in this country, they have no business dealing with it. This has always bothered me. As the article reads, not one of the attendees expressed any desire to participate in the vote, other than simply wishing Bush good luck and praying for him, which if you have met many Amish, they do for everyone.
Edit: spelling and punctuation.

Oh, I'm sure he'll make his OWN luck.
I don't know if Bush actually thinks he's doing God's work, or he just thinks he'll win over the religious types that way. Either way, though, it's pretty scary.

A college roomate who was epileptic and schizophrenic met a bum who told him god spoke through him, and that it was ok to stop taking his medication. He went missing for 3 days and upon his return, he nearly died from a grand mal seizure. Just another example of why one should not listen to, as it may be said, "false prophets".

I've got a different take on this.
The God I believe in doesn't approve of jabbing syringes in babies' heads and sucking their brains out.
Bush also disapproves.
John Kerry thinks it's a right worth fighting for.

Abortion debate...joy. It's the right to choose that he believes in...does he necessarily approve of such an act? I highly doubt it. Does anyone who is pro-choice think that it's a good thing to do? I highly doubt it. Me? I'm pro-choice...do I approve of such an act? No. Do I approve letting a woman decide if she should have such an act performed on a her? Of course. It's her decision, she has to live with it for the rest of her life. Do I approve of laws that tell people how to live their lives? Fuck no.
Vote Common Sense, 2004
If you're willing to raise the children after they are born, if you're willing to pay out of your own pocket for the education and living expenses and therapy for these unwanted children, then so be it. We're already overpopulated, and things are only get worse. And how do we stop this? Well, I would say teach common sense and the proper use of condoms, but instead you support a president who decides to spend millions of dollars to teach kids that "It's better not to have sex, even though it's against human nature and hormones not to." Do you see where I'm going with this? It's well beyond my realm of understanding how anyone with any ounce of common sense can support such bullshit. Please, enlighten me.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

I'm not here to get involved in a major political debate. This is the Frank Black Forum, where I come to interact with fans of Frank Black and the Pixies. We share a love for these bands, and I don't want to alienate or offend anyone here. I'm more than willing to talk politics elsewhere with people I don't care so much about (ie. the rest of the internet).
I will, however, comment when I see a bunch of people saying, "Let's all kick the president because he's dumb and everyone hates him." I'm here to say that not everybody hates Bush. I respect him and hold him in high esteem. I think that his degrees from Harvard and Yale should also do more to dispel the myth that he's an idiot. In reality, he's a smart man who is often poorly-spoken.
As for a debate over abortion, I will also not get too involved here. It's an area in which I'm not willing to budge an inch. I think that the baby's choice must be taken into account in addition to the woman's.
You talk about how Democrats support abortion despite not liking it. How, then, can you justify the claim that Bush is opposed to condoms? He (rightly) believes that abstinence is the best choice. If he was asked directly, however, if he thought condoms were better than unprotected sex, I think he'd definitely agree. From what I understand, he simply sees that promoting condoms could be taken as promoting sexual promiscuity.
You also talk about the unjust costs of raising unwanted children. How, then, am I supposed to feel when I'm told that my tax dollars should fund abortions?
An my final comment on the matter (and in this thread altogether, as I've already stated that I don't want an ongoing argument with a FB forum members leading to lingering bitterness), I believe what Bush was getting at in the comment that started this thread is that he looks to God for help with many decisions and prays for leadership from God. As such, he asks God to act through him as president. He does not think he is God.
With that said, I respect your opinions. I may disagree, but that's life. You disagree with me. You can feel free to reply, but I'm done. I simply entered this topic to help show that there is support for Bush, that not everybody thinks he's a moron, and that it's okay to support your president even if Michael Moore and Barbra Streisand have made Bush-bashing the in-thing. May peace be with you, and may we have more pleasant conversations elsewhere on this forum.

Then why the sig?
quote:

He got into Yale because he's a legacy (his dad and grandfather went there and that still to this day gives you an advantage in getting into Yale) and his GPA there was 2.0 I believe. He may be smart in some ways, but he certainly isn't as smart as most of the US Presidents.

Are you an American? Your profile says you're Canadian, and if true then it isn't your tax dollars. Also, I'm not certain US tax dollars fund abortions. Perhaps they do; I'm not sure.

(Yes, I know you were actually referring to what to do when you DON'T want children. But it's funnier my way. Or is it? Maybe not.)
I get the idea that Bush isn't only dumb, but he's also anti-intellectual. I mean, he purposely mispronounces "nuclear." He WANTS to be seen as dumber than he really is. I think he might be more misguided and power-hungry than anything else, though.

I don't think Bush had anything to do with that Moon coranation (sp?). Some congressmen were there, which is terribly embarrassing, and Moon owns the Washington Times, a rightwing paper, so anything out of that rag should be seen for what it is. |

REGARDING the abortion arguement.
Surely, in a day and age as this, everyone should have the freedom of choice? yes? Well then shouldn't abortions be available to all, and those against them...dont have them....call me stupid, but it seems pretty obvious to me.
I am totally for abortions. I would never bring a child in to this world that I could not provide for, or that i would not love. Not fully. You'd rather there were more and more unwanted, neglected and abused children in the world? Being neglected is worse than being killed. Its stays with you forever.
I would without question have an abortion. id have 10. Because I could not give and love a child to the standards it would desever to be loved. I could not care for it. There is no way I would bring a child in to a world where I can not provide for it.
And to be quite honest, I dotn think I could bring myself to bring a child in to a world as ugly as this.
Just thought I'd throw that in there... |

Oh please explain this and tell me it isn't a real quote!
It was reported by a German paper called Der Spiegel; and James Carville talked about it on CNN's Crossfire: full text link of that = http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0205/28/cf.00.html
" CARVILLE: Now it's time for a look at those unusual, interesting, and downright shocking stories that you might not find anywhere but in our CROSSFIRE news alert. In case you think we Democrats are too tough on George Bush, I assure you, we usually have good reasons. Listen to this. The German magazine, "Der Spiegel" reports that during last week's European summit, Mr. Bush asked Brazil's president, "Do you have blacks, too?" "Der Spiegel" says National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice had to quickly explain that Brazil probably has a larger black population than the U.S., and perhaps the largest black population outside of Africa.
If the question is open, I want to put up a picture of Pele. He's the man on the right, and perhaps the most famous Brazilian of all time, at one time the most famous human on the planet. He sure looks black to me. Well, maybe he's been in the sun too long. Mr. President, I don't know. "
And if you know German... http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,196865,00.html
Someone who translated it elsewhere said the Brazilian president was "astonished" by Bush's question (big surprise!) my oh my.
