Right, we haven't had a decent best albums poll in a while. I'm proposing that each one of you posts your absolute, definitive (or as near as possible) Top 5 Favourite Albums. After everyone thats going to post has posted, I'll tot 'em up and announce a winner. Here's some rules: 1) You can only post one Top 5. By all means comment, but don't go posting another entry, I'll hunt you down and box your ears. 2) If you want to change your Top 5, fine, but please edit your former list and don't write a replacement one. 3) You are allowed 5 albums, obviously. 4) These need not be in ranking order, I plan to assign equal importance to each entry. 5) This is an absolute Top 5, so Pixies and Frank Black are most welcome, and there are no other restrictions as to what style of music, or whatever, can appear on your list. 6) Also, I had better just make the distinction, this is your favourite albums, not what you consider to be the best albums ever. There's a subtle difference.
OK then, here's my Top 5 to kick things off:
Groop Dogdrill - Every Six Seconds Radiohead - OK Computer Pixies - Come On Pilgrim Low - Things We Lost In The Fire
Therapy? - Troublegum M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
Play on!
EDIT: Sorry, shine, Therapy out, M83 in.

OKay, this is hard. I reserve the right to come in later and call my choices CRAP but here goes...
Liz Phair - EXILE IN GUYVILLE. I just love it. There are so many PERFECT lyrics and it has just been with me for some very important moments in my life. I think every girl in their early twenties should be required by law to own it.
Jen Trynin - GUN SHY TRIGGER HAPPY. Another very personal one for me and one that I never get sick of. I am still hearing new things in it, even after a million some listens.
Frank Black and the Catholics - BLACK LETTER DAYS. I love them all but this is my most favorite. Again, a million listens and I am still finding things I adore. All that said, I could do without the whining in 1826...
Blondie - PARALLEL LINES. Love SUNDAY GIRL. Love PICTURE THIS. It's just the bomb.
Billy Bragg - WORKERS PLAYTIME. #5 is a hard choice, but this is just another CD that I carried with me during some difficult and big moments. When I first moved to California at 21 years old, I played SHE'S GOT A NEW SPELL constantly and MUST I PAINT YOU A PICTURE is one of the sweetest love songs. Ever.
Wow. I am horrified about some people that I left off - choosing just five is hard!
********************************************************** there's fire if you want it, let me know. I'm sick and tired of letting go... |

Yeah, number 5 was a tricky one. I had four definites, and it was a toss-up between several for the last spot. Its torture, I tells ya.

It has been a while.
My top five:
Shudder to Think - Pony Express Record
Was not my favorite S2T album until fairly recently. It's certainly one-of-a-kind. Beautiful.
Leonard Cohen - New Skin For The Old Ceremony
His best.
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Not an ounce of filler. Reminds me of driving around NW Ohio w/my then fiance.
King Crimson - Larks' Tongue In Aspic
Fripp/Wetton/Bruford/Muir. Perfect!
Flux of Pink Indians - Strive To Survive Causing The Least Suffering Possible
A bit self-indulgent. Causes me to arrive for work a bit hoarse. Lotsa singin' along.

top 5 (as of this second):
1. The Beatles - The Beatles (White Album) Almost anything you could want in a record - traditional pop, rock, blues, folk, sound collage, plus some of the best songs of all time - "Long, Long, Long," "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and "Blackbird."
2. Frank Black and the Catholics - Dog in the Sand The best thing Charles Thompson has ever done. I still marvel at how this was recorded live. The album that convinced me that the Catholics trumped the Pixies.
3. Pixies - Doolittle That being said, Doolittle is a close rival to DITS. Although lately i've been more of a Come on Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa type guy, Doolittle is, as an album, flawless. The raw "Silver" to the shiny "Here Comes Your Man" show that the Pixies could do anything they wanted to, and do it well.
4. Weezer - Pinkerton Even though i despise emo, this is where it really began. Confessional, catchy, three minute power-pop with really rough edges. Worth the price for "El Scorcho" alone.
5. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme The sound is indescribable. Go buy this now if you don't already own it.

1. Pixies - Doolittle 2. Weezer - Pinkerton 3. Mclusky - Do Dallas 4. Pixies - Trompe Le Monde 5. Frank Black & The Catholics
Its probably not in any order. I like alot of other bands but weezer, frank and pixies and possibly mclusky are the only ones I consider greats.
I May've Joined The Cult Of Frank If I Knew What The Balls Was Going On.

Heh heh, yours was one of the few I could predict Malax, I knew there'd be a Nclusky on there. I can also say now, Jim will have Pet Sounds.

Beach Boys - SMiLE Never even finished and still the greatest album ever. Everything about it is absolutely perfect (except of course the fact that it wasn't completed). The production is by far the best I've ever heard, but what I love most about this album is definitely the songwriting, and that is the main reason why I have this above Pet Sounds.
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Where do I start? It's simply incredible--production, arrangement, songwriting (although the songwriting isn't in my opinion as fully developed as SMiLE)
Frank Black and the Catholics - Black Letter Days This album is full of great songs (every single one of them). I guess it's really special to me because it was my first Frank Black album, and it just blew me away when I discovered he could write songs like these after I had been listening to all the Pixies music. The standout track for me is definitely How You Went So Far. That song blows me away and sends chills down my spine every time I hear it; it's absolutely gorgeous.
Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years "Blow wind blow, wherever you may go. Put on your overcoat, take me away." Not a day goes by when one of these songs doesn't get stuck in my head. This album is fifty minutes of gravel-throated, pump organ, songwriting perfection. "Your innocent when you dream!" Need I say more?
Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs This album is a perfect example of how simplicity can many times be great. The mood of this album is the main reason I love it. It's just calm and warm and beautiful. Dark Globe is a fantastic song and Here I Go is, as the chorus says, "Kinda catchy." Every song on this album is beautiful.

Frank Black - Frank Black
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Beatles - White Album
The Fall - Dragnet
Cass McCombs - A
This is hard. The first four will always be my favourites, but number five is generally what I've been listening to recently and like a lot. Saying that, if this was out of six, then number five would be easy.

nice and nasty thread simon...
1. Young Team - Mogwai changed the way i think about music. the power and aggression in songs such as Mogwai Fear Satan and Like Herod juxtaposed with the beautifully pretty ditties such as Ttracy make it unparalelled in terms of impact.
2. Doolittle - Pixies now, actually this changed the way i think about music first. have never known of a record to have had such impact on me upon my first listen all those years ago. how could it be so perfect?
3. Horse Stories - Dirty Three my funeral album. how drums, violin and guitar can produce such a plethora of emotions is the thing that gets me about this record. I Knew It Would Come To This is the only song i have ever cried while listening too - not bad for instrumental music.
4. Hips + Makers - Kristin Hersh i hated this record for about a year after hearing my sister play it - it was just so girly. but once i made the connection with the throwing muses, i gave it another chance. thank god i did. Kristins voice is phenomenal, and her songs are out of this world.
5. f#a#(infinity) - Godspeed You! Black Emperor purchased without ever hearing them before, and from the first 'lyris' of the monolgue in Dead Flag Blues (intro) of "the cars of fire and there's no driver at the wheel" i was hooked. how 9 people can come together and produce such coherent music is still amazing to me.....everybody should hear this record.
right there' my five. actually, looking back at it - i bought 3 of these 5 albums without hearing anything from the artist beforehand....

I kinda cheated. If I was 100% honest I would only rank Pixies/FB albums in my top 5 ! |

Hey, I just posted my list in another thread... Here it is again, this time with my comments:
1) Pixies - Trompe Le Monde Back in '97 when I really got into the Pixies, I made me a tape with TLM on A-side and Bossanova on B-side, and I spent the next two years listening to that tape at least once a day. That makes a minimum of 730 listenings.
2) Massive Attack - Blue Lines I really think Massive Attack are shitty now; I didn't like Mezzanine and didn't even buy 100th Window. But their first album is a true masterpiece, the record I want to offer to all the people I know.
3) Jaco Pastorius - Word Of Mouth. It all started when I visited a friend of mine, and I heard the most wonderful solo ever, and it was the harmonica part of Liberty City. From the crazy bass solo of Chromatic Fantasy to the amazing vocals of John and Mary, everything's insanely great in this record.
4) David Bowie - Low I've always considered myself a big fan of David Bowie, and then last year I bought Low, and realized he could be even greater than I thought. FYI, the first song, Speed Of Life, is the best song ever to wake up to.
5) Transglobal Underground - Rejoice Rejoice #5 was very hard to select, it was a tie between Show Me Your Tears, Talking Heads' Fear Of Music, and the Beatles' Abbey Road, but I'm choosing the TGUG cause I wanted to put some electro in my list. In this album they put a lot of influences, recording with musicians from all over the world, and sound like no other. Delta Disco, Ali Mullah, City Of Gold, Rude Buddah, Sky Giant are amazing songs that make me happy for the rest of the day.

Pixies - Trompe Le Monde Frank Black - Teenager Of The Year Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun Pixies - Surfer Rosa
3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003 - all involved parties rank EVERY released FB song from FB self/titled to the present - average ranks are calculated - beer (or suitable substitute) is added (mostly in drinking-game form - ie. rate a song well below its average and you drink a punishing amount), then sit back and enjoy a day of frank black....the only problem is quite often memory of the top songs is somewhat limited the next day |

Damn!
Much easier then :
01- Bossanova 02- Teenager of the Year 03- Come on Pilgrim 04- Doolittle 05- Trompe le Monde followed by Dog in the Sand and Surfer Rosa.
But I think I wasn't the only one not to be honest. Am I the only one to think Frank is WAY above everybody else ?!? (which doesn't mean everybody else sucks, hence my first list.) |

In no order I picked the ones that I've liked the most AND can still listen to.
"Teenager of the Year" I thought is was then and still think it's the perfect album. It always seemed to me that almost every song could've been a single.
"Taking My Time" Bonnie Raitt, From the early seventies-probably what Janis Joplin's albums would've sounded like.
"Here Today, Tomarrow, Next Week" Sugarcubes, It's just fun music, and like the Talking Heads, it just puts me in a better mood.
"A Night To Remember" Cyndi Lauper, I probably like it for sentimental reasons more than anything else, but when I hear certain songs from this album I feel the exact same way I did when I first heard it.
"Get Happy" Elvis Costello, The only good thing about when I lived in Greenfield, MA, was listening to this with a bottle of gin and the day off from work. |

1.) Trompe le Monde - Pixies So many beautiful songs on this album. The most complex of any Pixies album.
2.) Pornography - The Cure This is a fucking dark album. The mellow guitars creep me out. I love The Hanging Garden and Siamese Twins!
3.) Pistolero - Frank Black and the Catholics I think it might be the most perfect FB and the C's album to date.
4.) Teenager of the Year - Frank Black Do I really need to say anything?
5.) Abbey Road - The Beatles I love the way the end flows together seamlessly. Beautiful.

* Pixies - Trompe Le Monde

* Frank Black - Teenager of the Year
* Ramones - Alive (I'm pretty sure that's the correct title for their 1977 or so Warner/Sire live album)

Okay, let me think now...
1) Pixies - Bossanova (this is what got me into the Pixies. After I heard Weezer's version of Velouria I had to hear the Pixies version. And the rest is history)
2) Beatles - White Album (I'm really into bizarre music sometimes. And this album satifies that side of me. Along with sweet songs like "I Will")
3) Frank Black - Show Me Your Tears (Frank finally hit me with emotions. Songs like Coastline and My favorite kiss, this became a fast favorite)
4) Pink Floyd - Darkside of the Moon (This is the reason I want to make Concept Albums)
5) Weezer - Weezer *Blue Album* (If it wasn't for them, I would have never found out about the Pixies. They opened my mind and my ears to music I would've skipped thru on my own. I owe Weezer a lot)
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. |

in the order of the albums that i listened to
Iggy Pop/The Idiot (It is what got me into rock music. It's so cool...both gloomy and passionate. I discovered there was a cool rock not for children but for grown-ups.)
Pixies/Bossanova (How often I have listened to it! At The Happening I reach the climax.)
Pere Ubu/The Moderan Dance (What a eccentric album it is! Violent, crazy and beautiful.)
FB&TC/Black Letter Days (I love to hear it at night. It is suitable music to listen to in deep dark of night.)
David Thomas and & Two Pale Boys/Surf's Up! (Listening to this, an endless desert comes into my mind. I love this dismal landscape.)
I join The Broken English Club. ---It's educational. |
