I just recently got my hands on this gem. This sounds alot different than any other Modest Mouse CD - but I love it!

Incredible.

I've downloaded the album, I love the second track (first propper song after the intro). I've ordered my copy from Amazon so I'll soon know the title of that song. Great album.

When are people going to learn - MODEST MOUSE DOESN'T SOUND GENUINE OR AUTHENTIC!

Haha, my kid you. They're okay. Very hit or miss for me. I think Teeth Like Gods Shoeshine is an awesome song, and I like songs like Alone Down There, Tiny Cities Made of Ashes, Gravity Rides Everything and Heart Cooks Brain. But there's so much material that doesn't seem to amount to much for me. My friend told me the new album reminds him of Neutral Milk Hotel's "On Avery Island" like it's very raucous and lo-fi. Said he hasn't been able to listen to more than 4 tracks of it.

Who do they sound like?

Why is 'monosyllabic' such a long word?

Jane's Addiction meets the Pixies meets Pavement meets Built To Spill.
Convenient Parking from Lonesome Crowded West sounds like it could have been on Surfer Rosa.

i've always been somewhat anti-Modest Mouse . his voice kind of annoys me. their songs are too long and they try too hard to be musicians when they're not.. and they're too Pixies derivitive.. and, their following is annoying.

all those nasty things said, i actually like the new album.

I've always been a little tentative to check out Modest Mouse. I remember someone telling me that they sounded a lot like the Pixies, so that struck my interest, but when I listened to some of their mp3s, nothing really caught my attention. For some reason I always hear their name brought up in the same circles as bands like Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service. That sort of turned me off. I agree with what Floop said though, about their irritating following. If I have to hear one more kid in my school spouting about these guys, and their apparent "awesomeness", I think I'll puke.

I've very much gotten into this what's classified as "post rock" or "post punk." Death Cab, Franz Ferdinand, Clinic, Modest Mouse...I first started listening to Clinic, then Death Cab, and noticed they all are recommended with eachother (such as "See these artists if you like this artist"). I think this is soem of the best music in the past decade...melodic, violent, fun, and danceable. It's great stuff.

it seems like people have been using that term "post punk" for quite a while. the Pixies were considered "post punk." i don't know what it's supposed to mean other than something that sounds kind of like punk, but not really.

Deathcab i would classify as "post-ass"

I agree with pretty much everything floop has said in this thread. Viva la floop! I just can't see what's so amazing about this group, but it seems like they're going to be mtv2 stars very soon. Something about modest mouse just seems completely insincere to me, but I can't put my finger on it, and it's not like I know a lot about their material either.

one of the best bands in current musical history.
they don't have a distinct sound and are constantly evolving as opposed to the stagnant musical scene that most people try to "create" nowdays.
i saw them live afew months ago in calgary and was honestly going to the show expecting to be let down. the moon and antartica was one of my favorite albums of all time immediately, and i thought it would be hard to reproduce some of that albums defined to refined quality.
they blew me away like a rats from a ship.
long live the mouse.

Modest Mouse gives a shout out, (albeit a brief one), to the Pixies in this "interview"...

What would be the best album to get as starter. At the moment its a toss up between The Moon & Antarctica and the crowded west. Any help. I've heard jesus was an only child and i came as a rat, I really like those two.

i personally would go for moon and antartica, or alternatively wait a few weeks (??) until good news is released, and start there. it's my fave by them so far.

Ok, I won £300 at the casino a couple of weeks back and Im normally poor so I've taken the opportunity to pick up some albums I've so far been to poor to pick up.

The Fall - Rough Trade £5 BARGAIN!
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights £8

I now want a modest mouse album and les savy fav - inches. Maybe a couple more but I dunno what.

I've not heard much of this new album, but I don't think it'll top 'Building Nothing Out of Something' for me.

been thinking about this, and can't see how they'd be classed together. not a big fan of death cab, in fact hate them. clinic aren't bad, franz ferdinand... well less said the better. but i really do think modest mouse blow them all away and their have such variety, i can't see them in that genre really... i just stick to good old alt.american.indie...

i quite honestly believe, as an album, it's their best, easily. of course it doesn't have 3rd planet, trailer trash and so on... but has some classic songs itself and seems stronger than the other modest mouse albums i've heard/got... was listening to dance hall on the bus on the way home, always makes me want to get up and start doing a crazy hyper dance with my elbows flying in the air...

isaac brock has turned into a muppet monster. it's fantastic. songs like 'dance hall' and 'this devil's workday' are fantastic for the vocals alone. for someone to go on tape sounding like that... it's admirable. and to think, THIS is the album that gets them radio play? my guess is a lot of Abercrombie chaps will be purchasing this, and in a few months it'll be swamping used cd stores. just like 'last splash.' brothas can't handle this shit, yo.

there are only two bands whose albums i have purchased without having heard any of their music: wilco- "yankee hotel foxtrot", and modest mouse- "the moon and antarctica". i regret nothing.

Hmmm. I know alot of people really like Modest Mouse on this forum, my brother really loves them and Built to Spill. He's a hardcore BMX'er and thats what I've always associated them with. I've never really liked their sound, for me it's too American, as in, their are 20 other bands who sound like that ( maybe they created that sound, but I find it a bit boring ) I'd rather listen to Fugazi and Husker Du. I think it's the five year generation gap?

I downloaded the two songs you state above. Dance Hall is fucking great, Im gonna buy this album. Anyway does no one else see the huge similarity in his voice on dance hall to the singer of the dead kennedys? Someones going to tell me its the same guy now aren't they?

I had never heard them until about a week ago. I ordered "Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks" from BMG. Plus borrowed "Good News..." from my sister. They're not too bad. I definitely need to give them more listens. I remember my cousin had one of their albums on vinyl back in 1996. It seems to me that the LP itself was red. That's kind of cool.
