Oh man... Did this show ever fucking ROCK!!! It was amazing how much more energy there was tonight!!
First off, that set list is pretty much correct, except they threw in "Something Against You" after "Isla de Encanta". It wasn't on the list... BF just started playing it. And it rocked.
Re: La La Love You... They came out and started playing it, but David screwed it up. Kim tried to cover it, but BF called it off and they stopped. Frank said, "We haven't had to abort a song yet on this tour have we?"
Kim: No...
Frank: Can we go off stage and come back out?
So they left the stage for a minute and came back out. Kim picks up her guitar and says "Hi! We're the Pixies!". Frank says, "Golly it's been a long time!", and then they play it again.
The other big wish-you-were-there moment was they played this sort of never ending version of Gigantic. They basically just dragged out the end for a long ass time. I think on the disc the whole song is over five minutes. Kim was laughing her ass off and yelling "JUST END IT!!"
Overall, this show rocked my freakin' socks off. They seemed to be in better spirits tonight and the crowd was really alive. People were just screaming their guts out.
Can't wait to see the roof come off the Commodore tomorrow night!

What an excellent show!! Firstly I have to say the Commodore is an amazing venue.. I thought there was quite a bit of room even considering the show was sold out...and considering they sold another 200 at the show for those fans who missed out on tix the 1st time. I have to say..being my first time in Vancouver, I haven't been approached nearly as often in such a short span of time for spare change, a cigarette, or whatever...I mean, ya Ok..everyone says hello to you in Vancouver, and people are really friendly, but geezuz....i've never had someone ask for my cigarette butt before I've even finished smoking it!!!! ok..I have another day in this town..hopefully I can meet some more fans tonight on Friday night - and just for the record, the Cambie sucked ass...it closed early, and there were about fifty thousand sketchbags hangin around the front door.. I was fortunate enough to run into some fellow pixies fans from Chicago with whom I went to another bar around the corner (calle the lighthouse or something like that.).. Definitely an awesome show though I still think the saskatoon show was just a tad better..not to downplay the performace..but the crowd was a bit more energetic in SK. So I wait for the Chicago and Toronto shows!

Okay, I've got to say this show was phenomenal. AudioDr & company, I was at the cambie at 5pm, I think I missed you and the rest of the Pixies group (sorry about that). The setlist just flowed amazingly, and the venue was filled with such an energy that I lost myself in the concert. I was right at the front of the stage and held my ground pretty well. This being said, I have some good photos that I will post as soon as I have them developed. The people next to me were definitely into the set. It was cool to be pushed up against the barriers and just forced to move with the motion of the crowd. Just so Spiral~Daisy and Ipots know, I had nothing to drink all night and I had nothing but a perfect memory of the concert. The line for the DiscLive disc was fairly organized and quick. All in all, this concert was very well organized and proved to be a very effective effort. The opening act (Black Mountain) was probably fives times better than any of the other opening acts (according to personal opinion). I've really been praying for the band to play "I've Been Tired" but they pretty much stuck to the normal set list (which is still okay, I'm still glad to see the Pixies in any situation). Maybe they'll be able to incorporate it into their act when Toronto comes by. Final words, I had a great time, and I think it is a safe assumption to say that the rest of the audience had a great time too. |

Thanks xinit. Just to summarize the setlist for Gavin (BTW, Gavin, what do you think about doing that list in order of how many times the song has been played instead of alphabeticaly so we can see what the 'rare' songs are on this tour easier?):

Thanks, Dean and all. As for listing the songs by # of times played instead of alphabetically.. well that'd be a bit more of a pain for me, but if that's what people want. Can we get some "yays" or "nays" to see what the consensus is? I think alphabetical is nice because if you're looking for a specific song you can find it faster. -Gavin |

Hey,
I don't think its been mentioned yet, but the whole show was videotaped!! One guy with a professional camera wandering around the stage.
The energy was incredible last night. Lots of smiles from the band throuhout the whole show. If the video camera is there again tonight I'm expecting some variety in the setlist.
There was a fair bit of moshing up front, but you can stand 10 feet from the barrier and still comfortably watch the show.
Cheers, Jason :)

Oops... it didn't save my comments when it redirected me to login.... To sum up...
A) Impressed with disclive.com quality and speed to release. B) Wish there had been a tracklisting included, or submission to freedb.org so we could look it up automatically. C) Two nights in the same venue == good way to cut together a DVD product.

Can someone post set times if they remember them? I'm hoping for a ballpark of when the openers started and what time the pixies hit the stage at the Commodore so as to better plan my night tonight...

Opening act by the name of (mumble mumble) started nearly right at 9:00pm and was off stage right around 9:30pm. I don't recall the exact time that the Pixies hit stage, but believe it wasn't more than 30 minutes later; enough time to finish half a beer, hit the bathrooms and head to the dancefloor. |

Great show, great town, I couldnt be happier with my decision to make this trip from Tx. Cant wait for the next show.
This is a completely different experience from seeing them half a dozen times or so pre-breakup. Tons of banter and just good old fun. Never saw 1/10th of the smiles and comradere in the old days.
They may have initiated this for the money, but, unless they are all a bunch of actors they seem to be having the time of their lives up there. Very different from the old days (and the old days were great btw). |

UNBELIEVABLE! Last night was awesome, high energy crowd, smiles from the band, that false start was classic! I'm glad I got this one on DiscLive, what a treat.
Highlights for me were definitely La La Love You, Gigantic and Into the White.
I also heard that people who lined up for will call without tickets were able to purchase tix before the show at the door! I met a friend who said they let him in after four songs, but he still had to pay full price, the venue was probably doing a head count or something. I heard scalpers were unloading for $50 bucks! love it!
Great meeting ya Pica!
Have fun everybody who is going tonight!

MAN CAN FRANK EVER SCREAM!!
Like the other comments, the show was amazing. All in all a fantastic day. Flight came in on time and was able to make it to the cambie for a couple of beers. Nice atmosphere- they had some pixies tunes cranked and met some cool people. My wife and I had a great time. Very impressed with the Commodore. Great venue to see a great band. The sound was great and I thought the sound level was perfect- my ears weren't bleeding this morning! Highlights- la la love you, velouria, gigantic, wave of mutilation uk surf. Off to check out the city and then one more show tonight!

Hey audio, I suppose no one mentioned that, but the block the commodore is on is "the worst" place for panhandlers, in fact the gov't was gonna step in and try to do something about it, i don't know what ever came of that, but even I was annoyed last night, it seems to be getting worse. You went to the Lamplighter(how many teeth did your server have?)Go to the Cambie before the show, maybe the Royal or the Cellar after (both on Granville). The Royal has ModClub on Fridays, should be very cool music playing tonight, the DJ will no doubt throw out a couple Pixies tunes.

Just want to echo most of the sentiments above - last night's show was superlative. I agree with the notion that whatever might have precipitated this tour, they seem happier together than they did in the old days. I saw them every time they were in the Pacific NW back in phase one, and all were great shows - some definitely intense; maybe a bit of that edge was gone last night, but they also seemed more comfortable with themselves and with each other, so there is a trade, and certainly not a bad one. Every song rocked, Frank sounded amazing (I was a little nervous about reports from earlier in this tour that he didn't have "the scream" back yet, but he did not disappoint), Kim looked like 12 years of heavy, heavy drinking but she was nailing the harmonies and smiled through most of the show, and that bass...when "Into the White" kicked in I thought the roof was going to come down. Any concerns anyone might have had about them still being able to bring the rock were completely dispelled last night.
I got to the venue early and managed to hear part of the soundcheck from outside, "Velouria" and "Planet of Sound" - I was a bit disappointed not to hear the latter at the show proper, but hearing it from the street outside was pretty great.
Pre-show we went to the Lennox Pub, just a few storefronts down from the Commodore, and had a great dinner and some good beer - and spending US dollars made dinner pretty cheap (as it did beers inside the Commodore). We also managed to have one more pre-show drink at a bar a few blocks away with the very, very kind forum member who made it possible for me to see this show in the first place, and who I must thank here publicly not only for the tickets, but also for letting us hang out with him and his crew, which made for a pretty kick-a$$ night.
All in all, one of the best nights in recent memory, and unlike so many other hastily-assembled "We're gettin' the band back together!" cash-ins, this only added to the Pixies' legacy.

We went up for the show yesterday from Seattle. Vancouver is a beautiful city and the Commodore is a really comfortable place to see a show. They don't overfill the venue. The neighborhood where the Comm. is has quite a lot of panhandling and drug sellers, but there is an unusually diverse mix of people walking around even late at night, and it doesn't seem unsafe. We stopped by about noon and quite a few people were out front waiting for tickets, I guess. We had lunch at an Indian place around the corner from the Comm. at about 3, and watched as the tour bus and disclive truck pulled in to the back of the club! We walked to an underground mall to get some coffee and LaLaLoveYou was playing in the mall! People lined up early to get in but there didn't seem to be much point. Some people were still looking for tickets then. There's lots of room in the Commodore and the opening band was very pro. The Pixies tour merchandise is very cool. The Pixies came on sometime soon after 10. The false start on La La was very dramatic and fun. I was screaming like a maniac as I'm sure most everyone else was. All the band sang parts on La La, Joey sharing a mic with Frank. This show was insanely good. The best either myself or my husband have ever been to. The band was having a great time, there was banter and theatrics. There was a ton of fog from fog machines (so that Dave disappeared!), and there were lots of lighting effects. Joey played guitar with the drumstick and a bottle and played it behind his back and swung it around at times. His stage demeanor is both amusing and entertaining. Frank, with the grunge shirt again, had a pleased and happy look on his face all night and delivered 100% on all the songs. They seemed happy to be there. Other highlights: Broken Face, perfect song for a frenzy on a sprung dance floor, awesome. Cactus, Hey and Velouria also great. The crowd holding up the number of fingers on Monkey... five six seven. A couple of the songs were the best versions I've ever heard. I BLEED was incredible with Kim's thunderous bass line, shaking the house, unbelievable - like cruising in a low-rider. A word about Kim, she's doing great. Joey and Frank were teasing her during way drawn out versions of Gigantic and the White. Not a flaw in Gigantic. This band is in charge, and any change they made in a song was like a game for them. Kim's high cheekbones make it look like she's smiling when she looks down at her guitar, which she often does. She wasn't drinking during the show, and put in her cute little 'Thanks!' at the end of some songs, as she is known to do. She would look up and smile at the crowd quite often. The crowd had to work to get them back for the encore with In Heaven (Kim sang) going without seams into UK Wave. Folks tried to start a thing with holding up your lighter during Where is My Mind. Into White exited in HUGE noise, so that you and the building were trembling along with it. The club's blinds automatically lifted after the first encore, the lights came up and the stereo came on. Guys rushed out to take down the equipment, so there was no chance of a 2nd encore. Frank and Joey had been wiping there faces and it was hot in there by the end of the show, I think it was time to quit. We were out of there at 11:50. The perfect quality of their performance makes it so it doesn't matter which of their songs they play (although I was hoping for Levitate or Been Tired!). If you are there, you will have a fantastic time. If you love the Pixies, this was the show of a lifetime for you. Well worth travelling and every cent. Thanks Pixies for a great show!

This show was INCREDIBLE!!!! ABSOLUTELY!!!
I was at Victoria the night before. Some people complained about that show. I, at the time, thought it was awesome. But this show was so much more! More and just different too.
First, the Commodore is such a great venue! I've been in a lot of venues and it is one of the best, if not the best IMO.
Second, the crowd, as a whole, was just so thrilled to be seeing the Pixies. In Victoria there was an aggressive bent to the crowd, as if the point was all about getting to the front, not about just being there seeing the Pixies. The crowd at the Commodore I think was just awed they were actually in the door, awed the Pixies were there, awed the Pixies were playing in front of them. There was a lot of love in the room!
Thirdly, the Pixies were much more relaxed and enjoying themselves than the night before. Their performance was more earnest, especially FB. He was putting so much more into the songs. I was actually amazed at it. I've never seen him play with the Pixies and be that way. I saw him play at a record store once, just himself, and it was amazing how much he put into performing the songs. He was like that at this show!! Joey was having lots of fun being showy--he caught the drumstick tonight! Kim was her usual fun self, but really soaking up the crowd response. At the end of the show where they do their thing of just standing on the stage letting people scream over them, I thought Kim looked actually touched by it. She stood very still at one point, intently peering out at the crowd with this look on her face that made me think, if she was a different person, she'd tear up. Then she immediately tried to shake hands, getting the people she could reach. I think she would've stayed out there all night and shake hands (as I've seen her nearly do at a Breeders show), but the rest of the band was waiting for her, so she reluctantly left.
Dave's big moment was fucking up La La Love You at the beginning. The moment was so GREAT!! When they left the stage to start over the crowd went about twice as nuts as they'd been when they first came out, even clapping in time for a moment like you do for an encore. The screams were deafening when they re-appeared. Kim, while picking up her bass, was yelling to FB, "Are we doing the same song? Are we doing La La?" FB says, "Yes!" in this "of course!" tone with a look to match. So great!
I think the order of the setlist was excellent. It seemed like a much better, smoother transitioning, more interesting order of songs than the night before. I was disappointed that they did basically the same encore though. I think that encore takes some energy out of the crowd. They did take an inordinately long amount of time to get back out. Part of that was because Kim had to have a smoke. I could see her back stage from where I was at.
Gigantic was AMAZING!!!! FUCKING AMAZING!!!! When they just kept playing and playing, the crowd just got louder and louder with screaming, and some people picked up a "Go, go, go, go" chant for a bit to encourage them on. I'm disappointed you can't hear it on the cd.
About the film crew: there were two guys filming. One that stayed down front the whole show, where the security guys are, and another that roamed. I don't remember in what song it was, but the roaming guy came out to the front of the stage on Kim's side and was filming, I think even blocking Kim at one point. FB kept looking over at him like he was annoyed this guy was up there blocking everyone's view. When the song was over Kim looked right at the guy and said, "GO AWAY!" and motioned to the back of the stage.
I don't know, there was just some magic in the air that, after seeing this show, I realized wasn't there in Victoria. But Victoria is memorable to me for the frantic, almost out of control frenzy the crowd up front was in. That is one type of experience I'm glad I had on this tour. It was loads of fun. This Vancouver show represents another kind of experience at a show. I guess if I had to describe it, I'd say it was all about utter joy. It was exactly the kind of show I thought might happen at the Commodore, and why I made certain I got tickets to at least one of the shows there. I don't expect to see a show like that again from them and I still have three shows to go. I can only ask for one small thing more from them now: play Planet of Sound at a show I'm going to! |

Tonight's show was amazing.I wasn't planning on going to tonight's show, but after last night,I wouldn't have missed it for the world. They talked alot more than they did last night.Frank gave the band the thumbs up and hi fived them all.You could tell they are still having a wicked time.I cannot remember the setlist right now, but I will post it later if it's not already posted. The show was soooo good, but I think they crowd from yesterday was a little more hyped up.I met David before the set.He was standing at the bar having a drink.I felt like a nerd but I had to say hi to him.He was really nice.We talked for a little bit,and then I left.I didn't wan't to bug him.He told me thanks for comming to the show.About twenty five minutes later the pixies went on.I think it was somewhere around 11:30.They played a really good set.The songs were different from yesterday.I also got Kim's pick.I saw one of the stang and asked the security guard if I could have it and he grabbed it for me.I feel very lucky.I love Kim.She is the one who inspired me to start playing music. It it my lucky pick!!!After the show I grabbed my cd ( I had someone waiting in line for me), and headed to the back door.I was only standing there for like five minutes when Kim and Frank came out. There were about ten or so people waiting and they all rushed up to them and started asking them for their autograph.I figured, what the hell and asked Kim.She signed my hat and shirt.I was able to get Franks auto but I didn't talk to him as long as I talked to Kim.I told her that they were making a lot of peoples dreams come ture and she said thanks.I can't remember what else was said right now.I am truly lucky.I just can't believe it.I'll post some more info later.C'ya |
