It didn't go well with Kim.
Since then, he never worked with female musicians.
When he talks about different artists he likes (music, but also films, books etc) he never quotes a single woman.
What do you think about it?
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore. |

i struggle to think of any female artists i particuarly like too... i'm hardly poster-boy for macho-ness... i don't think you're onto anything really.

Hey Bumble, I see you moved to Angola. It isn't exxactly the best country in the world, but it definitely is better than Manchester.
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore. |

I remember reading something several years ago, where he joked that when he hears most female singers of the acoustic-folk-singer variety, he feels like strangling them...in an interview he did with David Thompson of Pere Ubu(I think!), I believe they kinda slagged off female singers in general, but he was asked about that in another interview and he said something like he did'nt mean to sound so harsh, and that he meant that a lot of commercially successful female singers were kinda crappy and gave a bad name to female singers! In an old magazine where Courtney Love picked 'Gigantic' as one of her favorite songs, she said it seemed Kim had'nt been 'allowed' to write any more songs! I think there is a perception of FB belonging to this kind of male-dominated boy's club. I know what he means, although really there's no reason to discriminate between male and female-just good and bad! |

I have the Pere Ubu CD with the discussion between Frank and David Thomas. It's the "Kathleen" promo single from 1993. The first Frank solo record and Pere Ubu's The Story of My Life were brand new at the time. This topic starts (as heard on the CD at least) with David Thomas mentioning that "he's never counted the women in rock" and they both chat about how neither of them is interested in female rock vocalists with a few exceptions.
The first exception Frank mentions is Joan Armatrading. David Thomas's exception is Linda Thompson. Frank also comments that he doesn't listen to female rock singers because "you can't fantasize that it's you singing (when listening to a female rock singer)".
David Thomas is more harsh than Frank (Thomas builds a scenario where girls below age 21 or something aren't allowed to buy rock records - "You'd solve a whole lot of problems", he says). To this day on the Pere Ubu website, Thomas writes that rock music is made by men and when women are involved it's because they've been accepted as honorary members of the "brotherhood". One should note though that A) a woman, Michele Temple, has been a member of Pere Ubu for almost 10 years now and B) though he doesn't seem to be sarcastic, David Thomas does have the dryest sense of humor on planet Earth. |

| All I've got to say is that if Frank ever performs a duet with a female other than Kim,I'd love it to be with any of these girls who I admire and buy their records:Juliana Hatfield,Tanya Donelly,Linda Mallari (yeah Joey's wife,from The Martinis,their new album Smitten is the greatest Indie Power Pop Record Of The New Millenium!!!),Dolores O' Riordan from The Cranberries or Kelley Deal!!! I think that most of you will totally agree with me that some of Frank's most beautiful songs are about women and relationships.I love the scene from Headache's video when he is whispering into the girl's ear,that's brilliant and truly shows his romantic side!!!He can sing and perform with bravado but the only thing that made me uncomfortable reading was when he admitted to kicking a guitar towards Kim on stage one time that she was late for a concert.The funniest macho thing I've heard Frank say is in one of the live recordings I have.He is thanking someone in the audience who gave him a necklace earlier before and he say's "sorry it didn't fit around my masculine neck!!!Ha Ha Ha!!! Has anyone heard this? |

Frank and Dave Thomas have to respect PJ Harvey. Even Captain Beefheart likes her! If she isn't a great rock singer, than neither is Frank.
If Adnan is talking about Frank being gay, I'm not sure. I know a lot of people who assumed he was. I doubt he'd be someone who'd hide it or fool himself into thinking he wasn't though.

| Recall in the MUSIC FRANK LIKES discussion that FB himself listed "Brand New Key" as his #1. And it ain't a man singing that thing. Not to mention the famous classified ad: INFLUENCES: Peter, Paul and MARY and JS's remark in a long-ago article that he and FB were glad it was Kim who showed up, because (and I paraphrase here) "Charles wanted a female backup singer for the band." |

I too have the interview of Thomas and Thompson, I heard that the breeders were supposed
to do a show with pere ubu or a tribute or something and that they refused after hearing

No I didn't mean Frank was gay, but I really think the world he has created is very masculine - which is probably why there are so few girls on this forum...

Jack White does constantly, but he may be a pretty big exception.

Not enough. Manitoba is one of the best songs in SMYT. I like female voices specially, don't know why. There are only 2 or 3 male singers in my preferences.

you dont gotta be macho to not like female singers/etc. myself, i just dont prefer them...i dont know why, its like not liking rap or polka...it just is that way.
honestly, the only music i listen to with female vocalists outta the uber-fuckload of music i got is Sonic Youth, Swirlies, Thingy, Eric's Trip/Elevator*, Beekeeper, and the only band i like that's solely female singing is Lush's stuff off their first EPs and Spooky (pre-pop).
it's like that. i prefer the male voice in music. go figure... |

I always find chick bands kind of annoying it's very rare that I want to listen to an entire album by a female singer more than once. And I don't think it's an overly masculine world the world of Frank... well either that or I'm a really butch laydee

I do have to agree with Frank about not being able to fantasize (though that might not be the word I chose) or genuinely sing along with female singers... it can be done, of course, but there's never that great feeling you get when you hit the vocals exactly.
But I enjoy the Breeders and a few other female fronted bands like Metric where Emily Haines just has a really sexy voice that gets me fantasizing in an altogether different way. :) I really enjoy female backing vocals though and I think a lot of Pixies songs wouldn't be what they are without Kim's parts.
Really, can you imagine WIMM without any 'Ooooh-ooohs'. So can I. But it wouldn't be as good. :)

sonicly, the voices of men and women are different.
like instruments, use them to create whatever.
the pixies wouldn't be at all the same or, in my opinion as good, sans kim.
there is a lot of stupid music featuring women that is heavily promoted. this does not indicate that the quality of work done by women is substandard in general, it indicates an industry more obsessed with sexuality and appearance than music. this is a diservice to those of us who don't suck. i believe they, the mainstream labels, underestimate the public.
a lot is changing right now.

I agree betty. I used to mostly enjoy the lower pitched male voice. I used to think it sounded richer somehow. But as I've been listening to more music before unbeknowst to me (such as Pixies, Breeders, amps, etc..) the female voice is also to be appreciated. I dunno, its kinda like what you can do with your voice too. I'm big on that, experimenting with it as you would an instrument.
