1. Pixies-Bossanova
my all time favourite it combines my love for the pixies' indierock and the surf guitar, with a nice (highly arranged) production.
2. Guided By Voices-Alien Lanes
it's so hard to pick a GBV record, there are lot's of them! Bee thousand is great too and from the more recent years I love Universal Thruths and Cycles. There newest one (and last one) Half Smiles of the Decomposed sounds like a great closer too. So why Alien Lanes? The album just keeps on going, minimum pauses between songs, just like a Lo-Fi jukebox or radio. From the moment A Salty Salute starts it's just a classic. Lot's of songs sound horrible or even like filler, but every song has at least one hook, one line, one riff, etc, that will stick in your head for ages.
3. The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson-Smile I have to agree with NimrodsSon, what I have heard from bootlegs and at the BW gig in Amsterdam last year it just so much better than everything the Beach Boys ever did (even better than Pet Sounds)
4. Throwing Muses-Limbo You got to pick one I think! It's my favourite muses album, it's so poppy, I seemply love it. I have a weak spot for Kristin Hersh, she is on her top of the game on this one.
5. Weezer-Pinkerton haven't listened to it in ages, but pure for opening my eyes and ears to indierock I love this album. By far the best weezer album and I agree they kinda lost it from there. The songs sounds so smart so beautifully arranged. Tired of Sex is the best opener on any weezer album, nice bass, nice riff, nice vocals, nice moog!
is this all? man! anyday I would give you another list! Where is FB and the C's? damn I forgot to put it on my list! ......

1. Beatles - Abbey Road My aunt introduced them to me back in 78 or 79. She gave me Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour, both which where recorded the year I was born. That is when I started my record album collection. I was a Beatles fanatic up until the mid 80's around the time I joined the Navy. Abbey Road is the one album of theirs that still gets the most play from me.
2. Pixies – Doolittle This was tough, but I had to go with this instead of Surfer Rosa only because I’ve had it in all of my car’s on re-play for 15 years. It’s true, I’ve had the same cassette in three different cars since 1989, I even took it with me to Greece last year and it made it back in one piece.
3. Frank Black – Teenager of the Year This has also been in my cars since 93. It also took a trip to Greece with me. The cassette now resides in my wife’s car only because it is my son and daughters favorite to listen to. Let’s all hear it for the Hoo Hoo song.
4. UFO – No Heavy Petting
You might like you standard 70’s rock, but I love my alternative 70’s rock.
5. X – More Fun In The New World
I can still remember hearing “The new world” on the radio for the first time. It was on WAPP in NYC in 1983. I remember an interview Ray Manzarek said, ‘If the Doors where around today they would sound like X’. I didn’t believe him at all, but I was sold regardless.
Honorable mention. Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes My favorite Live album hands down.

I like this game. But I can never decide. I think I'll say:
1. Pixies - Doolittle (the epicenter of it all for me, music-wise) 2. Elvis Costello - This Year's Model (almost the same thing) 3. Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers from the Universe (amazing post-post-pre-post-rock... or something - anyone know/listen to these obscure geniuses?) 4. Primus - Frizzle Fry 5. Frank Black - Teenager of the Year (best ever, naturally)
that only leaves out about 2000 other albums I love. But its conversational to limit it to five.
Alienation confers freedom. Obscurity will keep you pure. Pray that you won’t be discovered young, so that you won’t be tempted to sell out early, or won’t be seduced by celebrity.

OK, now you join in. If enough people still want to contribute, I'll update every now and then. Remember, Primus only need 15 more votes to equal TOTY.

fuck.
elvis costello - "this years model"--this was tough. "armed forces" and "get happy" are right there with it, but i just had to go with TYM.
the beatles - "rubber soul"--this album is just so gorgeous. and for the record, this is the british version i'm listing.
pixies - "trompe le monde"--'the happening' is my favorite pixies song, but as far as charles' mastorwork, this is near the very top.
frank black and the catholics - "show me your tears"-- i'm quite certain this is my favorite catholics release. every ounce is perfection.
neko case - "blacklisted"--this is the most beautiful album ever made.

Fair enough shine, I'll let you off as you have a unique and interesting perspective on your choice of music.
At least you've binned the Ned's - it was never like that was going to get more than one vote.

Prince-- Purple Rain. This is the first album that I bought and got in trouble for. (Thriller was "ok") Madonna-- Like a Virgin. This is the album that told me women could be sexy and you can dres funky. It got me in trouble too. U2-- Joshua Tree. The album was ok but I couldn't go to the concert at the last minute because my mom thought I would be drugged and then jump off the balcony. Violent Femmes-- This is the album that taught me about "alternative" music. It got me in trouble. Pixies-- Doolittle the album that turned me on to my favorite musicians... and kept me happy and got me in trouble too.
Maybe I just like getting into trouble. Music is worth rebeling for. |

1) Ash 1977
I listened to this album loads when it first came out, and for some reason never stopped, even if it does have quite a teenage-y feel to it. I really like 'Goldfinger' and 'Girl From Mars.'
2) Belly - King
It was a toss-up between this and Tanya Donelly's Lovesongs For Underdogs, but then I have listened to 'Red' hundreds of time and could listen to this album on repeat. I prefer it to 'Star' because it seems more aggressive and punchy, and with each listen reveals new layers.
3) De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising
The album that got me into 80s hip-hop, there's not a lot to say about this album except that it's amazing.
4) My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Love what they do with sound.
5) Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson
A concept album that actually works, 'Ballade de Melody Nelson' is gorgeous.

After reading some other posts I remembered some good albums.
1) The Strokes - Room On Fire For some reason everyone seems to think this album sucks. I just think First Impressions Of Earth was horrible.
1)The Cure - Staring At The Sea The only Cure album I have, and it's my mom's, but I listen to it more than her. Now it's lost.
2) CAKE - Pressure Chief This is pretty much the best album of any band that I have. It should be #1 but I don't feel like moving it.
3)Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Just an awesome album
4)Frank Black & The Catholics - Self Titled I just bought it recently, and love it because it sounds kinda like TOTY, but I got bored of TOTY a long time ago.
4)Frank Black - Teenager Of The Year Much better than FB&TC'S
5)The Dears - No Cities Left I actually don't have this album yet, but I heard a few songs off of it, and think it's going to be good.
5)The Strokes - Is This It Still the best Strokes album yet.
Always keep this popular alien phrase in mind: An apple to the day maintains absent doctor. |

1)Oasis - Definitely Maybe - Simply the best debut album of any band ever. Or probably just the best album of any band ever. Favourite track - Live Forever
2)Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? - First album I truly fell in love with. Every song is a classic. Favourite track(s) - Some Might Say/Don't Look Back In Anger
3)Frank Black - Teenager of The Year - What can I say? Calistan, Superabound and Thalassocracy are just a few of the great songs on this album. There are a few tracks that don't reach the standard of the rest (Speedy Marie, Vanishing Spies) but overall this is a damn fine piece of work. Favourite track - Abstract Plain
4)Pixies - Surfer Rosa - No explanation needed, it's just perfect. Favourite track - Vamos
5)Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP - I don't usually like rap but this is just amazing. I started listening to it when it was the coolest thing in school when I was about 11 years old and it's just stuck with me ever since. The lyrics are so funny but with a serious edge to them. Favourite track - I'm Back
The albums in this list are likely to change, especially albums by the Pixies or Frank Black as these favourites are changing daily. In fact, the whole list could probably be entirely different by next week, so this whole post may have been a pointless exercise for me. Oh well...

I don't like OK Computer as much now as I did back in May of 2004. Yes, it did take a lot of studio crafting, but once you get passed all the bells and whistles, it really stands as nothing more than a well-sequenced collection of 11 mostly great rock songs and one preachy 2-minute piece of social commentary that isn't really that intelligent or intimidating. Worth the $17 I spent for the vinyl version, though.
I still love Zaireeka as much as I ever did. |
