In case apl and I are not the only ones to have been clueless about this, Devo is playing in New York and Chicago soon, and I don't know about any other dates.

And alas, I may have used up all of my travel time this year already. With at least two more shows that involve great distance on the horizon. I'm just not seeing a trip to see Devo in the cards. Though fudd... if you would be so kind as to post about it afterwards, I would appreciate the opportunity to live the experience vicariously through you.
Thanks in advance.

For some reason I've never heard a Devo record. I'm always worried I'm missing out on some realy good music so where do I start discovering Devo?

Oh good. Tanx fudd. Your enthusiasm in re: Devo Show is quite contagious. Ah... I'm thinking about wearing a hat and getting a job just in honor of your excursion.

I also recommend "Oh No It's Devo!" as a starting point.

Devo performed Friday night at Central Park in New York City. According to Mark it was their first show in NYC in 24 years. Opening acts were Stellastar (sucked; who told that woman she can sing?) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (sucked even worse; who told that woman she can sing?). Devo's set was quite short, but still worth the price of admission and getting soaked in the torrential rain after the show. Somehow the weather was scheduled perfectly; a drain-overflowing downpour started within a minute (I am not making this up) of the end of the show. But I am jumping ahead, and who cares about the weather anyway?
Despite a few errors, the show was great; this is Devo, after all. The worst mistake was that the band seemed to disagree about when Jocko Homo was supposed to end, and it just sort of fizzled to a stop. Gerry joked about how truly devolved it was. Bob 2 had trouble with two songs: he couldn't get the picked guitar part right in Gut Feeling, and started the synth part of Beautiful World in the wrong key.
First there was the General Boy film to introduce the band; even after all these years the audience full of Mr. Potatoheads is as funny as ever. The band came out wearing short-sleeved versions of the classic radiation suit uniform, which would later be torn off and thrown into the crowd, revealing black shorts and t-shirts. The opener was That's Good, followed by the obligatory hits Girl U Want and Whip It. Then the synths were mostly abandoned for guitars and the real fun came with a string of seven songs from the earlier records. This was Devo at their best. The set list is below; I am pretty sure it is complete, but the order is probably way off other than the beginning and the end. The band left the stage after Gates of Steel, and came back to play Freedom of Choice. Mark then said his goodnight and exited, and Booji Boy came out to take his place and close the show with Beautiful World.
That's Good Girl U Want Whip It Satisfaction Blockhead Mongoloid Jocko Homo Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA Uncontrollable Urge Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy Gates of Steel Freedom of Choice Beautiful World
Ask me if any of the mistakes bothered me the slightest bit. Hell no. The only thing disappointing was the length of the show. A few more tracks from Duty Now For The Future, and of course Come Back Jonee would have been quite welcome. Still, I am not complaining. Mark's, Bob 1's and Gerry's voices were the same, and their antics as goofy, and their songs just as great as they were two decades ago. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah YEAH. |

Man, that sounds like an awesome show. One day, they'll come over here, or I'll go the USA to see Devo. And I shall truly be a Spudboy.

What's funny about that setlist is that I only own The Best of Devo (not the Hot Potatoes), and I know nearly all of those songs.
EDIT - Okay, now that I take a look, the Devo CD I have is called Greatest Hits and 9 of the 13 songs on the setlist are on the CD.

Is anyone else going to be seeing Devo on this "tour"? In Chicago maybe, where I can stal- I mean meet you?
I don't remember being this excited for any other show. I'm doing an inner peepee-dance.
I hope it's longer than the NY concert. fudd, was it life-changing?

It was indeed life changing. It simply boggles the mind that this was the second-best show I have seen this year. If you had told me this a year ago I would have said you were out of your mind. I wouldn't hold out for a longer show. The setlist seems to be pretty stable, although you might get to hear Come Back Jonee.
