My 1988 vinyl of Surfer Rosa (4AD/Rough Trade) says Gigantic was written by Mrs. John Murphy and Black Francis.
My 1992 CD of Surfer Rosa (4AD/Elektra) gives sole credit to Mrs. John Murphy.
A case of revisionist history? Or just a typo on the later release? Does anybody have the recent 4AD reissue, and how is the song credited on there? |

well, according to BMI (which makes it legit I think) it is Kimberly Deal and Charles Micheal Kittridge Thompson III

Did Frank write the music and Kim the words? I seem to recall Frank saying something about having come up with the chord progression, anyway.

Wow, I wasn't aware that on earlier versions it was credited to them both. I have the '92 Elektra pressing, and it says "All selections written by Black Francis EXCEPT "Gigantic", written by Mrs. John Murphy.". On "Death to The Pixies", it says " "Gigantic" by Black Francis and Kim Deal". So who knows. I read that Kim wrote the lyrics after seeing a movie where a white woman has an affair and falls in love with a younger black man. So she definitely wrote the words. As far as the music, who knows? It's quite possible Frank wrote it (he even plays the solo in the middle!!). But then again, Kim's bass is the main instrument in the song. So, maybe they collaborated...? But anyway, it's a great song, no matter who wrote it.

I think rockmusic84 means the break in the middle of the song with has a different chord progression

Could be played only with Kim's bass and vocals. Like a ballad or something.

it's a Kim/Frank song
apparently 'Levitate Me' was wrong for years, although that has since been corrected... |

i'm 99% sure there's a quote somewhere (at least one) in which frank talks about how he wrote the music, and possibly even the 'gigantic' bit (as in he had that part of the song done) and kim wrote the rest of the lyrics, the verse and bridge...
Is it like today? Oh, oh, oh-oh. Then there followed days with kings, empires and revolutions. blood just looks the same when you open the veins. sometimes it was faith, power or reason as the cornerstone. but the furrowed brow has never left his face. he said, how did it come to this?

I don't think the authors were credited - Frank's wife and Dave Lovering... they are now though. |

Frank Black was in the recording studio, banging out 10 songs a day, and when Levitate Me was being recorded he got strapped for lyrics and those two chipped in. |

On the Alec Eiffel French Pixies site, in the reviews section, in the 1997 Select review of the Death to the Pixies comp. is an added bit with Frank Black commenting on each song.
Here's the Gigantic bit bumblebeeboy2 might be referring to:
GIGANTIC - Pixies anthem from 'Surfer Rosa'. Lead vocal from bassist Kim Deal. "A good chord progression, very Lou-Reed influenced. I'd had the word 'gigantic' in my mind just because the chord progression seemed very big to me." |

The movie which inspired Kim to write the lyrics for Gigantic is called Crimes Of The Heart(1986).Starring Diane Keaton,Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek. |

Yeah, I always thought that, but I saw a video of Gigantic live, and Frank plays the solo, pretty cool.
