Damn it.
If only my wife didn't have to work, we'd have gone to Saskatoon as well. Ran into Cult of Frank at Regina and he would have been able to get us tix.
Oh well, I suppose 2 shows is pretty good.
How many people were at tonight's show? I'd heard that there was going to be something like 6000. |

Excellent. Three of the songs that I wanted to hear most. Now, if they'd only resurrect boom chick a boom and velvety, inturmental or otherwise... |

The sound was awesome, the crowd was awesome, the band was tight, the setlist rocked... what an amazing show. Best show so far that I've seen (I didn't see Minny). The band was a in top form, Frank was in high spirits, the crowd was insane. At the Winnipeg and Regina shows, they had maybe 3 security people at the front. Tonight they had probably 8-10 guys, and they needed every one of them. They pulled a crowd surfer out every 5 minutes or so. And the crowd was HUGE. Probably in the neighborhood of 4500 people. The croud was extremely energetic and LOUD. They played Hey, I Bleed and River Euphrates (all for the first time), and they were amazing. Dean and I were stunned. He immediatly whipped out the cell phone and messaged Dave. Just an overall terrific, fantastic, super amazing show. I can't say enough good things. I am thoroughly stunned and speechless at having seen these shows, and particularly this one. I can't wait to see what songs they pull out on the rest of the tour.

Spectacular show, close to 5,000 people there, and you can hear the roar on the cd. Wonderful audience, well-behaved, lots of singing, everyone having fun. Sound was awful if you were on the sides of the cavernous venue (more like a warehouse than anything else), but in the centre, it was just fine. Black seemed actually jovial, saying after Bone Machine, "Hi Dave! Hi Kim! Hi Joey!", making goofy antlers with his fingers during Caribou. A very surreal moment when the house lights accidentally went on before the second encore, prompting the sound guy to nearly blow a gasket. My brother in law met Santiago & Lovering after the show (while I was in the DiscLive line), both were very friendly. The cd sounds excellent, despite the echoey setting; the bass is really turned up, but the drums are a little further back in the mix this time.
Just a brilliant night... |

I was right in front of the stage, so I'm no expert, but the sound was fine there even.
Seriously, that was the frickin' best show yet and probably the best show I've been to in my life!!!
It was absolutely amazing!
Everyone was much tighter than previous nights, enough so that I almost wonder if they hung out in their hotel and just practiced on their day off. Kim finally nailed Into The White, and aside from little glitches, they were spot on and really tight.
Not to mention that the crowd was wild and REALLY into it. The energy was tangible. People were lined up hours before the doors even opened (4+ hours before the show) and it was crazy. And the crowd was huge. They sold more tickets at the door that night, and it felt like 4-5000 people there, just a massive gathering of fans. People I talked to from all over the world were just pumped to see them, and you could feel the energy.
So they opened again with Bone Machine, the crowd went wild when each part came in (drums, bass). They were big smiles and flashing guitars. You could tell from the offset that the band seemed to be in a good mood. Right after the song, Frank smilingly greeted the other Pixies' members. "Hi Dave, Hi Kim, Hi Joey!". Then launched right into No 13, which was electric. Cactus drew a surprisingly excited reaction from the crowd. They ate that one up. Though not as much as U-mass, which seemed to be the highpoint for the crowd that night. Probably 10-15 people were taken from the venue for crowd surfing in that 3 minutes. Of course, the highlight of the show was the opening chords to River Euphrates as far as I'm concerned! I almost couldn't believe it.
Then Kim says, "Thanks. We never played in.... Sssssachatoons. <pause/laugh> Ooh-ooh," and Where Is My Mind comes on, a great little rendition. I love the sound Frank gets out of his Takamine. Then Frank switched guitars and there came our man. Everytime I see Joey do the leadwork on this one, it reminds me that this is the guy that came up with that piece of work which is so definitive for that song. He got a huge cheer when he did his little solo the first time.
The Holiday Song was as good as they've played it anywhere else, nothing really to report there. It seems that's always been one of their tighter ones. But then Nimrod's Son, played really slowly and then Frank sang the second verse first! I thought to myself, "Heh, I guess they're not completely tightened up yet". And then, after the first chorus, where there's a pause, Frank came back in full tilt, just lit that song on FIRE. It wasn't too fast, though it was close enough since Joey had a bit of a problem keeping up on some of his leadwork. But man, that song has never rocked like it did just then. The crowd was whipped into a frenzy.
At the end of that song, Kim laughed out loud, and Frank came over laughing as well, and she said, "It's really complicated!" He replied something ending with "forever and ever and ever" and she laughed again as he launched into Vamos. This song is all about Joey. He does some wild stuff on his guitar, and it all sounds great. He was really into it and was mouthing the leadwork he was doing as he was playing it, especially when he had the wah-wah pedal going.
The song ended and there was a LOT of cheering and people chanting "Pixies", and Frank looked at us scornfully and said, "Hey!". Then the crowd screamed really loudly (I think it was at this point I lost most of the hearing in my right ear) and Frank's mock-grimace became a smile and they went into Hey! I thought that he was just saying "Hey" because they've done that at all the other shows they've done so far, so imagine my shock!! Perhaps because they were in the home city of "Hey - A Pixies Tribute"? Well, OK, mot likely, but that's what I'm telling myself!
And then, they went into Caribou, then one song they've done elsewhere on the tour that I've not been able to hear yet and was REALLY hoping to. And thank goodness. Though I do miss the tambourine when I hear it live, Frank compensated with scathing vocals. He was really on tonight, and Kim seemed to be in sync with him pretty consistently. He made little horns on his head with his index fingers when he played this one.
The song is just ringing on that last note, Kim says, "Caribou's slow", and Frank goes into I Bleed and Joey tears into the solo work once again. This was probably the biggest shock of the night, as I kind of thought they SHOULD be playing River Euphrates & Hey, but I never thought they'd dust this one off.
They followed with a few much more anticipated song as far as the crowd was concerned, Velouria & Monkey Gone To Heaven. Which pretty much matched any of the other shows. Gouge Away was next, and they definitely tightened the screws on this one. It was the first time they played it that I didn't lament Eric's absence. Frank moved over to tell Kim something I can't make out on the tape, but then Kim did her little vocal melody there, too. It sounds like he asked if she wanted to take the lead vocals, and she replies about not thinking she'd get it right... THAT would've been indescribable if they had switched parts!
They moved on to the first of two renditions of Wave of Mutilation to be done this evening, the faster one, and right into Debaser. I love watching Dave play drums on this one, he has some amazing fills and beats, especially over the chorus "Debaser" part. Then onto Tame. Anyone in doubt as to whether Frank can scream like he used to, listen to him in Saskatoon!
The crowd loved every second of Kim singing Gigantic, even the "alternate ending" which Kim had to laugh at. Of course, this was followed by Into The White. Kim's lyrics were spot on this time, and I think that I've come to the realization that this song has the best bassline ever. And then they were gone...and the guitar assistant was called offstage while tuning Joey's guitar and came back and unplugged Joey's guitar and we thought "Oh no, it can't be over now!" and then he plugged in the other one.
They were back, and Joey switched guitars to play In Heaven & Wave (UK), which seems to be a staple of their new shows. Then they took off again, and the house lights came up. Still, they were back shortly for Isla De Encanta, which was an amazing song to hear again, Broken Face which seems altogether too short, and Something Against You. With the house lights on, I think that most of the Pixies were kind of amazed at how many people were out there. You could see them look at the vast crowds with an amazed expression on their faces. Levitate Me ended the night, with the crowd chanting "Hey" along with Kim for the ending part of it. They stood up there for quite some time smiling, waving, and finally left Saskatoon. Hopefully not for good, that was a show few will forget.
Seriously, I had and still have, and will have for some time, an ear-to-ear grin, the show was fantastic and is beyond words. It was nice to get to see the band tight and shining especially since I got to see the more down-to-earth "just warming up" Pixies in Winnipeg and Regina already. This was the legendary band come back to stage, this was the living legends playing at their peak, well rested after some drinking the previous night in downtown Saskatoon and no tour bus trips to speak of since Thursday night.
Anyway, if I have any readers left, here's your setlist:
Setlist:

Cult_Of_Frank 's review is so great that it should be kept somewhere on the website, may be in a new section (2004 gig reviews), i don't know. Otherwise it's gonna be lost in the forum ... Thank you so much Cult, for us europeans who have to wait another 1,5 month before experiencing this.

Indeed, it's great for us europeans. I just hope they will play a little more songs from Trompe Le Monde like Letter To Memphis and The Happening. Maybe in Paris. |

Thanks for the positive comments, guys, glad the review wasn't long and boring. Well, okay, there's no contesting it was long, but... :)
Dave (roomloo), I sold three of your four tickets. Email me, and I'll Paypal you the cash or we'll figure something out. Sold them each for $30, so you've got $90 CDN coming your way.

I am so fucking jealous I didn't go to that show. I was praying for them to play Hey, I bleed and river Euphrates in Minneapolis or Winnipeg. I'm finding that for the last two nights all I can think about after 8:00 is that people are about to see a pixies show and I can't be there. Knowing that tickets were avilable at the door is making it even worse. I should have cancelled my flight back and got a ride with someone from Winnipeg since I ended up calling in sick to work on Friday anyway. I could have easily just got a flight back to Toronto today from Saskatoon.

Lydia's was packed, there was a line out the door, down the stairs and onto the street. Also, there was a band playing, and after the noise and glory of the show, we weren't in the mood for anymore loud noise. What a show.... |
