Hi...thought it would be fun to hear about what y'all think of the Pixies shows after you see them LIVE for the first time in a million years.
The Fine Line show blew me and every single one of the fans I talked to away. My ears are still ringing and my neck is numb...but I wanted to share this with you guys.
Hi... let me know if this thread is redundant....wasn't sure if this should go into the news section.
I am so hyped after that show...it was everything and more.
After talking with several fans after the show we agreed the band sounded as good or if not better than we remembered. They played every song we had hoped and ROCKED the house.
Since I know that if you're like me you want some element of suprise when you hear the show...I won't go through the set list here.
But I was amazed that they played every single tune I had hoped. Others said they were very happy with the line up. It was cool because about every other song, I had to draw myself back to reality that I was actually there live.
The only thing I would change my view from the floor was somewhat obstructed, which is to be expected due to the fact I am some what vertically challenged. From the glimpses I could gather of the band it did appear that they were smiling and relishing the moment as well. The band had good chemestry and commented that they felt like this was their first show too.
This was definately the best show of my life for the following reasons: The Pixies are my favorite band...they are on top of their game and the Fine Line and GREAT sound. The people I talked to were so amazed by the sound!!! Basically, I have an old import CD called "All Over The World," recorded in 1989 in Newcastle, UK; Holland and Chicago. Basically, the sound on this was muddy and since it is the closest I have gotten to hearing the band live...however I was very impressed at the sound. Except for the ambient noise of us screaming fanitics, for the most part it sounded like I was listening to a studio recording...I have never heard this good of sound quality at a concert ever.
The T-shirts were cool...I got one with all the tour dates. It was great meeting so many cool Pixies fans. After listening to them for so many years in isolation...it is great to meet people that share that common passion. It was sad because a handful seemed to have had too much to drink...I bet they will be bumed if they don't remember the show tomorrow. However, it was a very exciting atmosphere with most fans commenting they felt lucky to be there and amazed they were witnessing such a historical concert.
There were alot of fans (me accidently being one of them) singing along...but you could still hear the music great.
You guys who have tickets at other shows are definately in for a treat. If you don't have tickets and you are a fan buy them! You don't want to feel ashamed that if your grandkids ask if you ever saw the Pixies, you don't want to say that you were too lame and missed out.
The opening band Capitol Years was very cool too... the did a great job warming up the crowed and people seemed to get into it despite the fact many had not heard their music before. Personally, just check them out...they have links to songs on their websites.
I am so glad the Pixies show was more awesome than I could have expected!
I was taking to another fan and we agreed that we could die happy knowing we had seen them!!! I feel so lucky and can't wait until I can see them again!!!!!!

Thanks Dave!!! I have to give my respects to 120 minutes on MTV for exposing me to them in 88/89 and especially to my incredible husband who has been so supportive of me and my fandom!!!! |

Honestly I can't remember what they said if they said anything when they came out...but I will have to listen to my cd when my ears stop ringing :)
Basically the T-shrits come in black or white and were only $20. I haven't seen that good of a price in ages.
There were also pullovers, a packet of stickers and some pins, berets and a fuzzy hat.
The pullovers i think were $35 and the pins and stickers were $5.
The t-shirts came in several designs, so let me know if i left any out. Basically there was a white one with a old press photo. There were black "death to the Pixies" t-shirts as well as some with the P Pixies logo. The one I got was black and had the pixies logo on the left side... where the pocket would be. The back had "Pixies Sellout" with a listing of all the dates...very cool.
It was no problem getting a cd...it is very nice. The sleeve is white cardboard and is a 2 disk set. Each cd is numbered as well. Very cool because it is a collectors edition and reminds me how they used to number vinyl. The cd's were $25 and for 2 cds, that's a good deal.

I just have to say that I was disappointed with some of the crowd...half of the people around me were complete douchebags. but then again, the other half were awesome. so whatever, I'm over it.
I did see a few pseudo-celebs...Cities 97's Brian Oake and 3 of the dudes from Phantom Planet.
oh, and about that band, The Pixies, is it? yeah, they were okay I guess...

Yeah...it was kind of a drag how many people kept waking by on beer runs... I know people want to have fun but i can't understand how they would miss a minute of the show.
Also the cool thing was that Fine Line didn't tear the tickets... they are going in a frame!!!!!!! |

you're lucky if the worst thing about your part of the crowd was people going on frequent beer runs. the scene near me...oh man. I was on the verge of punching someone. there were these 2 guys (which eventually turned into about 4 or 5) arguing very loudly in between sets. this went on for about 20 minutes. I don't even remember what they were fighting about, but it included many expletives and violent threats. then there was the pushing which eventually turned into a mosh pit of about 4 people, while everyone else grumbled while being shoved around when they just wanted to be able to watch the freaking show. I try not to let other people ruin my experience, but it's kind of hard when there are elbows hitting you in the face every 5 seconds. I definitely had an awesome time anyway, but I could've done without those minor annoyances.
also...what was that camera crew from? they recorded the entire show, and also the line outside beforehand. hmmm...those guys were cute though, hehe |

I am sorry to hear that. That is not cool. I have been to many punk shows and know how to at least go with the flow in a mosh pit. That saying, I was suprised by the amount of pushing and shoving. I had to yell to the crowd behind me to back up... I have seen people get hurt at other shows at other venues in other states :) I wasn't expecting some of the pushing and people trying to claw their way to the front.
Basically I was not prepared for it to be as pushy and was actually wearing slip ons...i almost lost a shoe a few times.
I know everyone wants to be front row...I did too and I have been a fan since Doolitte. But not everyone can be at least at not at every show. It's cool to have fun but that right to have fun ends when they interfere with other people's listening expereince. It's about fun and not hurting others or distracting them from the music.
I know we are all hardcore fans...but that means we need to respect each other's rights.
There was a woman I was worried about...she had a lot to drink and was not able to stand up straight...I heard her say that she had too much to drink before the show...when there is a pit and someone like that gets in it...it is not good. Luckily she was ok...but I just worry about the fans .
I am just writing about this because hopefully other fan can learn how to be even better fans. Just remember your seeing the Pixies...and that is a great privelage in the first place.
This only represents one or two percent of the fans...but if we can get those fans to be a little more respectful...the show is better for everyone. I do expect this at some shows and the uncool fans were far fewer than many other shows I have been to.
Despite this it was a great show and the people I talked to afterwards liked it!!

Ah, what a tease. If it's just archival, then why get a special crew from NYC? Why not hand the roadies some cameras and let them have at it. I'm assuming they are paying the crew, (although if I was a film crew and it was the Pixies asking, I'd do it for free or for expenses only). They must think they will do something with it later if it turned out good. Oh, I hope!! |

Sounds like you had a great night Daisy Girl! Wish I'd been there but I'll have to wait till Brixton on 2nd June. Got my train ticket booked from Newcastle and it can't come soon enough!
Fingers crossed that someone still comes through with a Minneapolis CD for me. I've got 2 I can trade if anyone's interested : Edmonton on the 18th and Davis April 29th (which is sold out). Let me know!johnchilton69@hotmail.com

What a show! I was completely stunned. Frank Black Francis can still scream like the old days and he was hitting his high notes too. Kim was amazing to watch and hear, and Dave was great too. And Joey has to be the coolest cat on earth. They played almost every song which I wanted to hear, which was excellent. I was standing 6-10 feet away from Joey and Frank and had a spectacular view. I wish I could go see every show of theirs. Great stuff! Definitely worth the drive.
On the flipside, I was standing right next to the guy who was being threatened by the other guy, and I'm glad it didn't get worse than it did. I also have to be honest about my feelings about the crowd... This was their first show in 12 years, and after they walked off of stage for the first time, there was the normal cheering and whatnot, but it didn't get nearly to the level that I thought it would, and nobody even attempted to call them back out by name. (Aside from the few fans that were yelling "To-ny, To-ny", which incidentally is not their name or one of their favorite songs I presume) They eventually came back out, by I seriously felt sorry for them, because they didn't get the frenzied reaction that they deserved. Then after they left again, a few loud fans tried in vain to get a "Pixies" chant started several different times, but people were more interested in talking with friends and buying more drinks than trying to see another encore. I'm not saying that they definitely would've come back out (I heard they weren't huge encore fans, is this true?), but it would've been nice to try. I've seen Radiohead shows where they have 3 encores because the fans are so hyped to see them. The Pixies deserved that kind of reaction after there first show in a millenium, especially after such a wonderful performance. OK, i'm very sorry for complaining so much. It WAS an awesome show. |

That's too bad about the crowd. It sounds pretty much like a regular show crowd. Not the intensely interested, utter absorbed crowd I figured on. Hmm. It'll be interesting to see what Winnipeg's crowd will be like in comparison, especially since so many of you are going to both shows.
I really appreciate everyone here that went to the show not giving away any hints about the set list or other details that might spoil it for those of us that will be seeing them later but don't want to know those things yet. I really wanted to hear everyone's first impressions, but thought I'd have to completely avoid the forum until I see them next Wednesday. You all are great sports in mainly generalizing on this thread! Perhaps there should be two After Show Chat threads: this one that is more general in nature and spoiler-free, and one where people can talk about spoiler specifics of the show, (setlists, "I can't believe Joey/Frank/Kim/David did that when they played _______," etc.). |

I'm sure there's more specific talk in other threads already....I'm too afraid to check them out to see! So it'd just be nice to label the safe and unsafe threads. |

Yeah, the show was fucking awesome last night. It was so weird to hear those songs after so many years of thinking I never would. It took about 5 songs before I accepted the fact that I was there and it was actually happening. On my way to Winnipeg in about an hour, can't wait to experience it all over again! |

Well, talk about self-delusion . . . last night's show fucking blew in a major way. Nothing but a token slaughtering of one song off of each TROMP and BOSS?!? You'd think that the Pixies had warped backed to 1989 or something. [We know that's not true, though, 'cuz I weighed the band before the show, and they must have six members now.] I knew that this "reunion" idea was too good to be true. And, if you guys really think that this show was "fucking awesome," then just listen to the live disc, and you will hear how horrible it was. For those of you that missed it, consider yourselves lucky. |

Yes, the crowd was full of douchebags, hipster types and people who apparently didnt know a damn thing about the pixies, i expected a much better crowd of fanatics. There was dead silence when they played winterlong and yeah its a cover and its on complete bsides but no one seemed to know what the hell it was. The same light reaction to several other songs too. BAH. I'll post my full review later when i've completly relaxed and finish doing some other stuff I need to do today.
In a nutshell, overall it was really good performance wise though they butchered a few songs and joey and kim didn't seem to know most of their parts. David looks like a homeless bum now but god did he pound those drums, he was amazing.

hey everyone...just wanted to let you know i just listened to the entire CD from Minny.
WOW...usually I avoid live recordings becasue the sound is usually pretty crappy. However this sound was Amazing...you can hear all the instruments and vocals clearly.
It was cool because you can hear the talk in between songs. I could't here it live, but when I listened to the cd, I was thinking this is what they were saying.
My only disappointment is that I couldn't distinguish my screams from everyone else....I was hoping to have been immortialized in that way :)
It was not as good as hearing it live, but the quality did sound studio quality. What a great way to relive your concert experience or prentend like you were there. This is something I am going to get a lot of listening out of.
The presentation is soooo nice too...its a sweet treat.
On a completely different note, I was thinking what would be cool is if the band sold posters at the show and sold autographed merch on FB net or Ebay. |

Based on this, I believe that they would've played a second encore if the Minneapolis fans wouldn't have been apathetic. Blown Away, Planet of Sound, Is She Weird, Head On, and Subbacultcha would've balanced out the albums played a little bit better. :( |

Here's my two cents on the whole experience:
In short: The Pixies were awesome. Incredible. They looked like they were having a blast, and kept giving each other these giddy glances like, "Isn't this weird?" (Kim even said as much to the crowd). My favortie moment is when Frank (or Black...or whoever he was that evening) said, "Rock me Joe." and Joe rocked - the crowd screamed, and a genuinely surprised-looking Joe, smiled to the crowd. That and Kim kept giggling.
Being at this Pixies concert was amazing.
Now, that said, BEING at the Fine Line sucked so much it's not even funny.
They over-booked the sh*t out of this show. Plain and simple.
Unwisely deciding to pee before the band went on stage, my wife and I got completely seperated FOR THE ENTIRE SHOW. I tried to get back to her, and met no less than three out and out "Fuck You's" (no exaggeration) and people actually grabbing at me and pulling me around telling me to leave. I wasn't bumping into people or shoving anyone around. I'm not a confrintational guy, I'm a Pixies fan with a wife, and yet I almost got stuck in two fights, JUST FOR TRYING TO WALK AROUND - WHETHER TOWARDS THE STAGE OR AWAY FROM IT. I finally surrendered to an undisturbed one foot wide railing piece against the wall in the back of the top section, where I sort of saw the show (and consider myself a lucky human). My wife, it turns out got crushed right away, and made her way back by the t-shirts where she could see only half the show, until more and more people made their way back and shoved her all the way to the back, and blocked any bit of view she had. She proceeded to sit and listen, if she could hear them over a nearby woman yelling to her friend that "The Pixies broke up because Black Francis wanted to change his name!" and "I'm not even a fan of these guys, I just wanted to say I was here!"
The Pixies ruled. TheFine Line experience was terrible and aggresive.

Between 18 year old Metallica-fan-looking kids trying to start mosh pits by pushing and running into everyone else (who weren't interested in joining him) standing around him, the ridiculous fights that almost broke out, the self-proclaimed "Not Pixies fans", and the detached emotion of a lot the crowd after the first set and encore, I would have to say that I agree with you emphatically. Besides the acquaintances of mine standing around me, I had about 5 people next to me that didn't show ANY emotion during the performance until "Where is my Mind". Great song, but that tells you something about the crowd. |

Yeah, the people there sucked. My brother and I were making our way to the front and got a lot of "Fuck you"'s. My brother pulled out his ticket and showed some whiner that the ticket stated "General Admission" and that he wasn't assigned a seat. Everyone was just standing there. If you don't want anyone in front of you, get the hell to the front. One lady, who wouldn't quit complaining that my brother was in front of her (he is shorter than she was), was abruptly bounced out of the area as soon as the dancing (moshing?) started 'cause she couldn't hang. People suck, the music was great. No shitty review or whiny hangers-on are going to detract from my experience. |

I noticed, too SelfEscape, that my brother and I were the only people in our immediate area that were singing along with Winterlong. |
