Jonathan, I cannot live in a universe where you are right re: "Catholics touring again doesn't look likely." Going to shuffle off this mortal coil....

Kathryn

I'd love to be wrong, and I am just guessing. I've been lucky enough to see the Catholics five or six times in the last few years and I must say their shows were more enjoyable than the Pixies ones. Though it's good to see the Pixies the showmanship and musical ability of the Catholics, especially on cover songs, was so much fun. The version of Six-Sixty-Six at their, as it stands, last show, even slower than usual, was one of the best live moments I've ever seen of any band.

All we can do is hope for a Catholics reunion - never imagined the Pixies one would happen so there has to be a good shot the Catholics one will, but I'm not getting my hopes up yet.

Let the 3 boys and the Kim-girl enjoy themselves a little bit with the Pixies... I love the Catholics too, but I can't say that their shows were better than the Pixies ones, I think that there's just no comparison

There is no comparison. I'll just leave it at that and spare everybody another of my "When Will the Catholics Tour Again?" freakout rants. Though I am considering starting a virtual shrine to Dave McCaffrey, unless Ramona beats me to it.

The two have different aesthetics in their lead style, and as a guitar player I can appreciate both. It's a matter of taste...some would say Lyle's maniacally precise yet flamboyant style could be construed as a little cheesy...others might say that Rich Gilbert is a loose-cannon lead player with some sloppiness to his playing and a penchant for the occassional strange note. (I would consider both comments stupid, personally--they are both highly unique and skillful guitarists...Cult of Ray solos get me so very pumped, but so do the Pistolero solos)

but... Rich Gilbert is NOT a "pathetic" guitarist, by any means!!! the man is talented as all hell. what do you find pathetic about his playing, kathryn? pray tell

this hits the nail on the head.
If the FB&theCatholics don't go back out there..
then the world is definitely a gloomy place

definetly, I saw frank and the catholics twice last year and I personally prefer their style of music to the pixies (and i do like the pixies.) Their sometimes off the cuff setlists (with rich on the keyboards one minute, switching to pedal steel and then to guitar - dave p on guitar, then onto pedal steel)

got Devils workshop, show me your tears and Black letter days on my minidisc at the moment and listening to it just makes me want more FB&TC. we'll see.

The Catholics just rock more. I've seen many a Pixies show that rocked, but the Catholics vibe is -- I dunno, it's hard to put into words -- less arty and more hard rocking.

And how great would it be if Charles did a show just for forum members? Though at this point I'd settle for him posting some day soon.

That would be great indeed...
But I fear that we may come off as a bunch of obsessed sycophants if we seriously were to lobby such a show.

but it would be great. He and the guys could play any song whatsoever, and get a genuine accolade for each...no matter how obscure

I don't suggest suggesting it, just wishing for it. Most of my life right now is unfufilled wishes as it is .... and I know a lot of people here know that feeling.

Much as we all love the Pixies, there comes a time when you've just got to let go and move on. FB is a pioneer; so I'm sure that as soon as he's done with milking the 80's nostalgia market, and changing shitty nappies, then The Catholics will return bigger, better, and absolutely loaded for (dancing?) bear.

...where the Ballyhoos and the Tritons are.

I'd happily see both bands. I've seen Charles solo once, which I rather prefer to the two occassions I've seen the Pixies, but that's more down to the venue (tiny club versus theatre and festival) than the band.
