M-C-A! M-C-A!

OK chaps - first update.
Euro 2004 has kicked off with the first two matches in Group A:

Portugal 1 - Greece 2

Spain 1 - Russia 0

The Spanish result was quite predictable, but a shock (and most welcome) win for Greece against hosts Portugal.

Group A stands thus:

1) Greece (P1 W1 D0 L0 F2 A1 3pts)
2) Spain (P1 W1 D0 L0 F1 A0 3pts)
3) Portugal (P1 W0 D0 L1 F1 A2 0pts)
4) Russia (P1 W0 D0 L0 F0 A1 0pts)

There´s no reason to be afraid of Portugal. We´re harmless.
Whoever said this first game put enormous pressure under the portuguese was right, we started the game very nervous, and Greece scored in the first five minutes which complicated things.
The worrying thing is that we didn´t play anything during the rest of the game.
Scolari insists on utilizing players like Rui Costa and Fernando Couto who are way past their prime. And what is worse, is that we have better players for those positions, players like Deco and Ricardo Carvalho. You probably don´t even know who I´m talking about, but believe me, they´re much better than what we have right now in the starting line up.
From what I´ve seen tonight, Spain will go through easily.

Deco is going to Chelsea so hes name is buzzing about on tv programmes and such. My friends have been putting bets on, now usually im a betting man and I consider myself quite knowledgable on the whole subject. But when it comes to internationls its impossible to pick winners or losers or anythin. Theres no form to look at no nothin. Its a real hot potato in terms of betting.

It's a fucker because the England match gets played at about 2:00am over here and I have to return back to work tomorrow after a three week break, so I reckon I'm gonna miss the game. Saying that, it's probably on terrestrial tv out here so I guess I could possibly watch it in bed.

I'm no football fan but my predictions are that France will win it, I don't even think that England will make it past the group stages as we are generally crap in the Euro Championships. We don't have the imagination or creativity to win the tournament, and really are a bunch of underachievers seeing as we have some world class players in the squad.

Still it will be good to win tonight against the French, we need a win after we were convincingly crushed by the All Blacks yesterday in NZ.

Nah Stu, we will reach the semis, no dangers!

As for Greece, I don't think they will win the group but they should qualify now. Spain looked pretty impressive yesterday, I think they will win Group A.

Portugal need to start with Deco and Ronaldo from now on. They looked a lot better when they came on.

Bravo à la Grèce !!! A fast goal, a tough defense, great job MCA !

Portugal never found the key (still looking for it)
Half time replacements were rather spectacular : Simao and Rui Costa out and Cristiano Ronaldo and Deco in. It looked like a slap in the face of those who don't want Deco !!! But that guy is really good, he made it for Porto in Champions League. How come Scolari began the game without him ? (I wonder if Rui Costa is gonna play again ?...).

Spain logically beat Russia (too bad Cheeseman ...).

And now ladies and gentlemen, England-France !!!
This morning, I saw on a french football program an ITV's presentation of tonight's game : two middle age knights rushing at each others !!!
A remiscence of the hundred years war, guys ?

Incredible end !!!!
Englishmen had well defended, never done faults less than 40 meters from their goal line, and 1 minute before the end, fault of Heskey, fantastic free kick of Zizou (besides, James is still immobile ...).
And a penalty for the victory, thanks to Titi's perseverance after 90 minutes of frustration because of the great english defense.
Above all, thanks to Barthez who allows us not to get a 0-2 on Beckham's penalty.
We were that close from a defeat ... but we're still alive, for sure !!!
I really don't know how one can recover from such a disillusion !!!

Croatia and Switzerland look extremely weak. England and France will have no problems reaching the next stage.
England´s defense was great, but still, France didn´t look too impressive going forward, did it? Slow, not too many ideas, always attacking through the right-hand side or the middle of the field.
I really liked England, except for the Liverpool players. Gerard especially, didn´t play anything.

Good one, Remig !

The drawn game between Switzerland and Croatia looks like the best news of the day ...
If England tries more to attack, they should have their chance to see the quarter finals.
And please believe me, Englishmen, I don't say that in a condescending way.

That's right Velvety, England defended very well : with 8 defenders it's easier. But they did'nt dare to attack.
Actually France wasn't in thes best mood or shape.
Too many centres (very easy for King and Campbell), too many lost balls trying to go through to tne center of english defense (where there too many players), a kind of lack of imagination (why didn't we shoot on James when we were 20 or 25 meters from goal line ?), all that made a strange impression.
But, I repeat, it's tough to score against a team where 2 players try to attack and the rest of the team almost doesn't help them.

France won thanks to its competivity spirit and its top players (Barthez, Zidane, Henry).

i think france won because england made stupid mistakes, rather than france actually being better.

i think a draw (1-1) would have reflected the overall play throughout the game.

I enjoyed the french team much more
but it may have something to do with the fact
that I put my money on them

but that aside
from the 3 goals in this match none of them was
a real 'field' goal.
The english strikers were very bad in my opinion,
the midfielders and defenders did a solid game.
the french strikers were better but didn't touch the ball for at least
40 minutes of the game. And I believe the midfielders and defenders were too.

There were at least 3 english players on zidane, england defended way too much
Still they could have won, but that would have been totally missplaced.
I'm not saying that 2-1 for France is fair, but I think the french got there
because they were more aggresive than england.

i thought the game was really pretty boring until injury time.
england just played to defend their lead in the 2nd half, which rarely works and i was pleased to see their totally negative and defensive game plan destroyed, albeit only just.

I've never seen anything quite like that. Its easy to make a scapegoat of someone, but when you take off a man who has just anally raped three of the worlds 'greatest' defenders before being hacked down by THE LAST MAN, and replace him with EMILE MOTHERFUCKINISHOULDBEABOUNCER HESKEY things aren't looking up. The stupid piece of shit then proceeds to do nothing before giving away a freekick 28yards out to one of the best free kick takers in the world. Good one, retard.

I wrote that article! Ha, tremendous stuff.

A man worth 3.5 million and plays for Birmingham is better than. James Beattie a man who can head the ball and a proven top level goalscorer worth alot more than 5million easy!

Jermaine Defoe---^$&*$!"!!!%££%£$%$&( the same sort of player as heskey but he has the following:
The ability to score
The ability to scare defenders with pace and skill
A brain

Besides an awful crash killing all Englands top forwards I see no reason why Heskey should ever put a england shirt on again. Just so your aware I moaned about him long before he made the mistake.

"Why did Steven Gerrard decide now, of all times, to make his worst pass of the season? But, for me, most pressing of all, why did everyone's favourite Swede decide to substitute Rooney, who had the French defence pooping in their pants, and replaced him with the aforementioned Heskey, who doesn't even inspire fear in a gerbil?2

It'll be Wednesday Dean, against either Spain or Russia, I can't remember which. I want Greece to win the Group actually, basically because then England will get them rather than Spain in the quarterfinals. We kicka your backside!

To be honest I'd love to see the matchup too because I was mostly anticipating Greece's quick ejection by Portugal. Maybe this will give them the confidence and grit they need to have your knickers around your ankles.

Alternatively, they might get completely walloped by Spain and Russia, and not make it through at all. Hardy har har.

Field goal? This isn't American football!

As for the English strikers being very bad. Are you honestly trying to tell me that Trezeguet was better than Rooney? He did nothing except for one header.

At least my bets on France are still looking good. how about Sweden though eh? Pretty damn impressive in the end. Took them a while though.

Yeah, but you'd get beaten to death with watermelon by the shopowners underneath me.

Day 3 update

Italy 0 - Denmark 0

Sweden 5 - Bulgaria 0

A much-fancied Italian side manage to be subdued by a comparatively humble Denmark, who looked easily on a par with one of the tournament favourites for much of the game.
The other score speaks for itself - Sweden are usually regarded as a pretty dull team, but they played entertaining, high quality football tonight and soundly thrashed a feeble Bulgaria.

Group C as follows:

1) Sweden (P1 W1 D0 L0 F5 A0 3pts)
2) Denmark (P1 W0 D1 L0 F0 A0 1pt)
3) Italy (P1 W0 D1 L0 F0 A0 1pt)
4) Bulgaria (P1 W0 D0 L1 F0 A5 0pt)
