Planet of Sound! Dammit, I knew it.
Once again, very Doolittle/Surfer Rosa intensive. |

There were more songs than that in the encore and what not... um Gigantic, Into the White, Where is my Mind, to name a few. I just can't remember the rest right now!
The show was awesome. I never thought Pixies would get back together, nevermind come to Regina!!! Yeah.. it was great. Hopefully someone else can get the setlist ha ha. |

Here's the full set list near as I can figure as I listen to the disc and recall:
Planet of Sound Bone Machine Cactus Levitate Me Debaser Broken Face Tame Velouria UMass Crackity Jones Vamos Holiday Song Where Is My Mind Ed Is Dead Here Comes Your Man Nimrod's Son This Monkey's Gone To Heaven Wave of Mutilation Gouge Away Dead No. 13 Baby ----------------------------------------- Gigantic Into The White ------------------------------------ In Heaven leading into an accoustic-y version of: Wave of Mutilation La La Love You
I forgot Cactus (partly because it was so early and because it's one track with Bone Machine on the disc). There's only 24 tracks on the CD and 26 songs.

There were a lot of cameras up front. There's one dude who is front and centre at every gig I've been too in the last three years and he took some shots I'm sure.
It sounds like Regina was pretty typical of most of the shows. Kim even wondered if they'd played Regina before just like Peg City. Kim seemed really pleased to be there, Frank seemed more relaxed than he did when he played Regina solo last year. Kim seemed lost before Bone Machine (which is captured in all its glory on the disc), but she and Frank were laughing about it. Certainly no tension that I noticed. I think she didn't know what the next song was and she forgot the second verse to Gigantic, but some fans got her back on track. I couldn't hear Lovering at all on La la Love You, you can *barely* hear him on the CD. Other than that they sounded tight, the mix was nice, the vocals were pretty strong throughout and they played a very good set from a performance kind of aspect. The fact that it was the #*$&ing Pixies made it great.
The crowd was diverse and odd. It felt like a weird kind of reunion for people you only half knew from shows in the early to mid 90s.
The hardcore fans up front were what I expected and like Mpls the moshing and crowd surfing wasn't that aggressive or over the top compared to what you'd see a lot of places, but it seemed out of place in a way and there was a small minority of idiots who were pretty annoying front and centre.
I thought the crowd was pretty responsive, either they mixed the crowd low (which is a good thing) on the disc or it seemed a lot louder in person. I had faith in a third encore (no one had left and the Pixies chanting was loud), but they turned the house lights on pretty quickly and eventually people started to give up.
All in all a really good show, nothing too earth shaking compared to other show reports. Hope everyone else along the way has as much fun as I did.
cheers |

About time we get at least something from Trompe. Planet of Sounf was my guess for their first song played at minn. It just seems like it would be a great opener. I hope the 3 disclive sets I ordered all have different setlists. |

Looks like we might have heard all the practiced songs now. Only one new one (Planet of Sound).
Although, like I said, I did see River Euphrates on the soundboard instructions at Winnipeg. Now that the other 2 I saw (Crackity and PoS) have turned up, I bet its only a matter of time. I just hope I'm there to hear it...

Sorry guys, I was standing right by Frank's mic and sent that set list off as soon as it was taped to the stage. They did play quite a few others and miss a couple on there, like Winterlong, but I had to hold my phone very high up to send that message off to Dave, and there was no way I was doing that again mid-show, especially since my battery was almost dead. It's great that they're not sticking strictly to the setlist, though. I think it's more of a fallback in case they don't know which song to do next, and you might even see no setlists by the time they hit Coachella.
They've been adding two-three new ones every night. Ed Is Dead was another first, along with (of course) Planet of Sound and Dead. Unfortunately, Kim's bass was too low for Planet, which took a bit of the oomph out of it.
Great show, though, lots of energy, but that moshing was quite frustrating as we were continually slammed into the barricade from behind. :) Much more energy than the Winnipeg show. They seem to be genuninely having a good time, which is great to see. FB lost the ability to whistle for La La Love You (which was pretty funny, it's like he tried to whistle and looked quizically at the mic because he didn't do it, and tried again then asked Kim to help). During Dave's verse, he stepped back from it and practiced trying to whistle, and then came back and did 'ooh-oohs' instead the next time. Love it!
Also, he blanked on his solo chords for debaser (I think it was Debaser), and he mouthed 'shit' as his part was coming up and then his face was like someone who's about to touch a burner to see if it's hot before every chord as he played it and was about to find out whether it was the right one or not. Of course, he got it right, and made a 'whew' motion with his mouth and wiped his forehead, smiling. On the topic of Debaser, if you see it live, keep an eye on Dave. Amazing performance!
Kim really needs to learn the words to "Into The White", though it's almost better that she doesn't know them, she kind of makes a joke about it everytime. And she forgot how the second verse to Gigantic, so she got the crowd to help her out by singing the first line.
I'm not saying this stuff in a negative way, it's these sorts of things that make the concerts unique, and they're my favourite part. Oh, Frank mentioned something about checking his guitar tuning because "somebody said I was out of tune at the last show" (Minneapolis). Was that someone on here or no? I've been away. He tuned up, said, "Good enough for jazz" and launched into it.
I was really hoping to get to chat with them a bit after, but hopefully in Saskatoon. I did meet Jake from DiscLive finally and get to see their rig and how they do it. Not sure that I can say anything, but it's quite awesome, and Jake is a super nice guy, exceptionally nice. He sprained his ankle in Regina and was busy filling the orders, but still took the time to give FB.Net a tour of their equipment. He asked what's cool to do around Saskatoon/where to see the Sox game, and I believe he'll be popping by the pub to check it out. I can also say that the Winnipeg recording was great. The Regina one was good except they're almost completely missing the kick drum. Well, not completely, but it's REALLY low in the mix.
Since they're introducing different songs at every show, and this Saskatoon one will be my last, I hope that I finally get to hear Caribou, and I'd really like to hear Allison, Motorway to Roswell, All Over The World, and Hey. Please!!!
I hope I get to meet the band or something in Saskatoon, I really would like to give the rest of them a copy of Hey (maybe I'll just give them to Jake). They came here right from Regina which means they're bumming around town somewhere... :)
Anyway, that's my review. Great show, lots of energy, lots of fun, I love the Pixies. To hell with whoever it was that was saying they aren't as good live. They're incredible. It's humbling just seeing these four really talented people working together. Buy the Disclive shows, they're well worth it. And, if you're road tripping, make a good night cap/next day review for the ride home.

There is LONG intro of Dave playing the drums to Bone Machine. They did Planet of Sound first, which is in a different tuning than the rest of the set, so Kim had to switch basses (well, she could have just tuned up, but they're rock stars) so the guy runs out with bass #2, and then they have to unplug one, and plug the other in, and then there was no sound coming from it, and then there was, so you can hear her pluck it a few times to make sure it's on and firing away. Also, her bass was way to quiet in the mix on Planet of Sound, so she got them to turn it up, and then fiddled a bit more, and then turned to Frank (all the while Dave is still pounding away on the drums with nothing else going on) and says "Should I start?". And then she did.
And no, Allison has not been played yet. But they played Dead! And #13! And Planet of Sound! And Ed is Dead! Looks like they might be throwing a few new ones into every set. By the time the get to Coachella, they might be playing ALL of Trompe, who knows. |

Thanks for the review Cult Of Frank. Just curious about the disclive recordings... Do you know how many ambient mics they use ? Where in the house ? How do they do to produce all these CD's ?

there are no (visible) mics at the front of the stage, like many bands use when recording their live shows. that's not to say there aren't any onstage mics, but they're not in the usual place if there are.
i'm going to EQ the Minneapolis show a bit on Sunday, i'll post a sample to compare w/ the original if anyone is interested in maybe getting a copy of the edited version from me. i did Debaser last night and it sounds pretty great on my home stereo. that was just sort of a quick low end boost and i took out a bit of the piercing cymbal hiss. |

I was right up front as well, and basically what those guys said was true almost right infront of frank black cept there was one guy infront of me, and man, he was annoying as hell but he went and vommited a few songs before the show ended, so it was all pretty good fuck, it was so incredible me and some other dude infront of me agreed that it was worth the price of admission just to see their instruments sitting on stage
I forgot Cactus (partly because it was so early and because it's one track with Bone Machine on the disc). There's only 24 tracks on the CD and 26 songs.
hmm, my cd only has 23 tracks... wonder what happened |

Okay let me try this again now that I'm sober. Yeah I only have 23 tracks on my CD. So yr right I also have now actually listened to the whole CD and realized I missed two more songs . . . I actually realized after posting that I hadn't typed Something Against You and then thought for some reason it was left off the CD, but it's actually the third song on Track 8 of the first disc. And I forgot Mr. Grieves. So here's hopefully the final, complete actual set list:
Planet of Sound Bone Machine Cactus Levitate Me Debaser Broken Face Tame Velouria UMass Crackity Jones Something Against You Vamos Holiday Song Where Is My Mind Ed Is Dead Here Comes Your Man Nimrod's Son Mr. Grieves This Monkey's Gone To Heaven Wave of Mutilation Gouge Away Dead No. 13 Baby ----------------------------------------- Gigantic Into The White ------------------------------------ In Heaven leading into an accoustic-y version of: Wave of Mutilation La La Love You
Good review Cult of Frank. I was two people behind you (though not for long I kind of slid over to the side to avoid some people). You didn't get hit by that beer can did you? There were a few really annoying people there. I was glad that 'caribooooooouuuuuuuu' guy shut up once they started playing.
I didn't realize Kim changed basses before the second song. The fact that no sound was coming out of the new bass explains why she looked so confused. I thought she didn't know what they were playing or something, but I couldn't see her very well. |

Nah, the beer can sailed over me and right by my cell phone as I was sending that setlist to Dave (well before the Pixies even strode on stage, it's not like I was blocking anyone's view or anything). You should've introduced yourself if you knew me, though maybe you just figured out it was me because how many people are holding up a cell phone...
Yeah, that Caribou guy... I thought to myself, "They might hear this guy but they'd never figure out what he was 'singing' even if they would play his request." Man he was out of tune. He started up again in the encore. I mostly found him amusing.

Well, a phenomenal show. I really didn't think that it would be better than Winnipeg, but it was. Of course it helped that my wife and I were right up at the front barricade right between Kim and Frank.
My arms are pretty bruised from being pushed up against the barricade, but I'm better off than the guy beside me who was being dry humped by some nutbag in a green shirt.
BTW anyone who can burn me a copy of the show (I bought Winnipeg and I am willing to burn that in return), I would GREATLY appreciate it!
Take care, gkd |

i havent seen anyone mention the crazy version of Nimrod's Son yet.... was it just me or was the last 2/3 of the song done at half the tempo??
also notable was the fact that we got BOTH versions of Wave....
winnipeg and regina had distinctly different feelings to them,
winnipeg was a great show and i enjoyed my perfect view of their every move from the 1st balcony,
but Regina reminded me more of the old school shows id seen in high school back in the day, general admission, even the mosh pit...
speaking of the mosh pit it didnt seem too bad IMHO, after all they are a "punk rock" band, and the pit seemed easily avoidable to me, although i must confess to a lot of pogo action myself, what can i say, the music just takes ya over :)
see everyone in saskatoon!!!

Yeah I didn't realize you were you until you said you e-mailed the set list on your cell. Then I knew who you were. The Caribou guy was actually really friendly. They were Quebecois and he was really drunk, but friendly. I just wished he was going to stop howling in my ears.
The mosh pit was pretty tame I agree, but it was the lack of respect that got to me. I'm not used to people dry humping people that don't want to take part or burrowing their head into the small of someone's back to try to get closer to the stage.
Still a great time. Enjoy Sassytown. |

Oh, I intend to!
I've not been in a mosh pit really, since the front doesn't count all that much, but from what I've seen, I have no desire to be either. That's too bad about those guys, but as long as you had a good time too.
