I need some advice, and google is laming out on me. I thought maybe you wonderful resourceful people might have some thoughts on this.
OK. I have an old clock that I made (about 10 years ago) with a long-mummified grackle (blackbird-type bird) wired to the top. I want to seal/sanitize the bird somehow to make sure that any old organisms are nullified or at the very least fixed (unable to be made airborne...haha no pun intended!).
There is always shellac, but that will change the texture and color of the feathers. I have spray fixative, but that will make it sticky and attract dust, and may not provide the coverage I need.
Anybody here have any experience with taxidermy, or have a suggestion for a product to try? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

I believe 'White Rain' hairspray might do the trick.
1. I am a fsh with no i's. 2. You must be wearing Zubaz, 'cause you're daring to be different. 3. I am a man with 3 fingers...but that doesn't count my index finger nor my thumb. |

I think White Rain and Vo5 are products of the devil, via Tammy Faye. Might do just the trick.

Definitely spray. Not that I'm ozone conscious or anything, but I like the way it globs.
Also, I've stayed at the same hotel as Tammy Faye once.

Although, there's a Minnesota connection here: Prince, Tammy Faye, and The Calistanian.

Will my use of Varathane lead to a life of dead bird abuse in Minnesota?
Is that a bad thing?

a little off topic, but this song rocks (also where i got my current sig and my nickname), it's from the dayglo abortions - here today, guano tomorrow.
Jim and Tammy bakker were messengers of god and the bank of america / Tammy sprays on some makeup, pops some downers and says "this must be heaven" / Jim is in the bedroom converting hookers on a mattress full of money meanwhile another 1000 people make their beds with death and misery and starvation / they were here, here for today but they'll be guano, guano tomorrow / now it's Reverend Fallwell's church and he has the need for a little more money / it will cost a lot to eliminate rock and stamp out the international threat of communism / Mister Reagan and Gorbachev will let us fight like animals in a barnyard / while they play the roles of the farmer the butcher, the distributor, and the consumer / the world is full of humanitarians killing each other for a piece of the human pie / where everybody is right and nobody is wrong and many are downtrodden / these people call me a cretin 'cause i get a little spittle in their eye / and they don't care much for us dayglos sittin' around and toasting to the end of time / we are here, here for today but we'll be guano, guano tomorrow

Nice lyrics. I'm off to find out more about this "Dayglo Abortions" of which you speak.
At their main page, and I like their style. Too bad the mp3 links don't work.

heheh. That was pretty funny there Erebus. heehee
If it makes anyone feel better -the bird was found that way. Maybe I shouldn't tell you all this, but in college, people got this idea that I wanted dead birds. Maybe it was my art, I had a couple pieces with bird subject matter. But it really just got way out of hand.
This bird was found by a couple of acid heads who were mowing someone's lawn and found it under a hedge, mummified as old Horus of the pyramids.
(I love birds, and used to volunteer at the Raptor Rehabiliation program at college. Maybe it was all those times I walked the big birds around campus that started it all.)

An old college roommate of mine used to collect dessicated frog carcasses. Evidently in the south many a frog headed crosscountry only to die, presumably of heat stroke, winding up thoroughly mummified on otherwise normal lawns. Don't know what he did with them. Spray paint them? Xmas ornaments? |

Myself and my (then future now current) wife picked out a mummified rat from an antique store counter display as a gift for my father. He was confused why we got him a filing cabinet at first. Didn't spray it with anything though. Just kinda came that way.

Hrrmmmm... can't believe I'm really pondering this question, but if it were me, I'd prolly spray the thing down with Lysol, let it dry and then coat it with clear liquid latex. Possibly a clear silicone. That should preserve that lil corpse for ya nicely.
