i doubt they care.
i went there back in like 95. i'm told that it's been re-done since then (it was pretty shitty the way i remember. not that that's a bad thing. but very High School Gym-esque)..
i do remember it being an all ages venue and them not serving alcohol. does anyone know if that's still the case? |

They don't serve booze, but you are allowed to bring in alcohol from the bar across the street. I guess they let you just go in and out as you please. However, I doubt they'll let you do that for the pre-show. |

I guess I'm gonna have to drive down to Pomona after work and beg for a ticket from passerby.
Hey, do you guys think it would be more painful to go and not get in, or to not go? That's what I have to wrestle with today. |

there are always tickets. if you're willing to shell out. bring some cash and hope for the best.
and i concur with BLT, Taper is the shit. i apologize for ever threatening you.. you have to understand, some of us are still sensitive about that whole April Fool's "joke"..
if i see you at the show i'll happily buy you a coke (since it's a non-drinking venue)..
see you guys there!!!!! |

are there just not that many people on this list going to this? i would think there'd be more discussion on the eve of, potentially, the best Pixies gig of this whole tour.
the venue is 800 people. |

I'm slightly under 6'5", brown hair, balding in front, round eyeglasses. Today I'm wearing a cream-colored t-shirt and I'll probably be in my black denim jacket. Turn-ons: honesty, walks on the beach at dusk, a romantic evening in front of the fire...

I really can't decide whether it would be more painful to stay home and miss it, or to go to Pomona and be unable to get a ticket. I really don't have huge $$$ to spend - actual scalpers, if any, would most likely want over $200 for them, I'm guessing; I really only have about $80-$100 to spend. I'd essentially be relying on some kind concertgoer who has an extra that they're willing to sell for not-that-much-over-face-value. |

I know nothing about this venue, but "sold out" doesn't necessarily mean they won't sell tickets at the door if you show up early enough. That happened at both Vancouver shows, and those tickets had been highly sought after (going for $150+ a piece on eBay). |

I made it. I got there around 5:15, parked right in front of the venue, asked everybody there for tix, no luck. Checked box office - they had just sold the last one to the guy ahead of me. Got out my sign and waited in line. No luck. Talked to a few people. Checked the box office again, nothing. Then, after about a half hour on line, The box office guy motioned me in. I got a ticket at face value. Thank you, marbleslinger, as your reassurance was just the encouragment I needed.
So, the show. Came out with Bone Machine; Frank looking scary and cool as fuck in his eyeliner. U-Mass, Cactus, all the fast ones like Isla, Something Against, Broken, etc. It was a bit of a blur. I've been downloading and listening to every one of the Disclive recordings I can get my hands on, about 5 so far(I suppose I really should buy one of the still available ones), but nothing could of prepared me for the actual live sound - it was fucking HUGE. Just a massive roar of guitars. On some level I didn't really expect them to match the proficiency and tightness of the Catholics, but fuck it - they were better. It was a great set. Vamos - the fucking drum stick toss - amazing! They closed with In Heaven/Where is My Mind?, and left. Despite massive audience appreciation, they didn't do an encore, which admittedly was a bit of a punch in the gut, and which I'm still feeling kind of sour about. This has to have been the shortest set I've heard of them doing this tour - I'd be surprised if it was even 70 minutes. Loads of stuff I didn't get to hear that I was dying to; specifically, Winterlong, Into the White, La La Love You. It's hard to muster any genuine negativity, especially since I believe they'll be annoncing their 4-night LA stand for September any day now, god willing, but for $35 I did feel a little gypped. I don't know if there was any particular reason or cause for the brevity of the show, but my best guess would be that they probably have an early day tomorrow, and wanna be ready for the big debut. Another thing was, I kept hearing rumours that another band, possibly the Cure, would be following the Pixies, but that seems beyond unlikely. The early end made me think it might be true, but there was no other gear visible and they certainly didn't announce anything to that effect. Plus, half the audience was outside, if not gone, within about 10 minutes of them starting to break down the Pixies gear in earnest and it was obvious they were NOT coming back, so the Cure ain't playing to nobody if they are there.
Despite the mild disappointment, seeing the show felt like a massive triumph for me as a fan. I've been in a near constant state of low-grade anxiety ever since this reunion stuff started rolling. I've been going to Frank Black shows for 7 years*, and I deeply resented being shut out of any meaningful at least initial Pixies experience; since I assumed from the start that there's no possible way any kind of Coachella experience could be "meaningful". So, through sheer pluck, determination, and force of will, I got to see them from 6 feet away, at a reasonable price, at a "SECRET" show which only my eminence as a fan put me in a position to know about in the first place. No more sour grapes for me!
*edit: sorry, that's 13 shows, 7 years |

that show smoked, they didnt do the encore because they are getting ready for tommorrow night and trying to see just how to do the 60 minute no encore thing..But this was much better and tighter than davis
also ,a friend who was at vancouver and tonight said the same cameramen were rolling. There was one guy filming the entire show onstage, so they are probably working on some kind of documentary of the reunion tour

Well I can talk about it now!!!
Radiohead WAS Scheduled to perform a set, but since Thom Yorke's voice was on the mend, they thought it best to give him the day off to better prepare for their Cocachella performance.

The NME have a report on the gig here:
http://www.nme.com/news/108375.htm
"PIXIES PLAY SECRET WARM-UP SHOW
PIXIES performed a secret pre-COACHELLA gig outside LOS ANGELES last night (April 30).
Moving Units were billed alongside 全pecial Guests at the Pomona Glass House and shortly after 9.30pm, the guests were revealed as Frank Black and company performed an hour long set to a crowd that included Jack Black, Juliette Lewis and Har Mar Superstar.
The group opened with 達one Machine and played over a dozen songs including 奪ebaser and 竪igantic, which Black stopped mid-song. "I get nervous," he said to bassist Kim Deal on stage. "It痴 my guitar solo in the Pixies." |

After Moving Units left the stage, the Pixies' road crue got to work preparing the instruments. The guy in charge of Kim's P-bass tuned it and got the knobs adjusted correctly, then gently placed it on the stand. A few minutes later, he repeated the process. And again. Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" played while he walked around doing other things. Then he picked up the bass and checked it again. He must have examined that bass at least a dozen times. The thought passed through my mind that this guy's boss was around and he was trying to look busy. "Zen Arcade" droned on and on. I was thinking that, even though I own that album, it will by okay if I never listen to it again.
Finally the band came out. What a surreal experience. It was so strange to stand there and see Kim and Frank in front of me, both on stage at the same time. There was no set list, of course. "Bone Machine" was first up. Amazing song. After that I can't remember the order of the songs (I'm bad at that, just like I don't remember jokes). They did most of the early thrashers and sounded great. I think U-Mass was the only post-Doolittle track, which didn't really bother me. Count me as one who is happy they didn't do "Here Comes Your Man" or "La la Love You". Considering it was a relatively short set, the song selection was perfect.
A list of my personal highlights: -the bridge in "Dead" -the "Number 13" outro -Frank pressing his nose up against the mic -the bridge to "I Bleed" -"Broken Face" (the whole incredible song) -"Tame"
Some thoughts...
Standing about 15 feet in front of Kim, I was close enough to see a drop of sweat collecting on the end of her nose during the wonderful long outro to "Number 13". I waited to see if it would drop by the end of the song, but it didn't. The she and Frank both towelled off.
There was one track (I think it was the surf version of "Wave of Mutilation") where something with the bass seemed dreadfully wrong. I couldn't quite pin it down, though. It couldn't have been out of tune because it was okay on the songs before and after.
I was also a little miffed about getting stiffed for the encore, but considering this was a "secret" show and they've got a big day ahead of them in the desert heat, I don't blame them. |

the bridge in "Dead"
Yeah, it's funny, as they were playing that, I was struck with the thought "that's like their version of the bridge to "Here Today" off "Pet Sounds". I dunno why, but if I ever get the chance to speak to Charles, I'll tell him that, I'll bet he'd get a kick out of it.
Did anybody else notice the "Joe and Kim hop" during Broken Face? I noticed it but it was so quick and subtle (and they didn't repeat it in the song), I wasn't sure if I was imagining things. Then I read Kelley Deal's post about the first show, and she mentioned it, so I know it was a real planned bit of choreography. Perfectly executed, by all appearances. And the drumstick toss - people have referred to it before, but I always assumed that Dave tossed Joey a drumstick before the song, not during. Those Pixies, man, they don't do anything halfway.
I really liked the lighting at this show. All white, almost no colored lights. All the smoke and insanely bright, white light during "Bone Machine" was just overwhelming. |

I saw it but when they didn't repeat I thought it was coincidental. Now I think it was part of their master plan.
I also thought the lighting was great. |
