Mine was a Vision "Go skate or go home", i got it for my 12th birthday in 1984, before that i remember taking a piece of 2 x 6 and dismantling my rollerskates to make a skateboard.

After the Vision I had a couple Jeff Hacketts, a Fred Smith (I left that one on the bus, D'oh!), a Billy Ruff, I also had a Per Welinder freestyle.

i believe my first EVER was a no namer my next door neighbor gave me. it wasn't quite old school (super skinny) but it wasn't a fully wide board either. somewhere in-between. with the striped style grip tape (two long strips with exposed wood in between).

my first official skateboard was a Powell Peralta Skull and Crossbones model, white, with red accessories (tail grinder, rails, truck protectors, noseguard yeah baby!!).

then i moved on to Lance Mountain (this exact deck)

which still has a special place in my heart. i skated his decks for a while.. and went on to skate tons of different decks. i probably went through more than 20 skateboards (skateboarding was my life till i was about 16).. Natas, Gator, Neil Blender, all the H-Street decks, Ray Barbie..

i went through a pre-mid-life crisis about 2 years ago and got the urge to skate, so i bought a board. nowadays i just like to skate really fast and scare people (i live by the beach so it's nice to skate down there).. i can't do the things i used to, but i can still hold my own around these young punks.

In early 1977 I got a GT made by GrenTec. It was a neon green fiberglass board with tiny trucks and loose ball bearings in the wheels.

For Xmas 1977, I got a Logan Earth Ski (Bruce Logan model) board with Tracker Half-tracks and Road Rider 4 wheels. Later I was mugged and the board was stolen. I helped the cops to catch the guys and they got me back the trucks and wheels but kept the board as evidence. So I got a Powerflex board for the trucks and wheels. The Powerflex was lighter and stronger than the Logan since it was plywood (the Logan was solid wood). Eventually I got the Logan back. I still have it with the LAPD evidence tag attached to it.

Very cool!

I think i had a lance mountain too, floop, also went through a couple rob roskopp's in the tailguard, nose protector phase, i swear those boards must have weighed 30 pounds, no wonder i could barely ollie on to the sidewalk.

I used to have this skateboard with a tiger painted on it, when I was 8 or 9. But my true passion was BMX! Then I got to surf, from age 15 to 20 (I didn't live very far from the ocean, then). Mainly longboard : it's so easier. When I was 20 I had an accident while surfing Supertubos in Portugal, and I really thought I would die (although the other guys were laughing). Then I moved to Paris, and it ended everything.

floop, do you know how lucky you are to live near the beach...?

I've never lived away from an ocean, nor do I feel inclined to do so.

"Us?" asked Oedipa.

A red Makaha with a blue sticker was the first board I didn't make myself. I think the wheels might have been blue too but can't remember.

that's the best thing i've ever seen. i can't believe they actually got your stuff back. the police actually do get stolen stuff back sometimes.

can you imagine calling the police about a stolen skateboard today?

I just noticed that that happened on my birthday (not the year).. crazy. you and i are connected in some bizarre 4th dimension of skateboards and volvo 122's.

i bet that board is worth something today.

It happened in Hollywood, at Ramona Elementary School (Normandie and Santa Monica). I only lived two blocks away and was there on a Saturday shooting baskets. As I was leaving, a couple of 15-year-olds with baseball bats were waiting and told me to hand over my skateboard. My dad had me file a police report. I went back the next weekend and one of them was there playing basketball! I went home and my old man called the cops. They took me to the school, I pointed the guy out, they hopped the fence and handcuffed the dumbass. It was great!

I think "ramp" means Rampart Division (LAPD). Just like on Adam-12!

ah, i got it.

if you look at the contents section, it looks like they started to write "ski" and then crossed it out.

just when my confidence in the LAPD was restored, once again it's gone downhill..

Every year I would pore through the Sears Wish Book and dream of toys. I'd go over each slot car track and ponder the advantages and disadvantages of each one. And all those cool Spiderman sheets. Those kids in the catalog had the coolest bedrooms.

I used to have either a Consolidated or a World Industries board back in '96 or '97. (I can't recall which.) I never skated much, and one of my friends borrowed it for quite a long time. He ended up breaking it, and, being cheap, bought me a nameless board and kept the same trucks and wheels from the old one.

Take me, break me, tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry
