Now, I know many of you will not have the slightest interest in this, being unaware of the joys of football, but for those who are in the know: here's where you can vent your joy, your frustration, your wonderment, and your general overly biased opinions on the beautiful game.
So, we have one week to go until the festival of happiness that is Euro 2004. Clearly, we have favourites: France firstly (probably having the top two players in the world right now); Italy are looking good; You can never rule out Germany or Spain; and of course England, who looked good tonight beating Iceland 6-1. Point of note: Wayne Bridge, scoring left-back, is from my hometown. Which makes him cool.
Apart from England, I'm backing Latvia at 500-1. They do have a secret weapon in the ace Marian Parhars.
So: England fans, answer me these. 4-4-2 or Diamond? Why the continued presence of Heskey and Owen Hargreaves? Is Rooney the Next Big Thing? Whats our chances?
Neutrals: who do you fancy? Will France sweep all before them? Anyone else even have a chance?
Discuss.

Hmm, I agree with most of that Shakey, but I reckon Roonaldo's a bit special. I think the England side almost picks itself now, for the most part:
James G.Neville Campbell Terry Cole Beckham Lampard Gerrard Scholes Owen Rooney
Plus, you have some useful subs in Cole, Bridge, and some others.
However, looking at the expected French line-up... ouch. You've got: Thuram, Desailly, Pires, Zidane, Henry, Trezeguet, Makelele and a whole bunhc of others. Now that, my friends, is a world class team.

Here in France, we're only afraid of one thing: Portugal!
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore. |

Portugal? Really? So you're a little nervous of the Algarve or something, I wouldn't worry to much about the team...

Ah, yeah, but Desailly and Thuram will deal with him. I'd be more scared of Raul myself.

Portugal??? No chance. Even with the great Ronaldo.
Desailly didn't play tonight Simon, Silvestre did and he was very good. Desailly is too old now.
To be honest with you, except for the odd gorgeous flowing move, France looked a bit average tonight. Just shows you that even the best are poor sometimes, and obviously that is the time to beat them. England must hope they are average on Sunday, and that they can take advantage of any such drop in form.
The team pretty much picks itself for England, I wouldn't change anything. I am still not entirely convinced about Cole, I think maybe Bridge is better. Cole gets caught out defensively sometimes, although Bridge too can be guilty of this sometimes.
I would have liked Defoe to have made the squad, at the expence of Heskey perhaps or a midfielder.
I think we will make the semis. Beyond that, who knows.
Still backing France to win it though, beating Italy in the final.

I would have Francis Benali at the expense of Emile Heskey. I agree that its a toss-up between Bridge and Cole though, and I would've been happy to see Defoe in there, kid's gotta lotta talent.
I'm well chuffed for Frank Lampard though, he's had a brilliant season and I hope he really shines for England. John Terry too, he's been great for Chelski.
I'm still not entirely convinced by David James, but I think he'll do.

England will just choke once the pressure gets to them. they will then blame it all on someone, thus avoiding the truth that they simply aren't good enough to win it.
but it shall be an interesting few weeks.

HPM: in case you didn't remember, FC Porto won against Monaco in the Champions League, that's why we fear the portuguese right now. I didn't watch yesterday's game but I think the result is OK. Why would they bother winning 5-0 or something for a friendly game? One goal at the last minute is perfect IMO. And Zidane did it, which is even better.

That means nothing in Euro 04. This is national football not club football and Portugal have won nothing. Let us not forget that they failed miserably at the last World Cup and have not played a competitive match since. You should fear nobody, you're France, your the best! Fear only yourselves!

I've a sneaky feeling for Italy, winning it by winning all of their matches one-nil. Think if I was betting I'd go for France though. Zizou is the best. England have a great team on paper (although in my opinion they have the wrong captain - it should be Steven Gerrard), but just never seem to click. Bit like the Netherlands. And I fear for Rooney - if he gets wound up enough to take a swing at a Japanese guy in a friendly I would worry that he'll be targeted by defenders and get himself sent off.

Kay, so it was sweepstake time at work today. Who did I draw? Russia. Typical. I got Czech Republic as well, which ain't so bad, but I was slightly suspicious when the organiser picked Italy and England. Hmmmm...
Anybody overly excited yet? Portugal-Greece kicks off tonight, but the first real showpiece match (sorry MCA) is tommorow - England vs France. Its gonna be ace, even if we're blatantly going to lose.

I'm backing Russia this evening for obvious reasons... (see two posts up). Spain never quite cut it, so I think they have a chance. Portugal I think will win, they've got both quality and Big Phil Scolari.
Man, I'm looking forward to tomorrow night. I think England have a really good chance, even though they're definitely the underdogs. If we can sort a decent central defender to replace Ferdinand/Woodgate/Terry, I think we'll be on our way.

Spain have better players but they rarely make it in international tournaments. I don't know if there are some spanish FB netters around here, but traditionally spanish people prefer supporting their clubs than the national team. So Russians have a chance, sure. Portugal is favourite. Drawing or losing would be a very bad result in this group and not the best way for the organizer to begin, so I think they are under a big pressure.
England-France ... Well, as I often say (most of the time in order to get on my friends nerves ...), everything can happen during a football game : 11 vs 11 on the pitch, football is not mathematics and can't be rationalized, it's a chance ! (remember Senegal ...). But we are favourite and it wouldn't be a good idea to lose.

Its a game of two halves, Trevor.
It wouldn't be a good idea for anyone to lose, technically speaking.
