obviously this is virtually impossible, so i will list the five albums that i would choose right now... which changes weekly
pixies-bossanova (while doolittle is hailed as the masterpiece, no cd I have ever heard elicites as much emotion than this one) modest mouse- lonesome crowded west. (I am a big fan of these guys and all of their albums are worth having, but this one takes the cake) a tribe called quest-midnight marauders. (the best "rap" cd ever made) pavement-brighten the corners fb-teenager of the year/frank black tie..
of course I love all the pixies and fb solo and catholics, I just wanted to pick a few different |

For now, I'll say:
XTC - Skylarking Frank Black - Teenager of the Year Moxy Früvous - Bargainville They Might Be Giants - Lincoln Pixies - Bossanova
That's certainly subject to change, though.

For all those who posted that they are likely to change, I'll mention my rules again: feel free. Just edit the original post rather than reposting the whole lot. At some point in the future I'll notify you of a deadline and let you fight it out.
Just out of interest, has anybody ever heard Groop Dogdrill, who are on my list? They were around a couple of years ago, but never made it very big. I'd just be interested to see if anyone else likes them.

Weezer - Pinkerton - I must have listened to this record from start to finish at least 50 times when I was 16. The words of Rivers Cuomo were like the Bible for me at the time. And now that I listen to the lyrics 8 years later, they seem to mean entirely different things.
Pixies - Doolittle - While Bossanova was the record that I first really listened to (I bought Surfer Rosa at the same time and it took a lot longer for me to fully appreciate that... I think today was the first time I REALLY got into it), Doolittle stands as the strongest Pixies album overall, the one that I seem to reach for the most, though Come On Pilgrim really is a close runner-up.
Beatles - White Album - I almost want to say that the American version of Rubber Soul is my favorite (even though Nowhere Man isn't on it, the US version has an earthier sound and better flow than the UK version), but the White Album just has so much range and so many fantastic songs. There's no discernable theme, but it all flows flawlessly despite the twists and turns. I enjoy every song. Hell, I even like Revolution 9, I used to listen to that over and over when I was 14.
Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain - I think Pavement is a great band, and Malkmus is my guitar idol, but I still have never been completely blown away by EVERY single song on a Pavement record. There's usually a few songs that I can never get into and usually just skip, and I'm not a big track skipper with bands that I really like. It usually tends to be songs towards the ends of their records that I don't dig all that much. Crooked Rain wins as my favorite Pavement record because it only has one song, Heaven is a Truck, that I don't care for. I didn't really like Fillmore Jive for a long time, but now I've come to understand it and like it. But Hit the Plane Down is one of the best Spiral Stairs songs ever, I just love the groove to it, it's very much like the Fall. And Stop Breathing is possibly the greatest Pavement song of all-time, and definitely the best outro of all-time for any song. I feel odd having the first half of this commentary on the album saying something negative, but I'm not really being bashing the band in any way. I just have noticed that there's a few songs on each album that I don't really get into, but I love the majority of their material. Pavement and the Pixies are the two bands that I've gotten into in the last few years that really got me excited again about both listening to music and playing music.
Ween - The Pod - It's really hard for me to pick one Ween record as my favorite. I had to sit and really think about it, but in the end the dark murkiness of the Pod wins out over the oceanic 3/4 seachanty of the Mollusk, the playful brightness and funk of Chocolate and Cheese, and the mythical, somewhat-ethereal new record quebec. The Pod is just Ween at their most raw. The guitars don't sound properly tuned on many songs, the drums are all programmed (as is most of the bass), the vocals range from high and soulful to sludgy and lazy, there's songs about ordering Mexican food, captains named Fantasy, pork rolls, making awesome sounds, a girl named Molly, having mononucleosis. The record is produced in the a primitive format, and there's mistakes galore throughout the record, but they don't really sound like mistakes to me anymore. It all just sounds like a masterpiece. Everything falls in all the right places, and there are very few records out there which compare to this one when it comes to experiencing it while stoned. The only track I don't care for is She Fucks Me, but a much greater live version is out there on the Paintin' the Town Brown disc, so I even can like the crappy version here since if it weren't for that there would be no live She Fucks Me. So, as Biggie would say, it's all good, baby BABY!

That is a great outro.
...but I think 'Range Life' is sort-of their tippy-top track.
To me, Malkmus' songs never came across as being very, um, emotional. 'Range Life' seemed somehow sincere.

Never heard of Groop Dogdrill before. I've ordered a few cd's from Amazon after going through this thread. I'm waiting for Groop Dogdrill, Jen Trynin, Bettie Serveert, Godspeed and Dirty three.
A few excellent albums have been mentioned here, I am not changing my list but I can understand how these albums could make a top 5.
Liz Phair - Exile, Neil Young - Ragged Glory, Pavement - Crooked Rain, Low - Things we have lost, Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, Radiohead - OK Computer, Pixies - Trompe, REM - New Adventures, Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones, FB - TOTY, Elliot Smith - XO, Sonic Youth - Evol, The Smiths - The Queen is dead, Leonard Cohen - New skin, Blondie - Paralel lines

Yep, I ordered Every Six Seconds. I'm looking forward to it, the bits I heard on Amazon sound like it should be good. Amazon is just damn slow with dispatching, I've ordered on Tuesday and they've still not dispatched.
Have you heard the album Low and Dirty Three has done together. I forget the title now but I've ordered that on impulse too.

2. Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue (any album with "The Best of Jill Hives" HAS to be recognized) 3. Flaming Lips - Zaireeka (Ineffably miraculous exemplary of genius) 4. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats (for those who don't respect this album: I challenge you to write a song as good "Peaches en Regalia"; what a riff) 5. Radiohead - OK Computer (I can't even comprehend how much work it took to construct a monolith like this)
Ron Carter's Pastels was close, Ramones are a great band to whom one album does not do justice, an album by The Residents was also very very close, and NUMBER ONE ON THE LIST I left absent; I'll have to wait until Smile comes out. I like the songs on bootleg versions of Smile slightly better than those of Pet Sounds. |

oh i like that song 'big dipper'. oh don't know much else of bts's stuff, but a couple of my friends love 'em and gave me a few songs on a copied cd.
and i agree with the changing of pixies and frank faves, its just hard cos they both changes styles so much and so often they all hold different moods or whatever.
as for my list, this definitely isn't definite, cos i haven't even heard all the albums i want to hear yet. and then i've more to discover after that...and this is my favourites right now.
1. shins- 'chutes too narrow' it's just a really good bunch of songs, and james mercer is a really good lyricist.
2. Guided by voices- mag earwig first album of theirs i got into
3.Smiths-' the very best of...' kinda cheating but i only really got them in the past couple of weeks, even though i owned 'louder then bombs' for ages. but i could never get into it, til i heard morrissey on jools holland doing 'irish blood english heart' 'first in the gang to die' and ' there is a light that never goes out. morrissey's new album is really good too. and the beta band's new one!! this list sucks.
4. pixies- 'surfer rosa' at present.
5. frank black- 'devil's workshop' its the last i listened to. |

You should've listened to a different Frank Black album last. As far as I'm concerned, Devil's Workshop is one of his weakest records. But hell, it's still not bad. Take all the best songs from most modern radio bands, add them up, and they still couldn't score as high as San Antonio, Texas or His Kingly Cave do on my list. I just don't really care for the latter half of the record all that much, and it's far too short to be priced the same as Black Letter Days.

Fuck! I listened to it earlier, after I made that post, and goddamn, it's a kickass record. While I listened to it quite a bit after it's release, I mostly focused on the first half. The second half never quite grabbed me. But now that I listen back and remember these songs, it's struck me how kickass the record really is. Okay, I withdraw my earlier comment about it being one of the weaker FB albums.

Pixies - Surfer Rosa - we all know what an aural onslaught this is
Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona - yeah, I know she says she didn't like the whole major label/studio/production thing, but dammit it sure came out sounding good
Violent Femmes - debut - alternates with Hallowed Ground depending on how suicidal I'm feeling, but let's go with the debut
The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics - struggling with what to say here - they are STILL ahead of their time (or our time, or something like that) - if you are not clued in to this just go buy it already and find out where it really all began
Oingo Boingo - Nothing to Fear - Elfman said Oingo Boingo wasn't punk, but it was; and with a horn section; too genius for words |
