The electric guitar is unquestionably mankind's most important invention. The electric guitar is better than any ten other inventions. Hot and cold running water, refrigeration, the wheel, the jet engine--who the fuck cares. Take them all away but leave the electric guitar, and we will be better off than if it was the other way round. Fender, Paul, Rickenbacker--these are the real gods.

Come to Homer's BBBQ, where the extra 'B' stands for 'BYOBB'
What's that extra B for?
It's a typo.

I was serious; what DOES CVS stand for?
Obligatory randomness: it's white with a green stripe. |

I think CVS is the name of a big (corporate?) store that sells lots of stuff, but I don't know exactly what it stands for. |

My favorite artist is Van Gogh, hands down. Do you ever get right up next to his paintings and look at them as closely as you can without making the guy wearing the tie shuffle his feet and cough? The paint on some of those things is half an inch thick! Some of those other artists have like maybe 1/8 inch of paint on there. Not with Van Gogh. You really get your money's worth with him.

"Your luck has been completely changed today.
Learn Chinese: Ordinary, Ping-gan"
Today's random google for: ping-gan:

A week in a life less ordinary Posted: 9:50 PM (Manila Time) | Aug. 01, 2003 By Natalia Diaz Inquirer News Service
First diary
IN a recent attempt to clean up my pigsty of a room, I unearthed my very first diary, a pink, Little Twin Stars journal with scented pages.
There it all was -- the chronicles of my world as a 10-year-old. I had penned in childish script the TV shows I saw every morning and what I ate for breakfast, down to the jam I spread on my toast. I had written about the day I lost my slippers in a mud puddle. And then, somewhere in between those pastiches of mundane details, I had written about the first Edsa revolution.
Imagine the contrast: Kiki and Lala's cartoon-ish little faces scribbled over with words like "coup" and "revolution," and simple drawings of the tanks and soldiers I had seen up close for the first time in my life.
Now that I am writing on a bigger sheet of paper, for a readership of more than one, I find it amusing that not much has changed, not even the fact that I couldn't draw a decent stick figure if my life depended on it. I realize that I have witnessed a hero's assassination, taken to the streets in two revolutions that toppled corrupt leaders, held my breath during countless coup attempts and, just last week, chalked up another attempted mutiny to my list.
To think that I am only in my twenties!
It's all part of being born in a theater of the absurd, growing up in the Philippines. Having sat at the dinner table where my father hammered into our heads the importance of principles over power, and the unshakeable mantra: "Hindi na puwede ang puwede na." At that dinner table many years ago, I shuddered as my mother recounted her experience of hugging a ballot box as menacing goons brandished firearms in her face.
Last night I was once again immersed in fiery discussions about the travails of our republic, with my younger brother who is addicted to the opinion pages section of our daily newspaper. In essence, perhaps the one change I know is that now, I down hope savored with the last subo of rice with Coke Light, not Pop Cola.
Another thing that has hardly changed is the unrelenting Pinoy trait of finding humor amidst troublesome times. During Edsa Dos, I was immensely amused by the placards that the rallyists carried, especially one that read, "Erap Resign!" over which was scribbled a little note: "Hindi ako uuwi, Ma. Ikaw ang maghuhugas ng pinggan."
A friend once relayed another strange scene she encountered while marching across the flyover: a young vendor carrying a sign that read, "Keep Off the Grass," obviously plucked from a garden.
Last Sunday I witnessed the same brand of absurdity you can't help but laugh at, shown on the TV screen that I was glued to. There, an impassioned Trillanes was, ready to die for his beliefs, and behind him, a young soldier busily texting. There were the usual suspects, the usiseros blithely watching bombs being wired in front of the Intercon. Perhaps they were really looking forward to watching the latest "Terminator" sequel but got sidetracked by the rebellion right outside their favorite theaters.
Then there were scenes from the raid in Mandaluyong. As troops uncovered the ammunition and personal effects supposedly left behind by the renegades, two soldiers, having found the more red arm bands such as those worn by the pack in Oakwood, cheerily tried them on. Not to mention the text messages that poured in: "Free parking sa Glorietta! Hurry before it explodes!"
This strange brand of humor I have doubtless imbibed as a true-blooded constituent of our beloved "Banana Republic." Case in point: When I got a call the other day informing me that I had to cover the President's Sona, I thought I had to write a lifestyle feature about a sauna.
Yes, my fellow youngsters, such is the State of my ImagiNation: slightly distracted, escapist, a bit too used to a landscape where pleasurable affairs coexist all too closely with vexing affairs of the state.
If the only tool you have is an elbow macaroni, all your problems look like Schroedinger's cat. |
