I'm in a topic posting mood today ('favourite tree species' and 'what's the temperature where you live' to come later).
Anyway UK house price inflation continues to rise upwards a ridiculous rate. Our previous house in Lincoln is now worth about 4 times what we paid for it in 1997. And Lincolnshire remains a cheaper part of the UK to buy houses. God knows what it's like in the South where a decent 4 bedroom terraced house can cost over £500,000.
Apparently the average salary of a first time house buyer versus average house price ranges between
7 x average annual salary in London
3.5 x average salary in Scotland
I think it's about 5 x where I live.
The mortgage lenders traditionally only lend up 3.5 x salary but I belive they are now stretching this restriction. I concede that I'm lucky - we bought our house before the prices started to hurtle upwards.
How does the UK compare to the rest of the world? I get the feeling that the UK is pretty damn expensive.

| I was looking at house/ tax evaluations here in Montreal for a project I did....the rise is ridiculous....a single family city house that was valued at 169,000 in 2001 was revalued at 289,000 in 2003. We are facing the same dilemma as most cities in North America right now; everyone wants to live in the city, and displacing the poor as a result. |

I'm in a 3 to 3.5 x average salary house.
Favorite tree is Dogwood.
Lately, the temperature has been 20 to 25 celcius.

My house is about 4 x average salary.
Well, it's about 4 x my salary.

What I don't like is, like, when you're buying a house your lender wants to have an up-to-the-minute appraisal. So they select an appraiser who goes to your prospective home, ratified contract in hand, knowing exactly what you've offered/has been accepted, and sucker punches everyone in the best interest of the lender.

Things are ridiculous here, but its just one of those things. My housemate is on 29k and can't afford to buy...
My dad is a builder/developer, with a tendency towards buying old barns/houses etc., and renovating them to living standard. He just sold a house for £1.5m near Winchester, and several more nearing £1m not too far away from that. Now thats ridiculous.

Houses used to be fairly cheap over here compared to Europe. Then mostly British and German rich folk started buying places in Cape Town and surrounds and the prices went crazy. Now the rest of the country is following suit and it is sickening because there are millions of people who cannot afford even a very basic home. Still for Europeans/Americans the houses might seem cheap. I'd say you could buy an Atlantic seaboard mansion for $500 000 in Cape Town.

That's still cheap. $500,000 equates to about £275,000 which doesn't buy you very much these days.

House prices in the UK - Particularly the south, are fucking disgusting.
IN brighton, for a one bedroom flat (apartment) in a shitty bit of town ion the outskirts, you are most likely to be paying around £179 000
thats madness.
I was looking at manchester prices, and oh my god! IM soo moving to manchester. I could afford to live there!!!!

Yeah you could afford to live in Longsight probably. You wouldn't live long though.
No offence but I doubt someone of your age could afford one of the nicer areas(yeah we have them Cheeseman!!!), like Didsbury, Cheadle or Chorlton

well back home in NZ, you could get an damn nice house in a damn nice area for a couple of hundred thousand dollars - well under £100,000
our family farm, which is 220 acres of prime dairy country, with 3 houses on it, is worth about NZ£1,500,000, which is peanuts compared to a fucking family home in parts of England.
