Hypothetical question of the day:

If you were to move to another country, which would you choose and why?

I would probably choose either:

1. France - more benign climate, friendly people (although I would want to be fluent in French to be able to properly integrate), a traditional community spirit still alive in towns and villages, beautiful landscape, much lower house prices, great cuisine, great transport links

2. New Zealand - never been but I imagine the way of life is very pleasant. Maybe benji could comment. From what I have seen and read the climate is fine, the scenery stunning, crime rate is very low, a good standard of living, very cheap housing (relative to the UK), gentle pace of life

I have no intention of emigrating but lots of people do and I am always intrigued as to the reasons why. What do you think fb peeps?

You're welcome, barney.

"great transport links": when there's no strike that's ok.
I fly from Paris to Toulouse every week since last december, and almost every week there's a different category of workers on strike.

I want to live in Los Angeles...

I'm more interested in travelling than emigrate in another country. Although, living on an pacific Island or the west coast of south america looks great but do they have high speed internet?

tricky one... as i really, really love living where i do in manchester... within the uk, the only place i'd move to is probably oxford, it's the only place i've been to where i've really fancied staying... abroad? i'm not sure, no where grabs me, maybe somewhere in the US for a little while? i liked malta when i was there... but not much to do!

can i stay here please?

I have moved over 15 times in my life - so there is something appealing about staying put, and everyone I love (well, most everyone) lives about 10 minutes from me right now - which is also really nice. But still, the wonderlust is great!

I would like to live in:

1. London - I just love the city, the cultural stuff happening, the LIFE there.
2. Capri, Italy - it's just SOOOOO beautiful, and I love the relaxed way Italy has.
3. Siena, Italy - a very different vibe from Capri but also just so fucking GORGEOUS.

New York. I'd love to live there for a year or two. Catch up on all the classic films I've missed, see as much live music as possible and spend time in book-shops and museums. The Manhattan skyline is something I'd love to see everyday.

Dublin. I nearly moved there but then a relationship did not work out so I'm still curious what it would have been like.

Cape Town. The most naturally beautiful place I've ever seen, just a shame about the crime and the huge chasm between the rich and the poor.

Putting to one side family and job commitments I would love to live in the Loch Lomond area of Scotland or on the North Yorshire coast near Whitby - both beautiful awe inspiring localities

I always found London to be super friendly and lovely. But people say that about Boston too, and I have never found it to be true. Another perception thing, I guess?

Well I wouldn't live there - not even if someone offered to double my salary. I know quite a few who have moved out over the last few years, particularly those with young children and others who had 'tired' of the high intensity way of life. Saying that I really enjoy visiting occasionally. I think we'll take a trip on the train with the kids in the summer.

it always seems so busy, everyone in a rush, it's packed everywhere... no one seems happy... the tube, well, less said about that the better... horrid thing, why does no one ever smile on the tube? i realise it's like hell on earth in there, but wouldn't smiling at least cheer people up! and i normally get abuse from homeless people or kids whenever i go to london...

Well, I'd say the Oregon Coast (which I know quite well) or New Zealand (which I don't know at all).

If I wasn't French I think I'd say France. It's certainly not Heaven but it's a nice place to live, in many respects. Ask Frank if you don't believe me...

Well, I live in London, and I'm dead happy here. You'd find it hard to believe how much of a sense of community you get in the various areas. If you keep your wits about you, you'd have no reason not to love living here I think. Maybe I'm a city boy at heart (even though i was countryside born and raised).

As for other places, hmm. I liked Paris a lot, and I've always fancied the Carribbean way of life. I have friends in Trinidad and Tobago, and it sounds wonderful. Also, I fell in love with the West Coast of Scotland around Oban and Fort William when I visited, although that may have been due to some gorgeous (and probably a little unusual) hot weather. Tis beautiful though.

The only place I've properly been tempted to move to, though, is St Ives in Cornwall. For a start, its a bustling and cool little town, with plenty going on, yet within a few minutes you can be on awesome beaches, bleak moorland or rugged coastline. It just seems like it'd be a properly cool place to live.

Actually yeah, I reckon I could settle right into Italian life. I love Italian food for a start, and the whole process of taking time to eat it and socialise is wonderful. I've never been, which is such a shame, but it looks fantastic. I know people in Naples, so one day maybe...

Fun fact of the day: the odds of a cataclysmic eruption of Vesuvius within the next ten years is 6/4. Scary, non?

I'll say England, because that seems where I'll be living soon enough anyway! The odd thing is, even before I met Mel, I decided that at some point in my life I wanted to spend time in England...London specifically, mostly cause I don't know anywhere else in England. Now it seems that dream will become a reality.

Much as I love the place, there's loads of cool places you should visit while you're over. Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Lake District are all gorgeous for a start, and there's loads of others to choose from.

Do you have to get citizenship to live there? Are you getting married? I am not trying to pry (i.e., feel free to ignore me) - I am just curious how the Visa stuff works if you move over there.

I dont know where I would live.
You know when youre younger, and you hate the country you live in and think that if you move away to another country, it will be great there?
Yeah, well I sorta woke up from that, and thought, fuck, i dont wanna have to pay to go and see my doctor, or get charged through the nose for a little op here and there. lol. I dont know. I like England, I love England. Yeah, its not perfect, but where is? No metter twhat we do a good job genereally, yeah theres things to complain about -= but not as much as some.

I was bought up in and on the outskirts of london.
I think theres a lot of beauty in london, but I do agree, that everyone is miserable there, because of the commuters and stuff. But its just more about where you go.
Ive never lived any where as good as Brighton. IT has the beauty (but better) and cosmopolitan and cultural stuiff here , but at the same time everyone here is so nice, the atmosphere is brilliant.

I dont know where else id live. I
I love the look of italy, it looks amazing, but i couldnt deal with the Heat.
Paris is incredible - and id like to explore france a little more.
Sweeden if a war breaks out.
New York / Boston If I was rich, and could afford it. heh.

But no, im not intending on moving anywhere. Not even to wales/scotland/N.Ire. I love my country!

Ramona, no, thats fine. I dont really get the whole visa situation, basically its very confusing.
I think its you can get a visa for 6 months, erm, but theres a bunch of other types of visa such as student etc.
Im not sure what our exact plans are yet, were trying to not think that far ahead, and concentrate on this summer, and see how things go...but its unlikely that that will be the end of it. Weve already decided im going there for christmas/jimsbday/new years...lol.

But yeah, its Jim that been looking at all that stuff, so I couldnt really tell you.
I thinkyou can get a spouse visa (if we were married) but Id have to prove I can support both of us, and that we would live together, and Jim wouldnt be able to work for 6 months, which sucks. so yeah.

No plans as such yet.

Yeah, i think any where is probably cheaper than the south of the UK right now.

By afford to live there I meant about the whole health thing, and I dont know, you guys seem to get charged for everything, and youre earning less.

I know it all balances out somewhere along the lines, but I much prefer our way of being ripped off by the governament than yours. lol.
