I was in San Francisco two weekends ago, and went on a little album shopping spree at the ever-wonderful AMOEBA RECORDS....

this is what I picked up:

Weird War (first album, forget the name)

Hovercraft (an EP, forget the name...really awesome stuff!)

Sebadoh - Bubble & Scrape

Bad Wizard - (forget the name...this is a local band from Jersey who play shows around here in DC. ballsy rawk stuff)

Yo La Tengo - The Heart Beats As One

there were more, but I forget them at the moment. I bought, like, 8 or 9 discs. God I love that place

Has anyone ever heard of Hovercraft? I don't even know if they're still together...it's an experimental-noise band, I guess the bassist chick is Eddie Vedder's girlfriend or something (insignificant fact, really.) They remind me of Sonic Youth at their noisiest...I don't know, this EP really rekindled my love of noise-rock. Makes me want to start recording some like-minded ideas I've had floating around in my head.

Another question for you all (I'm all over the place on this thread)...is anyone here a Royal Trux fan? They put out some awesome albums in their day ('Thank You', 'Cats & Dogs', 'Sweet Sixteen') and Neil Hagerty is actually on the Weird War album I picked up. If you dig RTX, I highly recommend checking out Weird War (also on Drag City Records)

yeah, I picked up Rainer Maria's "Long Knives Drawn" after hearing an apparently ass-kicking live version of their song 'Ears Ring' on 3wk Internet radio.

I felt dirty the moment I threw it on. Lame emo crap. Even the album version of Ears Ring is kind of lame.

An overhyped band that is really not that special at all....

Still at work then? Must be working hours Wednesday down your way at the moment. My working Wednesday is over already, just watched an episode of the Office and Six Feet Under and had a great pasta for dinner.

Oh dear, that doesn't help. Does it?

Tastes vary, as always...but I have to disagree on the "quiet is the new loud" stance.

Both overtly quiet/soft music and overtly loud/white-noise music are extreme, and may even trigger the very same transcendent emotions in the mind/heart of the listener...but one can never replace the other.

the other two albums I bought (now that I left work early and came home to look at 'em)

Spoon - Girls Can Tell

Sonic Youth - Dirty (reissue, double cd)

Great Unicorns album, I can't wait to see them next month in DC. I picked up the new Mission of Burma and the new mclusky single last week. I would have went to the record store today but I'm trying to save money.

Let's say that it's not about the noise etc... the fact is that there are too many layers on 99% of the music today. In France, we have a cake called mille-feuille, thousand leaves. Talented musicians don't need that much stuff : that's why I like FB and the Pixies, their music is about ideas, not a superposition of ready-made effects.

"Yo La Tengo - The Heart Beats As One" : I have that one of Yo La Tengo, as well as Painful (or Painless, I don't remember the title), and I really love their music. It's very urban...

An album that I bought not REALLY recently but in the last four or five months was some Sense Field album. I thought they had a good cover of Caribou on the Pixies tribute album, so I thought I'd check out their other music. But it sucks! It's just like that Jimmy Eat World crap. Lame emo shit. I like some of the older Jimmy Eat World, like the Clarity album had some good tracks, but now it's just boring emo shit.

David Bowie-Reality
James-Best Of
The Beatles-Yellow Submarine
Pretenders-Singles
XTC-singles

It takes me a lot longer to get CD's because since it's a used CD store I have to wait for someone to sell it.

Is that the newer version or older version of Yellow Submarine? You'll know if it's the old one cuz it has a bunch of orchestra/film score music on it.

I say, Amen brother Adnan, you speak wisely. However, that Dirty reissue is blinding.
The last CD I bought? erm... difficult to say, I've been living off freebies for a while (new Mclusky is on right now).
Maybe Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place.

My next purchases are: the Franz Ferdinand album, I've finally stopped disliking them just for the sake of it and actually realised that its pretty OK stuff; and the Who DVD, the Kids Are Alright.

That's a pretty cool trio of albums.

I've just bought the new Divine Comedy album. Not bad at all although not quite reaching the heights of some of Neil Hannon's earlier work. Also purchased a signed copy of The Martinis smitten ep from some bloke in the USA via ebay. I await with much anticipation for that one. Anyone heard it yet??

Broken Face, how is the Br. Danielson album? The last album I bought was Pet Sounds. I want to get the new Loretta Lynn and some Johnny Cash sometime soon. And I'm waiting eagerly for my live Pixies CD's to come in.

I've been in a CD-buying frenzy.

Mostly older stuff. Trying to play catch-up or make good on downloaded albums.

-

God Speed You Black Emperor - f#a# (Infinity)
Can - Tago Mago
David Bowie - Alladin Sane, Low, Heroes
Einsturzende Neubauten - Kollaps

-

Well, it's a frenzy for me.

Franz Ferdinand :

First I didn't want to like this new old Television-Talking Heads band. Then I bought the album, and liked it a lot. After listening it a couple of times, I am now pretty bored with it.

Great to see so many Lou/Velvets fans on here! SoundofAtaris, The "Fully Loaded" edition of Loaded is more than decent. The demos/outtakes/alternate versions are of very high quality, and could've been released on an album. There are some versions of songs that Lou would later record himself (Oh Gin (Which would become "Oh Jim"), Sattellite of Love, and Love Makes You Feel, among others). Great sleeve notes, too. And as usual, Rhino makes a killer package design!

Recent albums I've purchased:

C.D.'s:
The Martinis - Smitten
Paul McCartney - Flaming Pie
Badfinger - Head First

L.P.'s
Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation
Velvet Underground - Squeeze
